Finding parts for my new 2001 Tundra

I just picked up a 2001 Tundra, 4x4, 4.7L long bed. It has some suspension mods, lift kit, some front end work.


It has a knock, when I hit bumps, or in reverse if I tap the brakes hard I can hear it really well, sounds like one of my rear left leaf spring bushings is gone.

The lift kit the guy before me installed was just a block in the rear.

If I am going to get into the rear leafs, (I've done these before, had to cut the bolts, burn the bushings, cut and then press the metal) I would prefer to just replace the springs with a 1.5" (or whatever it actually is, would have to measure) lift spring set.

Now, does anyone actually make springs for this? I can't find a damn thing. I've looked in all the usual places, plus like 3 days of research trying to find something and I can't even find bushings, let alone any springs.

Toyota quoted me at least a grand each side for stock springs, which I don't really want. They do have the bushings, but I prefer the urethane ones.

I have the contact for Alcan, and if nothing here comes up I'll contact them and have them make them for me, but it would be easier if I could find some prebuilt ones, it just doesn't look like they exist.

Also, what about other parts in general? The parts I find from Toyota seem reasonably priced, but I really can't find anything else for these 1st Gen Tundras.

I've seen leaf spring kits for sale for these first gens. They are not cheap. Many seem to go the "add a leaf" route instead. One of the vendors here sells those. For other parts, there are a variety of websites that sell parts for our trucks. It really just depends on what you need. Even Amazon is well stocked.

Ahh thanks that is exactly what I was looking for and couldn't find. I've never used an aal before, would any brand work? looks like general doesn't make one for the first gen.

I would think I would do their heavy duty springs, the sawmill I'll be hauling is only 2500 lbs but I may want to get an equipment trailer to haul logs around.

 

If you want to save some money try Googling local spring shops near you. Having your old Springs rebuilt will be cheaper than buying new ones. On top of that you can have them re-arch them to make up for your left and get rid of those blocks. You can also have them built for your specification of how much you haul. I had 4 inch blocks in the rear and had Sacramento spring make me custom Springs with the 4in lift built in. Only cost me about 700 installed.

 

If you want heavier and taller springs you could find a good set of springs from the junkyard and use some of the leaves in your factory spring pack.

 

Welcome from Northeast Connecticut. There is a Tundra junk yard in Smithfield R.I. Google used Tundra Parts. They only have 1st and 2nd gen parts.

 

Rockauto also carries replacement springs in different ratings.

 

As for the noise, could it be the drive shaft carrier bearing you're hearing? On my own truck it was very sloppy when I picked it up with 100k miles.

Easy enough to check by getting under the truck and pushing back and forth near the bearing to check for play.

 

I ordered new suspension for my 03, came with new shocks and did a level kit upfront. I looks huge compared to the pull offs I got for it. All together only ran 350.00 also added 6k pound springs in the rear so when I tow my cabover to the lake it doesn’t sag.
