New Owner 2005 SR5, Some Quirks

New owner of a 2005 Tundra SR5 double cab. Runs great but has some quirks.

1st Quirk. When coming to a stop sign as soon as I release the brake there is a light clunk and a little bit of jump before I can even press the accelerator, tends to happen more often in residential areas where I only get up to 20-30mph and happens less often when coming to lights where I was just doing 45mph+.

2nd Quirk. Exhaust Heat shield right under driver side rattles like crazy when hot, I know it is it because if I hold onto the hangar it stops rattling. Bolts are a little rusty but they're all there so not sure why it's rattling?

3rd issue is exchanging the stereo, I have the JBL premium audio system and am looking

at this wiring harness. Is this correct? With that harness can I swap all the door speakers out or will I have to run new wires for all speakers?

First quirk I would check the carrier bearing and see if there is excessive play in it. Could be you just need to change the tranny fluid. Hopefuly something simple

 

Rear half of driveshaft may need to be cleaned/lubed.

Also check rear leaf packs.

 

Common problem that’s really a non issue on these trucks. You brake, rear end preloads, ie rotates, slip yoke extends, you let off the brakes just enough so that the springs unload and then the slip yoke jams back in real quick.

Really the only solution, if 4wd, is to pump the yoke full of grease. The 2wd yokes don’t have a grease zerk so you just learn to live with it.

Oh and for sure, don’t flush the tranny as stated. If anything only do a drain and fill.

1) Grease all drive shaft zerks. Do a search here. You also may have loose/missing transmission mount bolts if yours is 2wd.

2) Buy some 3” Stainless Hose clamps from Big Box and remove the old and reclamp with new. Your shields are rattling probably and this is a fix.


3) Nice engine feather dusting!

You'll need to remove the amplifier mounted forward of the radio, you'll see where the radio harness runs to the amplifier once you remove the head.

I also thought this but this adapter does not work the adapter has 20 pin outs on the radio here is a photo of the plugs in the dash. It is also 2 WD so no zerks, carrier bearing has play in it but not sure how much is to much? I can move it up and down maybe a 1/4 inch.

 

It can move a little. Depends on the Rubber Condition. If its never been changed before its probably time. Spicer makes one. There is a thread here somewhere where you source it straight from Spicer for $60ish vs the $180 I spent before learning.

 

Ohhh. If 2wd there are 4 bolts for the transmission mount that like to come loose &/or disappear. They are a known cause of this clunk/shudder. If they are there I recommend using some blue loctite on them.

1/4" play should be ok. It's if it's super loose and knocks around that you'd replace it.

 

You may need the amp bypass harness Metra 70-8117. On my 06 DC Limited the amp is located behind the rear drivers seat back bolted to the back wall of the cab.

Yup I found the amp and have ordered the

Metra 70-8117 adapter plus Metra 82-8153 Speaker Mounting Brackets to install some Rockford Fosgate 6.5's and am undecided if I wanna go the storage under the seats 8 inch subs or just get a under the seat sub still deciding.

 

I have a Kenwood KSC-SW11 under the rear passenger seat. It won't rattle the widows but has enough bass that's good enough for me.

 

I was looking at that model and a few others because I would have to fabricate a box to fit into the jack storage compartment and not really wanting to put in the labor haha. But I would like the extra boom from 2 8's so Im still thinking over it.
