This doesn't happen all the time, or at least didn't before. Tie rods, ball joints ? No idea what is causing this. Sounds hideous.... is actually much louder than video.

Tried posting video but it's too large... will redo and try to post after while.

Have you checked the power steering reservoir if it’s empty?

You can only upload videos via YouTube.

    Is your steering rack leaking?

Good question... no drips on driveway. PS reservoir fluid level is right at line of COLD MIN.

You guys are so good on responses . Thanks a lot. I hope I can help someone.

I would visually check the rack for any leaks. Is the PS fluid dark in color? If so, I would start by flushing the system and see if that helps.

My '17 makes a groan when I turn hard left. Like, a U turn or pulling out of the driveway. Would love something useful to shake out of this thread!

Last time my steering made noise (like a rahh, rahh, rhahh when turning hard) I had a shop do the full flush and refill with new DEXIII Fluid. Since then, no noises. I now regularly do the turkey baste suck and refill to keep things fresh.

That fresh DEXIII keeps the seals and pump lubed nicely. Hope this helps.

This noise is coming from under the hood... on the inside of the left wheel assembly.

It’s the bushing that wraps around the rack and clamps with 2 bolts. It’s on the left side. Mine makes an awful creaking noise that sounds like a ball joint or a arm bushing is groaning or creaking. My bushings were pretty beat up from my rack moving(I’ve had 33”s on for 40k of 185k miles and starting replace things) I swapped in Urethane ones and the groan changed quite a bit but still there. Rack was bad(slow and tight at both ends) so I replace it with oem rack from Cardone which already had bushings with tubes in the center pressed in. It’s installed, my rack moves around and sounds like a total pos. Horrible if I’m breaking in a turn or hit a bump. Not sure if I’ll shim it to squeeze the rack a bit harder or what. Going to ask the alignment shop. I could replace the oem bushings with my urethane set but would surely void the warranty... What to do??

mine did this and was the lower ball joint. Maybe have someone turn the wheel with you at each front corner to listen?

My 2004 is showing the same symptoms after a rough ride off-road (truck actually left the ground and slammed back down). Have a mechanic friend who owns a 2001 and he said it’s lower ball joints. Ordered a set Wednesday and they come in tomorrow. I’ll probably get to the install Thursday or Friday, and will flush the powered steering system at the same time. I’ll be happy to post pics and results if y’all would like.

I just have the stock upper and lower control arms. No mods on suspension or power/drivetrain here yet. But I have a list of things I want to do. I’ll be happy to post pics and write ups! I’ll let y‘all know when I get the project done.
