I've been searching for an upgrade from my 2.5"-1" level kit to a lift. I was looking at a few and they all mention that OEM 17's will not work. Why is this? I have a Rock Warrior and wanted to retain my wheels if possible. Would spacers solve any fitment issue?

Not sure how that would factor into the lift?
What lift are you looking at?

If the lift changes out the spindles (I.e, Procomp, RCX etc) then most likely the stock wheels will not work due to the lack of proper backspacing. Example: my stock 18s have a backspacing of 6.85", but my lift required 5" at a minimum (smaller pushes the wheel out)

From what I understand, if you go with a lift that does NOT changes the spindles out, your stock wheels should be OK

Spacers would solve this issue as well, but may affect any potential warranties on the lift. FYI

A little of this and a little of that.
I have the same problem Clinton. I ordered a 3.5"/1" lift/leveling kit with new UCA's and according to the manufacture I need 6" of backspacing on my wheels. Well my stock 18's are at 6.8xx". So I'm screwed until I buy new wheels. For now and until I get my wheels I'm going to use Spidertrax wheel spacers to get my backspacing out far enough. Good luck with your lift and wheels.....

It is generally because on the new spindle, they move the caliper mounts so that the calipers no longer clear the inside drum of the wheel. Some of does have to due with backspacing wheels.
