Info on BxFx OBD Dongle Engine Gauges Monitoring 1st Gen Only

I’ve obtained this nice wide screen phone dedicated solely for monitoring gauges on the 2002 Tundra 4.7

Please direct me on how to get started with dongles and programming. Purchasing Brands/Codes reccos?

Phone is an LG. Been an Apple Guy my whole life. If there is another link with this info then please direct. Thank you in advance.

Do you mean like dash command or torque pro? Those types of apps? I have dash command; works great.

 

Yes. I think the 1st Gen guys use the Torque App, but I’m open to any other suggestions that work for 2002.

buy the torque pro app, once it's connected go to real time information and hold a spot on the screen until it pops up with the menu, add the type of gauge you want and then it gives a list of the monitors you can choose in green.

 

Nice. I’ve been looking at that dongle (she said). Looks like there are two levels of the app. A $2 one and a $5 one (pro app). I do the Pro App.

Another side question for anyone: Which adapter is the best one for plugging the phone to one of the two over/under outlets on the pass side?

 

I don't have any experience with this particular dongle, and I'm sure it works great... but it's really long. Not a problem if you're only using it for diagnostics where you have it plugged in temporarily to read codes, etc.. But if your plan is to leave it plugged in, that's in a pretty precarious position right over the driver's right leg/foot. I'd be afraid I'd hit it and break it off.

They make dongles with a much smaller "back end" -- in fact I have one. I don't know that mine is better or worse than this one, but I definately prefer the form factor of mine.

Just something to think about.

 

Loving the BaFx Device along with the Ainope Charger. So far so good and I’m working out the configurations.

Test trans temps today in stop and go traffic hovered around 160° until my speed got up the 40+mph and then the temp dropped to 150°. Ambient Air Temps were 83° and my Intake Air Temp was 120°.

Coolant temp steady at 200° the entire time. All flat earth driving.

 

Slowly dialing in the display configurations. Spent some time last night on the best set up and decided the numerical display allows for fitting more onto the screen. The dials and graph stuff are cool, but just the numbers work best for me. The app has a speedo adjustment which I am doping in slowly.

 

The AFR (air fuel ratio) Gauge Option doesn’t work on the 2002. It will load, but reading stays at Zero.

Coolant Temps and Transmission Pan Temps have solid readings. I’m adjusting the Speedo for bigger tires. My first try went in the opposite direction as the instruction is vague. I’ll adjust the opposite direction.

I’m curious on where the Intake Air Temp Reading is taken? My Gauge for this works fine. On start up and at speed the IAT mimics the outside ambient temp closely. When in stop and go traffic or at idle the temp spikes to 120°-130°.

Left the OBD Device plugged in last night along with a fully charged phone reader. The Bluetooth Connection killed the phone battery life to nothing by this morning. Engine fired up so no worries there.

Still stoked on the device but the phone battery shut down causes the app to refresh, thus erasing all my dash app set ups!

Gotta figure a memory setting in this. Not sure if it has one, as I’ve worked all the angles I think.

 

I have been running the torque app for awhile now and I did have to work out some bugs to work out. I had the same problem that every time the phone turned off or died, it would reset everything! What cured it for me was leaving it plugged into a charger and turning it off every night. Now, when I open it, it connects to Bluetooth and all gauges read, then it closes itself out the app, I restart it and it works fine.

This is the adapter I use. I picked it because it was low-profile and I have had zero issues with it.

Since I am newb on these as well, can someone explain the PID's? What they are, why you need to change them and how?

 

Can you hard wire a charger in somewhere? Or make the powere port constant hot?

 

I could, but I do not want to. I think I just need to tweak the phone settings and/or also remember to unplug BT Device.

 

I have no idea. I’m just using the available data options and adding them to my dashboard. Not all of the options work as the truck doesn’t have a sensor etc.

Not sure why someone posted a formula unless their OBD Reader is limited and needs manual input.

The BaFx is loaded with options.

 

Side Note on the BaFx OBD: When plugging in reader before start up, it will cause my ABS Light to flash/blink right after key start up. Upon removal of device, the light blinking disappears. Reinsertion goes swimmingly without problems afterwards.

 

PID stands for “proportional, integral, derivative.”

Basically if torque pro doesn't have a default sensor set up you can custom program one. For example on the early transmissions the default torque pro trans temp reads fine, but on the sealed transmission the PID is needed to get trans temp to display.

To add/change them go to the torque pro app and on the bottom left is the gear icon for setting. Scroll down to "manage extra PIDs/Sensors and add it from there. You'll need to PID codes for whatever you are trying to add.

Any others here also use the Bluedriver OBD reader variant that works with the iPhone? I've been using it for basic code reading/resetting functionality, and it's been pretty reliable.

If you are already on the Apple ecosystem, I figure it just makes sense sticking with the main phone that you have. I'm sure most of us who use iPhones will also have a spare/older iPhone to use as a dedicated reader/display as well.
