I’ll throw this out there. If you have 4wd and decent tires you don’t need chains. I drive in a lot of snow for 6-7 months a year and have never felt I needed chains

I never needed chains with a 4WD up in Lake Tahoe. Then I moved to the Portland Metro area of Oregon. The snow here is wet and packs into your tread. Also, when we have snow, there is always a ton of ice to go along with it.

If you're concerned about access to ski resorts don't be. A 4x4 tundra won't have a problem getting up a plowed and grated road to a ski resort. I've never used them in AZ, CO, or CA

All these posts saying that chains aren't needed in a 4x4.... Are you guys taking into account that it may not have tires designed for snow? If it's a pavement princess then it likely has tires that are meant to look good, and if they don't have the tread pattern and siping for slick conditions, then chains or cables are a viable means of increasing traction.

I know. It was in response to my post about sidewalls.

Don’t know what kind of tires he has. I made the comment because until you put tire chains on , in the cold you don’t realize what a hassle it is. I’d avoid having to do that regularly at all costs

Oh, I am with you there. Chains are a pain in the ass. Strictly an emergency tool in my book. I've had to chain up lots for work, and it sucks. Every. Single. Time.

I don't think I'd run v bars unless I was going off road in some serious snow/mud. They're really aggressive and don't like pavement/concrete in my experience. As long as you keep them tight and check them often you would probably be fine, but I just don't see the need on pavement.

Z coils are the bomb. They don't get tangled like regular chains way smoother on pavement and are easier to put on . I have 4wd now so I don't use them but when I had my f150 2wd the were perfect

Awesome that you got them, but you actually have them on inside out. The two hooks that curl on the outside of the chain need to face away from your tire or they will damage your sidewall.

Yup. The ones I circled here need to be facing out so nothing but smooth chain is on the rubber.

Here's what you want the ends to look like. The chain ends face out to protect your sidewall and give more grip if in ruts or deep snow.

    20210206_024308.jpg

You'll also want tightened on ther to keep the chains from getting too loose as you drive. A loose chain will cause LOTS of damage. Bungie cords can be used even, but make sure that the hook ends face away from the rubber. After you've got the chains and tensioners set drive a little ways at slower speeds (you don't want to go fast with chains anyway) and check/re-tighten the tensioners as needed.
