No effing trans cooler?! I'm out Toyota

I wouldn't say any auto manufacturer wouldn't cut costs to make money depending on warranty period failure rates. So since 2019, Toyota eliminated the "need" for a transmission cooler in Tundra's. T4R's, Tacoma's and some Lexus SUV's. I'm using 2018 data for this example due to 2019-2020 have been pretty crappy sales for Toyota/auto industry as a whole except some markets.

In 2018, Toyota sold 505,909 Tundra/T4R/Tacoma vehicles. Now the kits being sold are 850.00 from one of our members, so I will say Toyota is saving 250.00 per vehicle to not have the old system (and incorporates cost of new heat exchanger). So with some math, that would save 126,477,250.00 per year. If the transmissions are more efficient (due to lower viscosity) and outlast the platinum warranty of 120K miles. I would do it in the same position.

All auto manufactures do this very thing. I will give you examples:

- CP4.2 injection pumps on 2011-2016 Duramax diesels, 2019 newer Ram Cummins, 2011- new Ford powerstrokes. These injection pumps are not really designed for US diesel fuels, and the smallest amount of water will cause catastrophic failure. To repair these injection pump failures, you need to replace the complete fuel system and clean the fuel tank. Repair bill is 9-10K dollars and most have not been covered under warranty. There has been several class action lawsuits. GM went to a Denso HP4 injection pump and Denso fuel system and dumped the Bosch system. All this BS over saving 105.00 per unit going to a CP4 from a CP3 injection pump.

Now owners have to decide if they want to risk it (under 1% failure rate, but if you do that 10K is gonna hurt, plus the week long expenses to fix truck), do a CP3 conversion back to the old system which is 1750.00 and 8 hours of labor or probably 10 hours if doing it yourself, or selling and upgrading to a new GM Duramax truck 2017 or newer.

 

Buy a new Tundra. You don't tow heavy enough on a daily basis to even worry about it. Since you are most likely using the truck for "business" use for tax purposes, you're most likely trading up every 3 years anyway. I have yet to hear of any 2019 or newer Tundra's having transmission failures. Some are getting up in mileage as well.

Would I buy a new Tundra? No. I also wouldn't buy any year Tundra due to towing performance at the loads I have. Unless the 21' boat you tow is 8000 lbs....I wouldn't worry about it.

 

I think people are making light of the 20+ threads on this topic already. I have closed a few, combined a few, deleted a few...etc. I can understand the people that already purchased a 19-21 truck not totally knowing about this issue, but for someone that has a 2017 to react like this...a bit much.

Greg got in a dick measuring contest with others on this forum, got pissed off and asked for his account to be deleted. Then the next day made a duplicate account thinking we wouldn't know. We confronted him about it, and even offered him to just use his new account so he wouldn't be embarrassed (which we normally never do). He accepted under the conditions he stayed out of the transmission cooler threads. Nope...just like FLO with Progressive he went right back into the trans cooler threads and repeated the same BS. We talked with Greg and he pretty much told Staff to ban him and he would just make duplicate accounts and do whatever he wanted. Challenge accepted and I hit the eject button on his ass and made sure he wouldn't be back. This is what really happened with Greg. Nobody ran him off but himself.

We all have to consider the source and crunch data when making decisions. Should someone follow what ColoradoTJ says on this topic? No. I do not possess the knowledge to honestly tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. My comments are opinions only. There's always a but....

This is what I would do, in this order:

- Do I tow over 7000 lbs often in high ambient temps? Has my warning light ever came on? No. Enjoy your Tundra for many years. Yes....well move on to next step.

- Purchase a OBD2 monitor system. Are your temps staying within spec? Yes. Drive truck for many years. No...move on to next step.

- Look into installing a front mounted trans cooler or increase transmission service intervals.
