This hurts! Wiped down and tightened some things. See if it makes a difference. Thanks

I'm in the process of installing a 2017-2019 Toyota 86 radio. (Inspired by @empty_lord, also thanks for the help.)

I have an '05 access cab, it had a 6-disc/cassette non-jbl radio. Unfortunately '05 & '06 models put the external original amp below the passenger rear seat.

The 86 radio doesn't have low level (RCA) outputs to feed the original amp. The built in amp is more powerful and better sounding than the original, no reason not to ditch it IMO.

    IMG_20210125_173125.jpg

I'm still waiting on a few things to complete the setup. Currently does Bluetooth audio only (no mic installed). Antenna and USB adapters are on order.

Still have to install a backup camera and make the adapter harness for it, but it's been raining the last couple days. Not trying to lay on wet ground to do so.

    looks good so far.

the stock large pin connectors on the 86 should have a pin for amp turn on. Typically a white wire on the diy harness ends. This could be used to start the amp.

(I just notice you said ditch the stock amp)

The highlanders with the older unit before this one used a seperate amp. I’ve been curious how much more power that amp had

Also.. looking at you’re harness. Soo much cleaner than mine... I prototyped too many times.. need to find another factory radio harness plug to redo and cleanup mine.

Yeah. Definitely ditch the Tundra one. Way better without it. I didn't feel the need to buy speakers but now it's not even a question.

Even the under seat subwoofer is working better with the cleaner output (it takes speaker/high level input).

I don't know about the Highlander amp. Does it have a larger fuse showing that it may provide a larger output?

I looked into after I stated that. Power output doesn’t seem to be better. So ignore that part. what under seat sub did you use? I wired up a connector to add an sub and use the rear high levels as inputs since this truck doesn’t have rear speakers.

I need to figure out if these radio can fit my Avalon too... getting tired of no Bluetooth in it. But it has a stupid screen that needs a radio that talks to it otherwise I get no a/c controls..

Shop called in the middle of a lot of stuff going on, but i know he said my coolant leak isn't the head gasket

I think he said it was the intake manifold gasket. Less deeper is more cheaper!
Going to do some bits that are along the way. I'm a fan of "while you're touching it anyway".

He asked me when the T.B. was done & I just don't know. P.O. seemed the sort to stay on schedule, but i don't know he did.
So the mechanic is going to take a peek & see how it looks. At 213 I'm probably okay. But coworker just cooked his engine w/ a broken belt so....

(Camper conversion underway.) Rebuilt engine w/265K miles, A.R.E. camper shell (w/cab pass-through, rooftop fan, and side windows delete), bedlinered steel ladder rack (w/wooden rooftop deck and hammock mount), all LED lights (red dash, 4" side floods, 32" rear bar), Android head unit, 1.5" lift from Bilstein 5100 struts, 32" DuraTrac tires on factory rims, 1.5" wheel spacers, Moog suspension parts, SuperSprings leaf kit, diff drop, Reese trailer brake control, GoRhino Hitch Step, debadged, F-150 rear bumper, Sequoia center console unit upgrade, partial rear bench seat delete, dashcam, aftermarket speakers, 50% sound deadening coverage, custom tools unit.
Restored a bunch of my engine parts like my throttle body, intake, bypass pipes, and fuel rails (shown in process) since they are off anyway.

For plastic bits (pics to come) I cleaned them and wiped on some Aerospace 303. For metal I used that 3-in-1 oil + toothbrush combo that @Professional Hand Model recommends and while I didn't get the same results, I was impressed. The oil helps loosen dirt that's engrained in the metal, while also being absorbed as a protectant.

I went ahead and ordered a new fuel pressure regulator, they are supposed to last the life of the vehicle, but I aim to eliminate all negative factors for fuel economy/performance.

My new Aisin fan bracket came today as well as the steering coupler bushing piece; while I'll compare them side-by-side, the new one already feels firmer than the 260K mile one.

So far the head gasket job is going slowly, I got the cam shaft service bolts in and removed/organized the bearings, but the cam gear bolt won't budge! I have a camshaft pulley holder on the way which will hopefully help.

I need to lift the old engine on to my engine stand and get it in the garage. I think the bolts are M12 x 1.25. Since the plan wasn't originally to repair it I'd merely strapped the block to a pallet and tied a tarp over it, which is not fun to work on in the Colorado cold and snow.

It's a Subaru one. It was an option and available separately from Subaru for their cars. Occasionally you can find them in the junkyard.

    Sub info here:
I think I read some Avalons required tucking the OEM radio into the dash or glovebox to keep the HVAC working. Which is stupid but may have been necessary.

well if i can find someone capable of doing the custom work to the bezel, it looks like the 86 radio has the TX and TX - wires in the 24 pin to make my screen work. i have to do some testing first though.. would be really awesome to have a modern radio in that car.. its literally my only gripe about it.

the sub looks decent.. probably enough for a regular cab. i was looking at the new JBL basspro for under the seat.. has the high level inputs.

Gah, I need to do the Toyota 86 radio now. The 2019 version is best right @empty_lord ?
    Can I still use
my powered underwear sub (RCAs) ?
    Xm radio?
    Steering wheel controls?

Wheel controls work, you will need to get some high level to low level adapters for the RCA connections. The 19 does not have XM I believe.. but don’t quote me on that.

The 2020 radio is the real gem with Apple car play... but so far no luck locating one

Went out to the truck and pulled the video from the cam.

The ditch doesn't look as steep, and the hydroplane doesn't appear that much on the clip, but I felt it. It was there. Rushing water in the ditch doesn't show up too much either...

    @Tundra2

That was the weirdest hydroplane I’ve ever seen. I could see pavement and no high water in front of you. Those earlier puddles looked gnarly and you blasted through with no problem.

Maybe it's just the video but it really seemed like you were hauling ass for the conditions. Easy on that skinny pedal grasshoppa!! Had that ditch been much sharper you could have easily flipped. That was nice of that guy to stop and pull you out too.

Instead of buying a new or remaned starter, I'm simply going to rebuild mine... It worked fine before and I've heard of them lasting a very long time. I will replace the solenoids and plunger which is what everyone does, but also take apart the motor, check for wear on the bearings and other parts, repack grease, etc. I'm really excited about this.

I'm enjoying following along. You should consider documenting everything in your own thread that way others can find it in the future. We haven't had any members do a head gasket on the V8 yet, only the V6.

Didn't actually see any hydroplaning? Looks like the truck just drifted off the road and into the ditch like when someone falls asleep at the wheel. Couldn't even see any standing water, or hear any water rushing into the fender wells. Very strange indeed. Glad you are OK sir. You could see the way that the guy is walking along the ditch how steep it was. Would be tough to exit in 2WD while it was that wet and soft, but I damn sure would have gave it hell trying!! This is why I insisted on a 4WD truck. Even in the snow when people say that 4WD won't keep you out of the ditch. It'll get me out of the ditch though! Guy that pulled you out didn't even look like he slipped a tire. Love seeing all of your adventures recorded on your dash cam. Very entertaining, keep em coming! Well, don't drive in to a ditch just for our entertainment, but you know what I mean.

One thing I noticed is that had he just stayed on the gas and kept momentum he likely could have kept going and made it back on the road but hindsight is 20/20 and I'm sure I would have done the same thing he did. This was probably the best possible outcome in that he didn't flip and didn't smash that telephone pole.

@des2mtn Disc brake conversion looks cool. I'm interested to hear how the function is. The rear of the truck is so light the drums are plenty when driving around unloaded. If you're doing a lot of towing or always have weight over the bed, I could see some benefits here. Getting them dialed in will be interesting. Hopefully the LSVP will work well for this.

I am really looking forward to no longer dealing with the drum brake squeak in reverse. From what I've read, you need to change out the master cylinder and property adjust it to get the most out of this upgrade. I did the relocation bracket for the prop valve when I put on my rear shocks, we'll see how that works - some guys run a manual adjustment in the cab when doing this upgrade. My truck always has weight in it plus the cap. I hope to see some improvement when going down dirt grades.

I saw some setup where the dog has a harness and there's a short leash attached to the car seat anchor. I can see that ending up in a tangle with two dogs close together, but could be a safe option. My pup has her seat, but I don't tie her in or anything.

In addition to Paddlesports I actually buy Dog product as well. In my stores I carry the Load Up harness by Ruffwear.

I think its a great option for some however I am a fan of a well secured Kennel for my dogs.
