As normal in most diy vs pay for play (pfp)
I think alot is being missed and dismissed here. I don't have all the answers so let's talk about corrosion protection in a very serious way.

    It's November 2019
I live in the Ohio rustbelt. Let's talk!

I've done Fluid Film by my own app for a few yrs now. Not as impressed as the "old timers" wanted me to be.

I'm trying Amsoil mphd in a couple days

I’ve used Rust Check on several vehicles and been very happy with it. But it may only be available in Canada. They have two rust inhibiting ‘formulas’. One thin that coats and seeps well. Another thicker product that is meant more to ‘Coat & Protect’ that gets sprayed on over the thinner product, in high wear areas.

Good stuff, IME. I may look into the Amsoil product.

So any difference between the amsoil metal protectant and amsoil heavy duty metal protectant?

I believe the metal protectant is a lighter product more similar to something like WD40 or Fluid Film. Maybe somebody with experience can chime in on that. If you're doing under your truck you'll want the HD MP, it sets up as a thick waxy coating that won't come off easily. It does tint everything brown slightly but it's worth it.

Is there any pricing or deals on MPHD? Or should I just buy from my local dealer shelf

I get my truck rustchecked now. We used to just use old oil or oil and grease mixed.
Krown is another brand garages use around here.
If RustCheck is used from new, they even warranty.

Since FF got a bad rap and I agree with how easily it washes off and stinks, I noticed the Kellsport website (large seller of FF) has since switched to pushing a smell free and thicker stickier product called woolwax now. I just ordered some to DIY a couple vehicles and will report back if I remember this thread! Hopefully better than FF.

I like the approach Classiccat takes. I suppose thats kinda what I've done since I've FF the last few years and just now finished 4 cans of MPHD.
For an 8 yr old frame, this looks good for NE Ohio.

I just did 4 1/2 cans of the Amsoil HD MP on my new truck with only 350 miles. Lowered the spare, removed all four wheels. Got the majority of the frame, suspension, rear axle, underside of the bed and cab... mostly everything underneath that was steel, without getting too close to the brakes because of the overspray. Miserable job but it'll be worth it in the long run. Everything that was shiny silver is now tinted bronze... hah.

A couple things that make the Amsoil application less painful.
-Put a box fan at one end of the vehicle to create a draft. This way you don't end up in a foggy cloud.
    -Wear nitrile gloves.
-Wear a mask or simple respirator.
    -Wear clear safety glasses.
-A tyvek suit would be great but not necessary.

It's not a horrible job, but that stuff makes it a little easier.

Not for or against this product in any way because I've never used it, but does this product have a rust neutralizer used before you just spray over the rust? I would think that should be revealed.

Great video on prep and where to apply except I would recommend pulling body plugs and doing the 360 wand work inside cavities FIRST, then go back and do tight corners with flexible straight tip wand, then large flat east access panels with fan tip last. This way you benefit from the overlap from previous step and easier to see what's been done.

I just got my truck about 6 weeks ago and ordered woolwax. It’s a more viscous version of fluid film and doesn’t smell at all. I used about 2 gallons of it on the underside. Pulled grommets and sprayed inside rocker panels, used wand to get inside all frame members, pulled off tires and spare tire and just got every inch is a thick coating. Took off bed rail caps and sprayed wheel wells. Since it’s a lot thicker than fluid film, it doesn’t wash off. It’s been raining here in Ohio a lot so I looked underneath yesterday to see how it’s holding up. And there’s absolutely no areas where it’s wore off. It’s only been on a month but the results so far look promising. I did it myself in the driveway. Warmed up gallons in front of propane heater while I sprayed it on and it creeps into every nook. Whole process probably took me about 5 hours, but well worth it.

    2 gallons!?!

I sprayed on mine for a couple hours last night and only used a little over 1 quart although I did not do the entire under side of the bed or inside bed sides, just where crossmember and supports could pool water or join together. I also used fluid film in doors and tailgate from an aerosol can because the woolwax nozzle was too large to fit in the door drains. Shes dripping in the stuff. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but it looks like good coverage to me. We'll see in the spring I guess.

yeah I probably sprayed more like a gallon and a half. I bought their pro gun and every single square inch of the underside is coated in a thick film. You should really do the wheel wells in the back. Very easy to pop the bed rail caps off and spray down inside. Like I said though I don’t think you can overdo it. Next year since I have the gun already I’m just gonna but the 5 gallons and do a coat in early summer and another in fall. The gun with the extensions was nice for the tailgate the only thing I didn’t do was the door frame because I read that it can swell the rubber where it comes out on the weather seal.

I also got the pro gun with the wands (and a new compressor) so I shot up around the wheels wells where the bed sides meet the box since pulling my rail caps off would require pulling the RTT bed rack. I'm lazy... lol. I think I'm going to see how much this round creeps and spray another round if need be but I agree, I don't think you can overdo it. At some point there's gotta be no extra value added though just wasting product? I'm happy that I'm set up now and can spray more every year.

yeah I’d imagine the second coat and everything after that is a lot easier since you have a base now. Plus it was my first time doing it so I figured why not just take my time and be happy with what I did. Only problem is now I just bought the front and rear trd sway bars so it’s gonna be a mess putting those on lol.

forgot to mention I did my dads 16 tundra as well. First time he did anything to the underside. So I was able to see where the rust really starts and where it’s the worst so I just doused those areas lol

One thing you might want to check is the front lower cab corner protectors, if they are not sealed up they will accumulate salt and sand and will make a hot spot for rust. I took mine off and put a bead of silicone, then remounted and sealed the tabs on the backside. 20180816_071402.jpg

And as I remember they had double stick tape on them that I took off.
