Got a question on shifting into 4X4 high....snowing here pretty much all day, not enough for 4X4 and snowing all night, going to need 4X4 tomorrow for sure. I'm in my driveway and have to back out AND I'm on a hill, so....can I engage into 4X4 in reverse while backing out of my driveway or do I need to be in Drive?
    Thanks

You can do it in reverse, neutral, drive

4lo you have to be in neutral

Anytime...sometimes it takes a shift from drive to reverse to engage...or vise verse

Engage it before you back out, be careful don’t switch to 4wd when the tires are slipping.

You'll get the hang of it in no time considering you are going to exercise the 4wd every month or so, correct ??

The 4 wheel drive sometimes takes a few rolls to get engaged. Sometimes a push on the gas or brakes is needed. I think you should engage it before you shut your truck off the night before if you know you’ll need it first thing. Get aquatinted with the system. There’s a little card in the visor that explains it all. Good luck! What tire pressure you running?

I’ve never heard that. If I go somewhere that needs 4 wheel drive I leave it in 4 wheel until it’s safe to shut it off.

It’s a no go to have it engaged in areas that have good traction unless you’re going straight and not turning, in which case it’s fine. As long as he does it let’s say just before going up his hill at the end of the day.

If I know I'm gonna need 4wd in the morning, I just lock it in the night before when I park. :notsure:

It’s perfectly fine, I was driving around in Arizona’s snowy and icy roads in 4hi. Left it in 4hi when I parked in deep snow for the next morning, you still have to take it slow. 4wd sends power to all 4 wheels but not the brakes, you go too fast and brake hard nothing will stop you once you start sliding neither 4wd or the best brakes.

Only issue with leaving it in 4wd would be if the actuator decides to go to shit and then your stuck in 4wd. That could happen at anytime though, but in my experience happens more when the actuators have long idle times.

Drive or reverse doesn't make a difference, you can even put it in 4wd on the fly, up to 60 mph :eek2:, if I'm remembering correctly. Its all in the manual.

In my experience, you actually have to be rolling to shift into 4Hi. If you're stopped, the indicator will just flash.

Being stuck in 4wd is a lot better than being stuck in 2wd!

My truck has not trouble shifting in any situation as long as the actual shift happens below 62. I probably spend more time in 4wd than out of it.

This is true. I’ve experienced it myself. The truck likes to be moving just a little bit at a minimum.
