Is anyone running an active audio system?

I need to replace front door speakers cause one got fried from rain water, so I m seriously considering doing an active setup. My thought is to use a 4ch amp to run 4 channels in front, (2 mids, and 2 tweeters). I assume gain setting on a 4 ch amp applies to all 4 channels, so Im just not certain the gain for mids will be appropriate for the tweeters. I will be using a sound processor, so I can properly adjust frequencies for tweeters. My only concern is the power of the 4 ch amp hitting the tweeters. It seems like tweeters should be ran off a seperate 2 ch amp of lesser power. I d appreciate any advise in this matter.

 

Your amp should have separate gain control for front and rear channels. If it does not, it’s probably not worth using it for anything sound quality related.

 

Maybe my intent isnt obvious to you, but a rear channel is not even part of my scenerio. Do you know what an active system is?

It means exactly WTF it asks,what do you mean exactly by "Active"?

What I am thinking you mean is that a DSP in one of the system components actively manages the Amp channel levels and steering by listening to the interior with a Microphone inside the cab and making adjustments actively on the fly to the speaker output to compensate for noise inside the truck..

The only other thing that "Active" can really mean is that the speakers are powered by amplifiers which every speaker anywhere has to be in any system where you can actually hear sound from the speakers.

An active crossover vs a passive crossover system,not the way we might talk about this in the pro audio world that I am in.

You would also need to have dedicated speaker components for each crossover band to make it worthwhile usually so dedicated Low,Mid and High frequency speakers to be crossed over to.

Of course people use systems like this and the crossover should have level controls for each output and likewise so should any amp worth the money.

• Frequency Response : 5000-25000 Hz
• RMS Power Range : 80 Watts
• Peak Power Handling : 160 Watts

You can run a 4 channel without connecting to the rear input on the amp?

You are going to use front and rear channels on the amp, they should have separate gain for each.

I tried running active back in the days of trying to make the stock Entune HU work with an Audiocontrol LC6i LCI using a PDX V9 amp.
Ran my Focal PS 165FX bi-amped through the Focal crossover on 4 channels.
Even tried bypassing the Focal passive crossover and ran the components straight from the amp using the amp crossovers.
Really didn't sound any better than running them off 1/2 channels with the Focal passive crossover.
I never used a DSP on that setup.

Only DSP I ever tried was a JBL MS-8 and it was an epic fail.
After that I only bought aftermarket HUs.
Every HU I've bought has the option of 2 way or 3 way speaker setup on the initial settings.
I don't know much about DSPs, I wouldn't have time or patience to tune one..

As others stated, it seems it would be better to have a 4 channel amp with separate 1/2 and 3/4 channel gains to go active.
My Alpine PDX V9 1/2 channel high pass crossover is X10 settable to use with a high frequencies but I guess your DSP will handle that.
It would be nice to have separate gains to give you more control of your tuning between mids and highs, unless your DSP will do that.

I got hammered yesterday. I only rememeber making the initial comment. I meant no dis respect, and I m sorry if I offended anyone.

 

Things tend to get heated every now and then but the members on this forum are great about getting back to normal quicker than most. This last weekend was a bit tough on all of us in the PNW as well as some areas in the south.

 

I'm running 3 way active in the front, 2 way passive in the rear and 2 subs. Powered by 2 5ch amps.
It sounds amazing.

Just put your tweeters on the front channel and the midbass on the rear channel

 

For your sceneario you would get a 4ch or 6ch amp. Two channels for the front drivers, two channels for the front tweeters, and if you choose a 6ch amp, two for the rear. The 6ch would be the way to go IMO unless you're not even going to run rear door speakers. You can split the RCAs to double them up for the inputs. Each set of channels should have it's own gain setting. Should be pretty simple but you'll have to run new power/ground wire for the amp and get some wire harness adapters to hook into the stock speaker wire if you're not running new wires.
