I wanted to install a safe in my console so I could secure a firearm anytime I'm unable to carry inside certain establishments.

I did some research online and found three options: Tuffy, Console Vault, and Lock'er down.

Tuffy was the cheapest in cost but structurally its just a lid with four legs. No sides or bottom so someone could simply cut through the side and have access to anything you're trying to secure.

Console Vault appeared sturdy but installing it would cover up the aux power outlet inside the console.

Lock'er Down was advertised to have all four sides and a bottom. Plus they have a portion cut out so you can still access the aux power. A bonus for me was that they are located in San Antonio so I was able to pick the safe up from their store. IMG_2874.jpgIMG_2875.jpg

Install is easy. Remove the rear divers and front passenger bolt from the factory console, insert the safe, and bolt down with the supplied hardware.
    IMG_2873.jpg

    IMG_2878.jpg
In order to maintain access to my aux power, I drilled a hole in the top of the safe, inserted a rubber grommet, and ran the power cord through.

    IMG_2879.jpg IMG_2880.jpg

Safe works great. I have zero concerns with leaving items (electronics, wife's purse, or firearms) in my truck. The folks at Lock'er Down were amazing. Happily supplied a Military, police, fire discount. Even gave me a tour of their facility to show me some of the other items they are working on for the Tundra. If you're in the market for something to secure your property, give this company a look.

A little of this and a little of that.
Love the aux power mini mod you did to the safe, way cool!

Is that "luggage style" rotary dials?

Yes, they have a few lock options but I'm not a fan of keys. They also have a new "proximity" lock you can get that is activated by running a key fob, bracelet, or card, by the lock.

Agreed! It's one of the best mods you can do.

Now you just need to add one of these to the inside

I thought about that but I never know which firearm I'll have with me. They do have a gun magnet you can install that would be more universal.

I was just thinking about how to run power cable and I don't know why I didn't think of a grommet. Thanks I will do. Lockerdown is awesome I also have the rear under seat safe.

    That looks awesome!

Lockerdown looks great and is the most secure it seems. The thing that has me looking at Tuffy is the design. It allows for the Ocd tray to be used on top of it.. I really like that.

Yep, nice to have choices. I'm needing the secure spot for a gun, binoculars, several GPS's, my iPod, and some spare keys so the vault works best for me. Evaluate your needs and user requirements and go with your instincts.

I did use the dividers, i just cut them down at the proper angles with a mitersaw then sanded the edges smooth...if that helps.

I considered the same option. However, I realized I would have to lift the tray in order to access the safe. I just plan to place an organizer inside the safe. Plus Tuffy doesn't have sides. Not really a safe. More of a lid with a lock IMO.

I thought I'd miss the tray also but I don't. Not at all. I have the OCD organizer that I milled down to match the interior dimensions of the safe and it fits perfectly. If you really think you'll miss the tray you can always sit a small Plano type clear organizer box on top of the OCD. 10/1 you won't though.

Tuffy in my truck. Nobody can tell it has sidewalls or not to know to cut through the side of the console.

If someone has access to your truck long enough for sides to make a difference then the sides won't make a difference.

These are merely to prevent "snatch and grab"

Agreed. It's all about what you're looking for. I wanted something that would protect my firearm. Short of a cutting tool and a lot of time. No one is getting into the Lockerdown.

Was down in San Antonio yesterday, and stopped in at Lock'er Down. Warning: If you go there, the office is 431 Isom Road, #108, not 401 Isom Road, #350, which is the address listed in the embedded map on their website. They are in the process of moving, and it was kind of a PITA for us to have to make two trips. That's the bad news; the good news is that they are now making half vaults for 3rd Gen Tundras!

    http://www.lockerdown.com/i-85-exxt...018-toyota-tundra-ld1043.html?ref=category:79

It's a relatively new product for them, and neither I nor the guy that was having one installed in his '17 Tundra had seen it before. It's not much cheaper than the full size version, which goes for $319, but for me, it is a better fit for what I need.

I didn't actually pick one up, they got a bad batch of screws in recently, and have a new batch coming in. I told the guy I'd order it online and wait a few days; it's free shipping, so the hit isn't on me, anyway.

They do offer a military, police, and fire discount of 10%, use MPF as the code at checkout. For those of us in Texas, that covers the grab the gubmint is going to hit you up for.

Toyota also offers a safe. It offers the best of both, the safe is only half the size and the other half is open to put thing in and it comes with an OCD tray:

I looked at that one last week, and think the Lock'er Down is better built. That one is made for Southeast Toyota by another company, and Southeast had also approached Lock'er Down to make one for them. By the time they had heard all of the requirements by Toyota, (including making it less loud when the lid closed fer chrissakes), LD passed. However, they will be making them in the future for Gulf States Toyota, which is similar to Southeast Toyota, just a little west.

Or... you could just order the unit now through Lock'er Down, that's what I just did.

Yeah, I gotta say, from the pics of the Lock’er Down half safe, I prefer the one I got from Southeast Toyota. Since the SE Toyota safe is metal on all four sides, I bought two refrigerator magnet pockets for each side of the open portion of the SE Toyota safe. In addition to the tray, provides great vertical organization.

The Lock'er Down is metal on all four sides as well. And the bottom. And the top. ;)

I had a console vault in my old ford....it’s the same now as in my tundra....I had a guy break in and he must have had some limited tools....he chewed up the finish and damaged some of my console but he didn’t get in.... they are well worth the money

Got my Lock'r Down half vault today. They are including a gun magnet free as a January promo, and also throw in a magnetic LED that you can put inside for lighting.
