I have a 2018 CM I bought off the lot brand new. it has 16000 miles on it. I was feeling a vibration, and brought it in to see what the issue was. I was told it was a ujoint and they had to order parts. ( I question why a u joint would go out in 16k) now I'm setting here and they tell me that there are after market parts (clips, and ujoint), and have to send everything off. Also they are bring up that it might not be covered since they are after market parts. Can anyone help me out with this. the truck is pretty much stock, new rims about it. I did crawl under last night and took picks of the joint. Thanks for any Help. I have a call into the sales rep where I bought it

That looks like an OEM part (but made by spicer). You can see the paint on the bearing cups. If they claim it's aftermarket then crawl under another tundra and look for yourself for the spicer marks.

Look identical to what’s on my 11 and still original at 222k. Sounds like they’re trying to give you the shaft

If you bought it brand new and haven't changed anything except upgrading the rims, how can it have after market u-joints?

Repeat it very slowly to them:
I bought it brand new and only changed the rims.

unless the rim size can impact the funtionality. Does it? It can impact cv joints but not the u-joints as far as I know.
Also maintenance (lube) could come into question. But being an '18 is unlikely. I recall seeing something with my truck to bring it back in 6 months to lube or check the lube ...

Rims wouldn't affect the u joint. I'm assuming he went no larger then 20" which is a size Toyota offers stock I thought so no argument there. OP dealer has to prove the MOD caused the failure, which they cant. Go back in there and give them hell.

Spicer makes the whole driveshaft assembly, yokes, and u joints.

I've heard stories on Tacomaworld of the dealer just swapping the driveshaft and not the faulty u-joint. Something about throwing off the balance of the 2-piece unit if it's not assembled the same or rebalanced after rebuild. $$$. But claiming the OEM driveshaft is aftermarket... that's a new one.

I finally found the page I was looking for so I'll leave it here for reference in case someone else out of warranty wants it. Here's Dana Spicer's data page for my 4WD rear shaft. You type in the model# printed on the sticker that's by your pinion u-joint to get any part number you need. Looks if it's the non-greaseable u-joint it's the 5-1350X; if it's greaseable, 5-1350-1X. How fancy, they're identical in size so you can swap if ya want.

Thanks for the help. They replaced it, and it was under warranty. Vibration is gone. makes me think it has been bad for some time.
