You will get another USB port in the back.

I am not a tech in the truck guy myself.
Odd because I am an I.T. director and a known geek.

I dont use a lot of the crap my truck comes with and doubt I would if they added a bunch of useless shit.

Better gas mileage would be a plus but I am not going to buy something newer to save myself 20.00 a week in gas.

I do understand the want for more tech but at the age of 52 I can find other things I would want.

Looks like you're correct. It'd been a while since I'd looked into battery advances.
One of the top articles on solid state batteries is about Toyota. It mentioned Toyota has developed a solid state battery and plans to release in the early 2020's.
Now, I know it will be some compact little ev car that it debuts in, but imagine the 2022 coming with a plug in hybrid option running on their new solid state battery tech. 100 mile plus range on battery with the ttv6 to back it up. It would back up their world beater claims. But it's not gonna happen

I'd be happy with a base 2021 heck even with rubber floors. I do wish the payload was higher but I can live with it. I just want the 2022 info out and I hope they nail it, then maybe the 2021s prices will gets some discounts. Been a long time since I remember being this interested in a new model release I check this site way to often.

Yeah it’s a little strange that haven’t released anything yet. Usually they show the new upcoming models at the Chicago auto show. Which obviously couldn’t happen. But why still nothing on a truck supposedly starting production soon and coming out in a about 6 months is a head scratcher.

Maybe they’re going to build 50k 2021’s just before they shut down production to retool for the 2022’s and release the info just before they reach the dealer show rooms . Then if some people don’t like the new model they can sell you the 2021 and if people like the new one they can buy it as they hit the dealers .

    A bunch
The issue comes in where the markets are going - half tons are now commuter vehicles, HD's are the workhorses. The best way to describe this is the 14 year old Tundra tows much better than the new F150 even if it's ratings are lower. The big 3 can make this compromise because they have HD trucks. They can sacrifice towing and hauling confidence to get a softer ride and better unloaded fuel mileage in their half tons. Want something to tow or haul stuff with a bunch, buy an HD, want a grocery getter that can tow a boat, get a half ton. Toyota doesn't have this luxury at the moment, and unless the hybrid can overcome the deficiencies of turbo gas engines towing they're going to get pushed out of the working truck market and have to focus on making the Tundra good unloaded.

I wonder if they will add back the drivers side grab handle. The competitors all have it.

Toyota better not do away with the entire window rolling down in the back.

better leave that one alone Toyota!!

Really? I guess I’ve never missed it, and never noticed if there was on my 2010 or 2001 previous Tundras, or my 1998 and 2001 Tacomas.

Or my current 2018 and every other truck, I just use grab the steering wheel when I get in. Or are you using wanting them as an “oh shit” handle when off camber crawling?

I totally get having one on the passenger side, but drivers side seems redundant to me.

And I 100% agree that losing the full roll down rear window would be a HUGE mistake. I love that feature, and can’t believe the Big 3 haven’t copied it.

Unfortunately, I've found a lot of people can't just take a joke in online forums - but it is what it is.

I feel the same way you do, Toyota's reliability is what keeps me coming back - but every time I am in the market for a new vehicle, I have a real internal struggle looking at how other manufacturers put a lot of attention into the little details, and how they really make things feel like they are premium. It seems like Toyota is 90% focused on reliability, with 10% focus on aesthetics - while other companies are almost the exact opposite. I'd really like to see Toyota make the vehicles feel more premium - at least the higher end trims - cause in all honesty, there is very little difference between the base model interiors, and higher end trims. As for the engines, I'd have to experience them for myself - but if a Twin Turbo V6 can be as powerful as the 5.7 V8, and give me better fuel efficiency - then I'm for it. I'll have to see it when it comes out though and experience it for myself. The thing I find frustrating are people that say "This is what I like, and I'm not even interested in entertaining any other options." - that's the kind of thought process the stifles progress. There is always room for improvement, and while I completely understand liking, and being comfortable with what you're used to, if you don't give progress a chance, you're missing out on some things that could really benefit you.

I've read some people say they have trouble unlocking the steering wheel after using it to pull themselves up into the cab.

That's what I had heard as well, but I haven't actually heard of anyone having any real world issues. That said, it really hasn't been that long since they got rid of the handle - so maybe those issues will start to appear later.

Not sure when they got rid of it, it's in my 2011. and was in my 2000, but wasn't in the 2020's I test drove last year. I never realized I used it getting in/out, till it was missing! ;)

As an IT guy (server admin) I'm exactly the same - and I've realized it's not odd at all.

    1. We fix crap all the time.
    2. We fix OTHERS' crap all the time. :D
    3. If stuff DOES break on our truck, we're going to want to fix it; so we'd just rather not have extra tech that's not needed.

At least that's the way I see it. *shrug*

    Two side notes:

    1. Many of us like what we have because our general lookout is somewhat the same as yours but with added reliability - e.g., "If a TTV6 can be as powerful as the 5.7 V8 and give me better fuel efficiency - AND not threaten the vaunted Toyota reliability - I'm all for it." I'd LOVE to have more power....but not at the cost of reliability, and besides, while my mind knows the competition can tow 'more', being able to tow more and being able to tow more stable are two different things.

    2. Often it's not that we're not willing to entertain any other options. It's that we're not willing to entertain any other options any *longer.* This isn't the first Toyota I've owned, but it's the first Toyota truck I've owned. This makes the 3rd Toyota we've owned, with at least 8 to 10 others. While every single one of our vehicles has had issues, here's the total list of issues between all 3 of our Toyotas:

    a) HVAC issue (occasionally defaults to defrost vents) (servo issue - replacing under warranty on 11 March 2021).

So yeah....I'm totally willing to no longer entertain other options, until their reliability is proven.

    A bunch
And it only gonna get bigger in the short term. The people who bought truck 15, 20 years ago are being pushed out of half tons because they've changed so much and into HD's. And now half tons are pretty much becoming soccer mom vehicles, the 'cooler' trucks are the HD's. As much as people say Toyota shouldn't get into the HD market, if the made a heavy Tundra (gets into class 2b range) and has 3000+ lb payload, even if it's only a couple stripped down trims, they'd definitely sell a bunch. Do some fleet promotions for a few years and companies would be drawn in like crazy once they see the cost of running them.

Brand new here. Although I've been following this thread for quite a while now and I thought I would go ahead and create an account. It would be silly to think I could add any significant substance to what has already been said since we're 100 pages deep, but I did want to throw a thought out there. Perhaps this has already been said, but I think it's interesting if nothing else.

I think Toyota's relatively new partnership with Mazda is interesting. Perhaps not relevant to the next-gen Tundra, but of all the automakers Mazda is the one really doubling down and not giving up on the ICE. How impressive would it be if Toyota leveraged some kind of cutting edge combustion tech like skyactiv to achieve similar or better performance we're seeing from the big three. Instead of cutting mass to boost performance numbers, you make up that delta with some futuristic ICE tech. Toyota surely has the R&D capabilities and budget to make it happen. The "make the truck as light as possible" strategy has gotten to the point of diminishing returns, and I imagine Toyota realizes this.
