2019 2020 transmission cooler missing

Toyota has stated already that the ws fluid is good to 280 degrees.

go on ford and dodge ram websites and forums they are all seeing trans tempt in 200 to 225 ranges same as us.

this is a pipe dream you think your smarter then Toyota engineer and are going to put up proof of what? that your pan temps are 222? there going to laugh at you.

you have a warranty and Toyota designed the veh. use it, if it breaks take it in for warranty then bitch. until then you imagining a problem that does not exist.

 

Just like with engine oil, it’s possible that modern trans fluid is more stable at these higher temps for a longer period than fluid of the old days would have been able to handle

 

Im just curious if Toyota has some new alien technology that allows the trans to run up to 280 degrees safely.

That is insanely hot and has NEVER been an acceptable temperature in any transmission. Ever.

Im not taking any chances or pitching a fit over it.
Im putting a nice aux cooler on mine and wont worry about it ever again.

 

I hope the new system that doesn't include a supplemental cooler works out for all of you... I guess 4, 5 or 6 years of use will be the real test.

 

The problem actually does exist. We shouldn’t have to pull over and let our transmission cool down after pulling a 6k pound trailer for an hour down the highway because the temp warning comes on. That is factual and has happened to me.

 

I’ve read a few posts of the light coming on. That video linked earlier was from a guy on here whose light came on. In that case I would be arguing it with Toyota. I think they told the guy in the video that his sensor was faulty or something.

 

I dont know about the fluid and no one will except Toyota and they won’t release that info. I’ve seen variations of this chart quoted. According to it, all of our transmission should go out at 50k or less. But the chart is old and technology advances. Toyota said they researched and tested it and it’s good up to the 280 # they gave. Unfortunately that’s probably the only official answer we will get.

Mine runs around 185-195.

 

What did the dealer tell you about it overheating?

 

They said to bring it in so they can plug in the computer to it to verify and then they would go from there. I haven’t decided whether it’s worth it or not though. I absolutely disdain taking my vehicle to the dealer. It’s always a huge waste of time and I usually drive away more frustrated than I was before. Like I said, I will add the aftermarket cooler if I find myself pulling trailers that are heavy enough to make the warning come on frequently.

 

Personally, I would absolutely take it in. All of us old enough to have purchased a vehicle know that taking a car in for dealer service requires the patience and serenity of God. A one-time sacrifice, however, will get your issue documented early. This is what Toyota needs to see: A documented impending potential avalanche of warranty claims. Ultimately, telephone complaints are not verifiable; it's going to end up at a hands-on dealer eventually.

All this calling to Toyota is going to accomplish jack. Corporate telephone interfaces are designed to placate the whiners, bitchers, and complainers with as little damage to customer relations as possible. Owners that think they have real problems take their vehicle in to dealer service departments.

 

If you did though it would be documented, if that counts for anything. If you go in every few thousand miles about the overheat light and then it goes out over 60k, you could have an argument for them paying for a new one. Or you’d at least humor yourself with their diagnosis, something like “it’s normal” or “we can’t reproduce it.”

I read these trans threads cause mine went out at 59k on my 2010. According to carfax, the refurbished one they gave me went out at 104k 8 months after I traded it. I knew it had issues and got the same “normal” “can’t reproduce it” answers. I know Toyota doesn’t repair them, only replace, but once mine went out it never ran good again.

 

Good points. I’ll probably bite the bullet, take a day off work, and take it in. I’ll report back after I do.

 

Just curious, were you towing in S-4 as the manual says to when this happened? If so your complaint is valid.

I wouldn’t waste my time, Magnuson supercharger ends Toyota powertrain warranty. Seen a few trucks local with superchargers add a bigger transmission pan and this cooler to keep heat in check, but the cooler just loops in to the system on 18 and older, be more work and $ on 19/20.

Are you planning on hooking up the TT when you go in for your visit? No point if your just bring in the truck.

 

Then I would keep raising hell with the dealership/Toyota until this legitimate issue is resolved.

 

My 10 was SC but had the TRD one so I still had warranty. I added a Hayden cooler and magnafine filter inline with the stock cooler and it helped.

 

They said they would be able to pull up in the computer where the warning had come on previously and go from there.

I don’t have a travel trailer. I was pulling my 20’ enclosed trailer full of furniture when the warning came on. So I don’t have a 6k pound trailer at my disposal to hook to when I take it in. Even if I did, the tech would have to take a 2 hour round trip ride with me to potentially recreate the problem. I’m not willing to take all this that far when I could just install a cooler and be done with it. (I believe that’s what Toyota is banking on most owners that find issue with this will do.)

 

That’s kind of what I was initially thinking. When I made the decision to supercharge this thing out of the gate, I knew that I would likely be forfeiting some ability to have certain warranty work done. I was, and still am, okay with that because I believe in Toyota’s quality and I’m not afraid to turn my own wrenches. Don’t get me wrong, I have no major complaints with this truck. It has 30k miles on it now with no hiccups other than the trans temp warning coming on once. I will be draining and refilling the transmission soon anyway. So we will see what the fluid looks like.

 

It would be interesting to see what an analysis by Blackstone Labs would reveal about the old oil. I would be willing to pay for it if you’re willing to send it in and share the results with the community.

Not sure if its worth or not to have it checked out? Of course its worth it.

If you were towing with the limits that Toyota says we can tow, haul etc and a warning light comes on and you need to pull over to let the truck cool down, yes its worth it to have it checked out and documented.

If they find no codes, at least its been on paper and if it happens again, snap a pic or video of it and take it in again.

 

We need a volunteer to keep the pedal down when the light comes on. I'm not in love with my truck

 

Ya and you bring it in and techstream shows the over temp light come on and the driver continues to drive it for an hour afterwards until the trans fails. Falls under customer abuse and isn't covered by warranty.

You could try it on a very long mountain climb with it overloaded. Techstream wouldn't have a clue what weight you were pulling. Sorry Toyota, no place to pull over on that long mountain climb. But would it kill it?

 

I'm an idea guy. They're not all great.
