I believe the wood is stripped where this bolt goes. (thanks to kids always slamming the gate!) Yes, I'm sure I can move the bolt slightly up, or down to fix it but I believe that will be a temp fix until it becomes stripped in the wood panels again.

    Thoughts?

Through bolt with a washer/nut on the end wouldn't work?

Don't you have a washer and nut on the other side? Get a longer bolt?

It was installed when we purchased the house. I'm sure I can get a longer bolt, but won't that just be a temp fix, again?
No, the bolt doesn't go all the way thru the wood panel.

I would change them both out and just thru-bold them.
Its just a better way to do it anyway and overtime it will last longer than just having the lag driven into the wood.
Just get some nice black bolts washers and nuts and replace them both.

It looks like the board is beginning to split as well. All fixes will probably be temporary until the kids are gone.

I had that happen before. I ended up reinforcing it with some plumbers tape and a couple screws across the bracket to the left of the lag bolt.

You could get a bolt and a washer and a nut, or coat the threads of the existing bolt in wood glue and hopefully it'll stick.

Every fix will be temporary; but what I would recommend (other than swapping out that board, and then securing the latch with a longer bolt/nut combo with washers on either side to distribute the force a little bit) is getting some JBWeld wood putty; fill the hole pretty good, then press it into the crack that's developing - extending beyond all borders. Once it dries, sand it down a bit, drill a hole for your bracket - and replace it using a longer bolt/nut combo with washers on either side. Honestly, I think repairing it is going to be more work than just replacing that board.

easier/temporary fix for this is to pull the bolt (called a lag bolt - the other style is a carriage bolt with the round head and nut), put a piece or two of copper electrical wire in the hole (i usually just have 14 or 12 gauge laying around), then reinstall the lag without over tightening. The copper gives the threads something to bite into.

That's what I usually do with smaller holes, such as door hinges. Even just stick a toothpick or 2 in the hole and let the screw bite into that. That would be my approach here also, unless OP can do a through bolt with a washer and nut on the other side, which would be the easiest fix.

Ok, I found a longer lag bolt and used that after putting some wood glue on the slot. Good eye @Wynnded

Nice decision. What type of glue have you used? I know that Devcon 5 Minute Epoxy glue works perfectly with wooden parts.

You can try this. Get a piece of 2x4 block and Two longer lag bolts on the inside of the gate. This is only run into a picket so there is nothing holding it. I just rehung two gates on my fence.

The 2x4 block will give support behind the pickets. I’d make it about a foot long if you can. Just screw it along the whole block.

Wind usually catches my gates and does the same thing your kids do - slam it shut.

Sorry if it was already suggested but you can through bolt using a carriage bolt washer and carriage bolt on the inside and have the nut where the present bolt head is.

The trouble with just a through bolt is it is in a picket only. It needs a backer to prevent pulling out when the gate gets slammed by the kiddos or a strong wind. When these pickets dry in a year even a through bolt will come loose.

It's really not the kids fault though they do wear out everything sooner than most adults. It's a combination of the hardware and build design. If you can put a stop on the post, just like any interior or exterior door has, it'll eliminate the issue long term. If you can nail or screw a piece of wood to the post that the gate closes against so the gate is stopped by the wood strip and not just the latch it should last a long time. Also, it's the framing (2x4 ?) the should be "stopped" not just the edge of a vertical 1x.

    Hope that makes sense

Look closely at the pic, you can see framing/2x4? behind the fence board where the latch is. Something like a 2.5-3" though bolt should hold quite well

Sounds like you need to do through bolts but put a metal lapping band across the pickets that gets drilled and through bolted with the latch bolts. Black wrought iron fencing straps are fairly common and can easily be tailored to your gate.

    https://www.oldwestiron.com/product-p/s-11-3.htm

Just a thought, doesn't need to be this thick but it won't budge when slammed.

I would suggest using stainless steel nuts, bolts and lockwashers and having some kind of a steel piece behind there to give it more rigidity, the stainless won’t rust out and corrode, you can paint it black if you like but if you have some support behind there you should not have a problem with it coming apart
