    Old school is great, I just got into a newer method, (although it isn t that new anymore), Toys and joys provides plans for several types of vehicles among other things. What I did was createa 3d model of each part in Autodesk Inventor using the dimensions from the plans, and then created an assembly of the parts ending up with the finished solid model of the vehicle. When I thought every thing was right I then imported each individual part of the assembly into mastercam, and make a toolpath. It mainly required a 1/4" or 1/8" endmill. My milling footprint was 3" x7". I would use wood blanks that size, and would always leave 1/8" of material,(depth), so I could run blocks through drum sander, (upside down), and sand the parts out of the block. It was actually pretty efficient. Then it was a matter of cleaning up the parts, glueing together. I eventually became confident enough to try normal line drawings. My best attempt from a simple drawing was this though I had help from an air brusher for the background;

Since I am relatively new to the CNC world, I had to make a little cheat sheet to help me remember some stuff.

This was a piece of scrap MDF I had laying around with 3 or 4 coats of min-wax pecan polycoat.

If cnc becomes your profession you will not be using that for long. Dimensions, tolorances, math, knowing sizes and conversions is an ongoing thing. Pretty soon it all becomes second nature, and rote routine.

I figured as much, but, right now I sometimes have to stop what I am doing to look things up especially conversions between fractions and decimals and imperial to metric. It really helps to have this around as a quick reference.

Even the best machinist stops everything, and evaluates/re evaluates. Making scrap sucks ass, and will get you fired for those who machine for a living. For you my friend; The machinist bible. Feel free to download. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0ejJoXXijPfSFpKYW82LVB0dFk/view This read is so encompassing that it s almost overwhelming.

It is still on the CNC table with some water on it to raise the grain for last sanding before oil and wax.

    Thanks!
It would be worth it since you're relatively close. My brother Jeff (JMS) that carved that is actually based in Mcleary and my other brother David has a shop in Gig harbor.

    Outsidetheboxwoodworking.com

He (David) mostly does custom finished tables.
This is my table that he made for me from old growth. 118"long 46-42" wide. Three sequential slabs made everything. We love it!

I really wish woodpeckers would stop selling things they don't have in stock. I'm tired of emails saying "will ship 6/11"... followed by "will ship 6/18"... followed by "will ship 6/25."

They make great tools, but have a terrible business model. If you're going to make everything in house, stop adding new products and get caught up on the ones you currently sell.

We're down in SW WA, but are talking of doing a long weekend up in that area at some point this summer.

That table is stunning. I'm much more utilitarian than any of that...but maybe after I retire I can play around with some of that sort of stuff.

How about their sweet (but expensive) "One Time Tools" that you pre-buy 6-9 months in advance. I've got more than a few, and at one point I had lost track of what I had even ordered and almost re-ordered one when they announced a "production update" with an opportunity to still buy it!

I don't have that one. Their combination square set is far and above the best quality I've ever laid hands on.

That they do - part of why so many are frustrated with their business model.

I just want my freaking ruler, but have been bumped back four times already.

First, I'd like to say that there is some beautiful work being done. Truly talented wood workers in this thread!

Here are some drawers that I made for my TRD Pro 4Runner that I had a couple years ago. I don't have any tools, so I rented some shop space (now closed, didn't make it through COVID unfortunately) and knocked this out. I hadn't done any wood working in years, so it was fun to get back behind the saw. I also re-kindled my hatred towards carpeting...what a pain. It's nothing fancy, so don't laugh me off tundras.com!

This chopping block was used in our family restaurant since I can remember. As far as I know every steak that was cooked passed over this board. How old it is I have no idea. I've had it in storage since we closed the restaurant back in '97. Never was able to use it in our previous houses, now I can (I don't have room for the free standing block I have).
    JpRxRmy9BXpofwdb-VDtc9MbpLPbXUXAjwp-FUqc_263282a1aedbfaf45f37649033f0c7ba0ed2d099.jpg

I will not be sanding it. Those chop marks on the sides were put there by many a souls over the years, myself included.
I remember we use to dump it in the hot water sink and just washing it down with soap then standing it up on end and let it air dry. Every once in a while we'd run it through the dish machine, I really don't know why. I'm going to soap and water it, scrub it with a stiff bristle to get the grit out of it. Wash it down with linseed oil. Would you guys have any other suggestions? I do intend on using it for food prep.

I use a LOT of linseed oil but I'm not sure it's the best for food grade stuff. For cutting boards I prefer food grade mineral oil. Here's a link:

Thanks, I've done Linseed oil before on our chopping blocks. We had one that was close to 1200lbs that didn't need much care but a chef who worked there got us in the habit of conditioning them over long weekends. I'm not an expert but I understand that linseed oil dries completely after a couple of days and any residue is not harmful.
I'll check out the mineral oil also. Thanks!

Here is the completed gear holder, a place for a duty belt, a ballistic vest, a shelf on top for sunglasses, wallet, radio, and some hooks on the sides for gloves and keys.

Made this over the weekend for an old pre-vietnam USAF veteran neighbor of mine. His health has taken a turn for the worse and he needed a little cheering up.2088850B-C74F-402B-9FE3-D6166567E342.jpg
I may borrow it back from him and put his name and dates of service on the top line.
