So a few weeks ago I decided to drive to work with my 6x10 enclosed work trailer hooked up to my tundra.......with the tailgate down :(. Needless to say I did some pretty good damage to the top of the tailgate. Local body shop says they can’t fix it but they priced out a new one for over $1500. As of now the tailgate as well as the backup cam are fully functional so as much as it bothers me to look at my truck everyday now I can’t justify that cost at this time.

I’ve been looking online for used ones for a few weeks but no luck. Anyway my temporary solution (for $120 instead of $1500) was to purchase a fin that will cover about 95% of the damaged area. I know this is heresy but I just can’t afford the fix right now and I can’t stand looking at my baby all bruised up. It’s a very modest looking wing otherwise I wouldn’t have even considered it.

Does anyone have experience with these? Pictures even? Any other solutions anyone could possibly suggest?

Ouch! I have no comment on the wing, as it's your truck and you can do as you like. However, I'd be scouting for wrecked trucks to snag a tailgate. Surely it'd be cheaper to get one off a wreck and get it repainted?

Ahh yes yes the wing is going to be silly I know I know but I have seen at least half a dozen used damaged tailgates for still over 8-900. Then repair and paint it’s still going to run pretty high. I supposed I can just be patient and keep browsing and hoping to find something

I haven’t used that site before but I will definitely check it out. Shipping cost is the other problem with a part like that. Might be able to find a used one in the right color for cheaper but if it has to be shipped Im better of paying for a new one

Check Craig’s list. I found a brand new super white tailgate from a guy for 250.00

Shipping(if they will even ship) a used tailgate will be pretty expensive. I have a Subaru sti that came with the teenager factory GIANT wing. I'm 46, so it wasn't the least bit appealing to me. Every used deck lid I found, the scrap yard/seller wouldn't ship, or they would and it was the wrong color, so paint & shipping added up to stupid numbers. I ended up taking an 1100 mile scenic road trip to get a paint matched bolt in replacement so I feel your pain. The spoiler you're looking at is very low key. I'd go for it and keep searching for a color matched used tailgate.

I done the same when I was pulling my RV camper and had my golf cart in bed with tailgate down. I repairs my tailgate 90% and put wing cover.

    Depends on the deductible.
    $500, file a claim.
    $1K, not so sure.

When I first read 'wing', I thought no 'efing way.
But after seeing @marckicker46 pics, I don't think the common man would even notice it..

With my issues, I'd want it fixed, even paying $1500 to avoid an insurance claim.
I'd look at that damage in disgust every time I got in my truck.
But as stated, I have issues..

Depends how perfect u want it. Theres damage below what the wing would cover. Offerup/ junkyards/ craigslist should be the cheaper way to go.

I appreciate the photos that really is understated and would at definitely make the damage less noticeable.

You can buy one from Craig’s list or fb sure, but there’s a good chance you’ll be buying a stolen one.

Contact that guy and see. I believe he has posted before. They are either stolen or he is some type of installer and removes them.

I'd talk to a pointless dent guy... they may be able to take the worst of that out so that the spoiler thing covered the rest.

The spoiler isn't bad looking at all. It's a great solution - especially considering how vulnerable the tailgates are. You could do a full repair and nail it again a month later...

Also, I couldn't help but laugh a little to see that the model truck on the Amazon link has some damage to the rear immediately adjacent to the spoiler on the passenger side. They probably bought it for the same purpose!

Those are all very sensible points I think that’s the route I’m going. As much as I’d love to fix it completely the cost is rough and it’s my work truck anyways.

I appreciate everyone’s advice and opinions!

I actually kinda like that fin on the top of the bed. Its certainly larger than stock but still subtle enough to not stand out.
You could pull most of that dent out and slap that fin on there and be good for a while, until you can find a good deal on a used tailgate, which will show up eventually.
