Shaky at 55 mph

Looking for help! Truck gets shaky at 55 mph but goes away once I get over 60. Had tires balanced and alignment done but no change. Any ideas?

Did you try road forced balancing?
What tires are you running?

 

No road force balance, running AT 265/70 on 17's. Had the same issue with a 2001 4 runner that never got taken care of.....

 

What brand?

There are plenty of threads about BF Goodrich having these issues.

Might be what SouthWestGA said, my truck had a vibration around 55mph, changed out the carrier bearing and all was good. I say all was good because I bought a dorman carrier bearing and it started to squeal around 1,000 miles later. Buy the Spicer CB if you decide to go that route.

 

X3, that was my next thought.

 

Steering rack bushings, LCA bushings, warped rotors, out of balance tires, etc.

Just a check list.

 

It's gonna be the tires 80% of the time. Some equipment, or rather the tech using it, doesn't do a great job of balancing the tires. Worn suspension or steering components may exaggerate the vibration, but rarely cause it. Good luck. and +2 on the road force balancing.

 

Most common source of vibration on vehicles comes from things which are spinning. Two big things that spin are the wheels & tires and the driveline.

If you know without a doubt it's not the wheels & tires, you should inspect the driveline. Visually look at the drive shaft, u-joints, carrier bearings. I suspect it'll be the carrier bearing is worn out, but I'm not a betting man.

 

55mph vibration is classic for an unbalanced wheel. Also, I've had 2 sets of Hankook Dynapro AT2's. I like the tire, but the first set failed on me at 55k miles. I thought that was a good run for a tire, but an odd fail. I'm assuming the belts in the tread area began to separate. Not sure if it was from a road hazard, or just began delaminating inside. I noticed it while trying to rotate the tires to get rid of the vibrations I was experiencing at 55mph, which were getting severe.

Note the giant hump in the outer third of the tread. Decent tread left for 55k though! inspired me to buy another set. Should have gotten some Wildpeaks...

Meant to say out of round tires earlier.

These ‘off road’ tires are the worst offenders.

Lots to check before narrowing it down to tires. Our trucks age has the front ends worn out and tired.

 

I appreciate the help. I am going to start with getting the tires balanced at a different shop. The tires are brand new and hopefully the crew that put them on did a crappy job. It has a new alignment done by a decent tech and he checked the front end stuff for wear.

 

Had a similar issue when I put new set of BFG AT on my truck. Road Force Balance took care of it.

Start with least expensive and work your way up.

#1 - road force balance

 

I keep seeing the road force balance as a recommendation so I will try that asap and post the results.

 

Observe your steering rack bushings. Crawl under while someone above turns the wheels. Looks for play at the 3 bushing points across the rack.

Hope your cam bolts aren’t seized so that you can get a proper alignment. This happened to my truck which led to front end rebuild with New LCA bushings and cam bolts.

I know post is old. I had the same issues with shaking around 55mph on my older Tacoma and now on my TUNDRA.
Started happening around 80k miles on each truck as I actually use my truck for a truck and off-road here and there like a maniac!
After doing the easier stuff myself 1st, u joints, carrier bearing, alignment, rotation, balance, etc. didn’t resolve the annoying vibrations at 55mph.
The fix for me was replacing the lower control arm bushings and ball joint.
A lot easier and faster when doing these fixes in my back yard then paying a shop 300% more!
Easier to replace the arm with the bushings installed. More cost affective.
I did replace the bolts also because the old bolts were hurting.
You will also have to get aligned afterwards.
Later I have the time to rebuild the old arms if I wish.
Although I’ve had no issues so far 50k later. Hope this helps!

Higher caster numbers after the alignment also helps as well. You should check your last alignment numbers against this one.

 

Hey Y’all! FYI: my shaky at 55mph went away with balancing of all tires!
My alignment is good.
My u joints and carrier bearing seemed ok but I did replace as a precaution because I bought truck used about 6 months ago and not sure what has/hasn't been done.
One of the positive things I’ve learned with buying a used vehicle is I get to experience current and future issues that’s for sure.
