Motor Trend's take on the 2022 Tundra

Couple days old so folks may have seen it already but its a decent read. Makes some predictions on the V8 demise.

I don't bother with motortrend reviews but I bet it's another speculation article.

 

Direct injection with the fancy wide angle vvti like the newer 3.5s have would make the engine pretty damn good if paired with a good trans

 

Or, that same technology in a V8.

Personally. I hate the 3.5 in the taco. Great car engine though. But not enough bottom end torque to make me happy in a truck.

Yeah I think the 3.5 Taco motor is too small for the Tundra. Hell the 4.6 has more horsepower than that.

 

And I wouldn't be surprised if the 4.6 value goes up as well.

 

The 2.4 and 2.5 are super smooth and do work great in the Camry. The V6 in that car takes it up a level though, especially with an exhaust.

 

Those little motors are great for vehicles that weigh around 3500 pounds, but these trucks exceed 6000 pounds and are meant to tow & haul heavy loads. With forced induction a smaller Toyota motor will not last long under the stress of a Tundra being used like a truck. Long live the V8.

 

I would be disappointed to see the V8 go away unless the vastly improve the new V6 designs. I had two Tacoma’s with the 3.5 and new 6 speed and they are terrible to drive. One manual, one auto, neither worked for me.

I will say that almost all of my driving is above 8k elevation, so that could be the issue. Perhaps they are ok at sea level, but I doubt it. A turbo could help, but you would have to wind them up so much to get any torque it would not be very pleasant to drive in my opinion.

 

My personal vote goes for a v12 option. But I think I stand a better chance seeing a twin turbo v8 before an n/a v12 beauty.
