It’s quite a neat little package that’s totally convenient. But where’s the fun in not building your own? Lol
Maybe if I had money to throw around...

One of my favorite things to do in traffic is tally up how much money is spent on those Tacos. My wife couldn't believe it when I pointed out one with well over $10k in camping stuff on the bed.

My buddy is working for his friend making these camper/RTT combos, primarily for Tacos. He keeps sending me pics from installs and it is absolutely crazy the amount of money people are sinking into these rigs that 99.9% of are ultimately just mall crawlers.

With that said, as expensive as these systems hes making are, the craftsmanship at least matches the price tag.

My favorite is seeing them with an RTT parked at a hotel. Saw two of them at a hotel in Santa Barbara last Summer and another at a hotel in San Francisco. Defeats the purpose.

People who really use them, thats cool though.

So I have gone to 3 weddings at Hotels where my friends all payed to stay in rooms and I just slept in my truck in the parking lot in my camper. So maybe thats whats going on there too? But yea, it is a funny site to see a camper like that in a hotel parking lot, haha.

Hahaha yeah, people throw around percentages so carelessly. Where I grew up I drove off road every week but could never say anything close to 20%. 2% even seems high to me.

    Today I:
    • washed all the trail mud off the truck.
    • vacuumed out the inside.
    • Squirted a bunch of penetrant into that one area of my frame.
    • Aired the tires back up to proper levels.
    • reapplied fluid film to certain areas.
    • fixed some trail damage to my passenger side slider.
I need to know how to fix this. I'm not sure what to buy.

Not currently but I have plans to in the future. I'd like to fix it, then instead of mounting it low again I would zip tie it out of the way until I need it.

On my 4runner I considered mounting it on the back side but that would have made hooking up a pain and I tow a lot.

It seems like it would get old after awhile unless it's a hardshell. I'd prefer a ground tent. I would hate having to collapse a folding tent on top of my truck before being able to drive it. If there's an emergency (forest fire, etc) and I have to leave quick, I can crawl out of my cap and take off in no time.

Or better yet, climb through the cap's drop-down window into the cab.

Yes. Its always best being grounded with Mother Earths Chi and Positive Ions.

I camp a few times a year and always use a ground tent. I feel the same way, I wouldn't want to pack up just to drive. On top of that I don't have a place to put the RTT when I'm using my truck for truck shit. My ground tent chills on a shelf. I wouldn't mind a cap on my bed but I use my truck too much to haul stuff.

Looks like it was replaced once before. You should be able to follow the wires back and unplug it from the main harness.

Then buy a new connector and wire it up later.

Only time I ever got scared camping in a ground tent was in Mexico on the beach. We were fast asleep and Surfer Joe showed up demanding ‘24 Ten Thousand Dollars’. We said we don’t have that kind of money and so he gave us a shot of Tequila.

This is exactly why I have a double cab.

Camping in a shell is the best. The full length windows are pretty stellar in the morning for looking around.

I feel that. I doubt 90% of the RTTers would WANT to take it off when not in use even if they had somewhere to put it. My dad is the same as you - won't put a cap on his Dmax because he uses it to haul stuff too often. A cap and a place to store it off the truck when desired would be ultimate truck utility IMO.

I've camped out of this cap for 10+ years and have come up with my own ever-changing methods that work for me. IMO these Tacoma setups do not seem as utilitarian as they look.

Mirrors ($60 for both) came in today. Dry fit them to make sure they are the proper size.

Gonna score some smaller convex stick ons from the local Stealer they are offering at a good price. They are the type I had on years ago before they faded a bit and couldn’t find them so went another style which are ok and fading now.

Reason for new mirrors is there seems like a slight haze on the pass side which is distracting when the sun hits it at a certain angle. Also, the night vision is obscured when in reverse due to the ‘haze’. Driver side has some scratches on it but still working good and will be replaced anyway.

Edit: This Hand Model Guy on the instructions is a semi-pro.

I wish I could find a comfortable way for my wife and myself plus our 2 big dogs to sleep in the bed. We tried and failed miserably. I'd like a RTT for the quick setup but I may eventually just get a Gazelle ground tent instead.

It's not perfect and a little pricy, but this has tremendously improved my cap camping experience. We don't bring dogs, but the added space from the open tailgate has made it convenient for my partner and I. I've tested it to be fairly waterproof, hail proof, windproof and somewhat mosquito proof.

I have an access cab with backseat removed for my fridge. Even if I left the seat, it's too cramped for my BIG dogs to sleep.

@FirstGenVol I used etrailer and got a Hopkins kit that included new wires and mounting bracket. The Toyota mounting bracket is far superior, and I had to drill to open the screw holes up a bit on my bracket. Then I had to source different bolts from hardware store that fit as none in the kit fit.

Wasn’t a major ordeal when all said and done, was just annoying because I felt like I was constantly running around sourcing the right pieces to make the thing I bought specifically for my model to work.
