Full disclosure. I didn't install it. The technicians said it was a tight fit but he didn't have any issues. His exact words, "Why wouldn't I want it difficult to install/uninstall, it's suppose to be a theft deterrent".

I didn't install it, but he seemed pretty pleased with the ease of installation.

    3/16" steel powder coated black.

So today, I prepped, primered and partially sprayed both skids and brackets. My plates were pretty rusty already so the prep took a little longer than I thought. It went pretty well though in the end.

First I wiped down all the metal with paper towels, then used degreaser and scuff pad, then paper towel, then acetone and paper towel, finally plain paper towel again. It was pretty damn clean after all that.

I then used some self etching primer very generously. It took 2 full cans, squeezing every bit out of the can. 3 cans would have been ideal for an extra layer. It dried pretty quick so I was able to spray one side of each plate with the rustoleum hammered black before it got dark. I was able to get one full side and the flaps and brackets with 1 can. 2 cans for it all is perfect. Tomorrow I'll do the other side then throw them on the truck.

I also have an eye bolt and threaded rod setup that I prepped so I dont have to squeeze my not so small arms in the bowels of the truck for the cross member bolt up. I'll get some pics of that tomorrow.

So I got the install done today. I can easily say it was one of the most grueling experiences of my life.

The plates were extraordinarily heavy and I didnt have a floor jack. Used a small stool to help. I used the 3/8 screwed security bolts in all 4 spots because I didnt want to bore out the trd plate holes for Tyler's supplied 5/8 bolts. Worked well.

I also found out my u joints dont have zerks, which was one of the greatest moments of my life. Cant imagine taking those plates on and off again to lube joints.

I also took this opportunity to place some weather strip between contact points between car and plate on the trd skid and torqued bolts properly and the creaking during turning and parking went away. Yay!!!

So I assume after reading your post it would make it much easily to go with the aluminum. Does not sound that easy to install these.

The 3/16 steel plates are really heavy... I have a rough time installing then aswell. I use a floor jack to support the back of the plate when bolting it up. And it is a bit of a he man move. Every other plate is pretty easy to me

Sounds like someone needs some gym time lol. I didn't have any issues with mine but I'm used to lifting heavy stuff from all of those years of changing main engine controls on jet engines.

Not sure what the weight difference is. I cant imagine the difference is huge since I thought the aluminum was 1/4 inch, which is what the trd plate is and it's pretty heavy too. I do however prefer the beefiness of the 3/16 steel. A lift and or a floor jack would help alot. In all honesty if I had to do it again I'd pay someone to do it. Tire ramps only was rough.

The weight alone was honestly not the main thing, just the small area under the truck and the awkwardness of the plate size all combined with weight.

Those Screwd bolts are bad ass. I got my 4 inch bolts in the mail today. So for my DE skid, I have a total of 8 bolts holding it on in which 4 of them are Screwd 2 inch, 2 are carriage bolts from the RCI, and 2 are from the Vahalla rear plate. Those 2 will be replaced with the Screwd 4 inch.

Yes. They pass through the crossmember and have nuts on the top. I'm making it hard as hell for them to get my cats as well as preventing the plates from getting stolen if someone ever took the time to try.

I haven’t been nice to my body, I lift these damn plates everyday, you would think I would look like the rock, but I am still a dough boy.

another hint for an easier install, I use a little 4 wheel furniture dolly to roll the plates under the truck
