I feel the stock horn is crap compared to other vehicles I have had. Anyone else agree?
Had to use it the other day due to someone going into my lane and they didn't even budge.

So now I am looking into a replacement horn kit. I do NOT want train horns or air horns, I want something that I can re-use the original wiring without a relay kit.

I have used PIAA Sport horns in the past, anyone else have an experience or recommendations?

Have you removed the tin covers that snap over the horns? They get a bit louder with them off.

I have no idea what our horns sound like. I'm not much of a honker... more a fingerer.

I would also like to upgrade. Something really easy (like plug & play) and really loud.

The youtube video comparison on the toyota fj of the horn linked above might not do it justice because other than sounding different, it really doesn't sound all that louder.

I didn't know about that. I may look into it but is it even worth it? Removing the grill is a pita and I may just replace it if I remove the grill.

It should be louder according to the specs.
If you want louder you can do air horns but you would have to run a relay for that. The Piaa horns can use factory wiring which is why I was looking in them.

The horn is an emergency button, not an emotional button. Just an FYI :)

    Flux capacitor!
There are several replacement horns that are extremely loud compared to the stock horns. These horns by hella are 118 decibels! Each 10 decibels means that it's twice as loud. IMG_5458.jpg

I've seen those but those have that higher pitch European tone. I was looking at something lower pitch.

    Check this out.

I installed these about a year ago. Much deeper sounding and somewhat louder than stock. I'd like them louder but they do get my point across when I use them :) . Overall happy with them.

Right, 3rd gen. 2nd gen the grill stays with the hood, so horns are in your face with the hood open.

I haven't removed the shields from my Tundra horns yet, difference was notable on the Tacoma, but not shockingly louder.

I had three hella horns from '80's VW's - low, mid, and high tone, all stuck together on a bar with a relay. Had a triple tone train horn sound, but deeper. I built it for my '83 hilux back in the day, then they spent a couple years on my wife's corolla, until they were broken last year when she had a bit of a tangle with a curb.

They did not get ignored, unlike the weak sauce excuse of a horn the stock one is.

Let's hear it... I tried taking off the metal plates off of the stock horn, but it became shrill

Following this thread, looks like good stuff. My horn won't work! I've checked the fuse and it's intact. My engine bay is clean-no melted or chewed wiring. What else can I do short of taking it to the shop?

I'm not a tech but if you have the skills, maybe disconnect the horns and use a multimeter to see if the proper voltage is going to the horn. If so, it may be the horns. If not, then the problem is elsewhere and may be tough to diagnose. You would have to trace it back. I know it is common in Jeeps for the clockspring to go bad and the horn, blinkers, and steering wheel controls all have issues.

The stock horns on my 07 are very loud. Horn is a safety device; not a headunit. Treating them any different is silly.
