Ugh...I should probably get new tires.

Today I was 22 miles up a forest road in the middle of nowhere, Oregon. I was well out of cell service when a relatively small and normal rock for forest roads here, punctured my tire twice. I managed to change the tire out with the spare on a very muddy logging road, in the pouring down rain. I was able to get the tire repaired, but the guy at Les Schwab was surprised that a TRD Pro had such a thin tire. Being as I frequent these types of roads, this is unacceptable to me, so I'm going to upgrade my tires. What tires should I get? I'm not really interested in upgrading the size. The last time I did that I took a substantial hit on my MPG on my 15 SR5. I just need a durable tire that performs well on the highway 99 percent of the time, and won't get punctured by an average rock on Oregon forest roads.

 

I have general atx and I love them. I offroad them here in utah mountain trails and they do great. Running load range d. Good highway tire too quiet and smooth. Also had real good luck with Falken at3w but load range e only. I would not recommend Falken load range c

 

I had 285/55/20 BFG KO tires on my 2014 stock.
I then bought 275/60/20 BFG KO2s are couple years ago.

I'll will say this about them both (knock on wood) I've never had a flat tire with either one of them..
The KO2s did well in the Texas snow this week.
But considering a Cooper AT3 XLT for my next tire...

I loved Michelins on my 2005 DC.
But it is hard to believe that Toyota puts them stock on a TRD Pro...

 

Cooper AT3 XLT of course. Looks good, performs well and above all it's quiet as a mouse! (Well, sounds like a freeway tire, so the engine and wind will dominate your driving experience rather than some "WWWwwwahWWWWha......" noise from the wheels)

 

There are a lot of great tires out there. I prefer tires with 3 ply sidewalls which add a bit more weight but worth the trade off if you get out and about a lot especially in rocky situations.

Toyo A/T3’s, or Cooper XLT’s sound like what you need. My father uses the Toyo’s on his Denali and his use mirrors yours. Does great in the sloppy forest trails and is civilized on the road.

 

If you want better sidewall protection, go with something that has tougher sidewalls. Usually this involves going to a higher load range than SL.

E load 275/65R18 (stock size) tires:

Michelin Defenders — 52 lbs.
Nitto G2s — 53 lbs.
Cooper AT3s — 53 lbs.
Goodyear Duratracs — 53 lbs.

Goodyear also makes a C load Duratrac in stock tire size that weighs 50lbs. People seem to love em or hate em. I love mine.

 

Road tire 99% of the time. Michelin Defenders....so quiet compared to others when doing 80-85 on the road.
