46FF27B4-56C9-4CD2-8FA3-1FEECC362147.jpg My 2015 Tundra is a glorified minivan, but then this happened.

I had a catastrophic structural failure of the Toytec Boss front passenger side coil over. The shaft has appeared to have broken its weld and puncture its way into the coil over assembly, thus dropping the truck almost 2” on the front passenger side. Noticed the truck sitting wonky on the driveway, didn’t notice an on road impact (as it’s just a grocery getter). I do live in a salty climate but this still should never have happened. I’ve been in contact with Toytec and I do hope they won’t leave me high and dry, but we’ll see as there is more time on these then their warranty covers, an no hard feelings if not.

I love their product, this Boss kit made the truck ride better then stock and now with a front failure I need to replace the front end and might as well upgrade the whole kit to the Aluma 2.0 series. Again I’m not taking this off-road so I don’t believe the 2.5 is justified but the 2.0 should still be a direct upgradable difference to this older Boss kit. I still have factory upper control arms, so I wasn’t planning on changing those with a direct 3” kit swap and the truck handles fine on the road (maybe not being able to compare it to something with UCA swap) but I just hope I’m going in the right direction staying with Toytec and moving to the Aluma 2.0 Coil overs front and aluma rears.

    What’s your thoughts?

Alberta roads are definitely salty in the winter but I’m a stickler for the wand wash. The only gravel this sees is the 1km from the hi-way into our yard.

 That's crazy. I bet they will do something to help you out. As far as the Alumas, I just installed the 2.5's about a month ago. The only difference that I saw is that the 2.0 shaft diameter is just a little smaller than the 2.5's. You would be happy with them. It is recommended to change the UCA's with the Alumas.

Why did you go with the 2.5 verses the 2.0? Was this an upgrade from stock or a replacement from another lift?

    Because I’m replacing this from
The Toytec Boss lift (which I believe is also a 2.0 but Toytec will need to verify that) and I’m not wheeling I didn’t see the benefits to do shackles in the rear as my 1.5 block and air bags have worked fine. Thinking the Aluma 2.0 rear shocks would be a nice upgrade from the old Boss rear shocks. Don’t think I need the long travel or damper fluid displacement with remote reservoirs. Am I missing something as everyone one here seems to have gone the 2.5 route.

I went from a Readylift spacer and block kit to the Alumas. The ride is so much better. I removed the block and went to shackles. As far as everyone having the 2.5's, I beleive the 2.0's were released after that. I have the Boss with resis on the rear. The Aluma 2.0 rears just came out recently as well.

What were you upgrading from, stock, spacer lift or coil over replacement? Did you also do the upper control arms too.
My Toytec Boss kit was a 3” lift as well but I can’t find a (is recommended) blurb on their website. I know that 3” or bigger there are aligning benefits but my Boss kit seemed to work well without it.

I came from stock. I went with the Boss Aluma 2.5 but at the time 2.0 was not an option in Aluma.. I went with Aluma after a conversation with by bother in law who ran Boss on his Taco for years. He loved them but they rotted out in our salty climate after several years ,was his only gripe. I did do SPC upper control arms just based on research.. everything works and rides great . I don't off-road really but didn't want to go with a spacer this time around .

Have you been spraying your truck with anything to protect it from the salt? It not, this is likely to happen again.

Truck has a under coat protection from Dealer when new, but I wash regular and more so in winter. Picture was pre wash and post muddy gravel roads into the yard off the highway.

That is alot of rust man. It must have penetrated though the weld over time and caused the failure. Add a metal protectant on it and clean them often to help prevent that kinda rust.

I do not have the Toytec Alumas (yet) but very jealous of those that have them.

The undercoating is not on the suspension you added later right? I would soak everything in WoolWax or similar each fall before the salt sets in.

Here in Alberta we do love our car washes that’s for sure. When you make that change in lift what are you coming from and will you go the 2.0 kit or to the 2.5 but with the boss shock rear end Route.

No nothing on the suspension components so that’s a good point. But that was a major push to go to the Aluma series to help with our norther climates here.

They were installed right at the dealer in 2015 and about 100k km or 60k miles ago.

After seeing what my Ultimate kit looked like over time on my Tacoma I spent more money at the car wash over their life that’s for sure, especially during winter. Still don’t think a catastrophic structural failure was warranted though.

To be real clear Toytec and Cochrane Toyota in Alberta have been amazing with this so no Hard feelings with this at all regardless if there is anything to help me out on a new kit. I’m still going back to Toytec because I love their lift and the ride that I got with my last two trucks. I just want to make sure I’m going the right direction with the 2.0 kit verses the 2.5 front coil overs. I ended up trailering my truck home yesterday from the dealer to keep things safe and sound at home and out of the elements in the dealers yard as it gonna be a few weeks until I see any products as things seemed to be on back order.

You can go with either Aluma setup for the coilovers. IIRC, both are 700 lb springs. The 2.5 has a larger diameter shock body than the 2.0 coilover. The 2.0 rear shocks are new to the Tundra.

I would suggest using fluid film on every single bit of metal on your underbody and suspension. That's an insane amount of corrosion. I live in the salt belt and the previous owner of my tundra and myself religiously use fluid film and theres almost no rust after 120k miles.

Thanks will do. A lots of what you see gravel road spray as it was after the rain but I go agree these coil overs have not liked the Canadian climate

Get the 2.5 if you can swing the cash. 2.0 will be fine if you’re on a tighter budget.

Did you go with factory preset on the Aluma 2.5 or adjust? What height is the factory preset on the 2.5’s?
