Tuesday of last week, our 6 year old rescue (had him since he was 7 weeks old) went in for a "routine" teeth cleaning and to remove two very small precancerous skin tumors (one on his head and one on his paw). we got a call from the vet at around 6pm that he was done but needed to stay the night due to complications. They had to extract a molar and it would not stop bleeding so they had to put him back under, open the gum and pack it with coagulant and reclose. The small tumor on his hind leg was spidered under the skin and they could not get to all of the margins. He is extremely muscular (jack Russell / pit mix) and the skin was very tense. Fast forward to Friday and we had to take him in for follow up. Good news - his tooth/gums were fine. Bad news - the sutures didn't hold and he had an infection of the tissue. They added another antibiotic and had us monitor. Took him in yesterday - tissue was necrotic and they scheduled a debridement for this morning. Just got the call that the debridement went ok but there are concerning signs that his paw has compromised circulation and need to monitor closely over the next 3-4 days. Each day he will have to be dropped off, put under sedation and have the wound repacked and dressed. Each day they may have to surgically remove any "new" dead tissue. Vet stated that if the infection doesn't improve and if the tissue doesn't recover that amputation is a possibility. He is such a good dog and an active one (he literally takes daily 3 mile walks with my wife every day). I am afraid if he needs amputation it would drastically change him. I am really hoping he can turn the corner but sounds like it will be touch and go for at least a few days.

I have friend that recently had to amputate his 12 Y/o dogs leg due to cancer. He did a bunch of research and decided that it would be better to amputate because losing 1 leg really wouldn't affect his life style. A have sen his dog now and he is much happier and is getting around better than when he had 4 legs. Anyway the best of luck to your pup.

EB509AB7-2BC5-45BA-9CCB-DF9058182325.jpg My kids always name the pets hilarious names.....always with an ulterior motive Hahahaha. When we rescued this dog they called him Beans because of the spots on his tummy. Well then we rescued a cat.....and they named him Frank. Why? Because they wanted to call the pets Frank and Beans. :D

Dogs actually adapt very well to amputation. I certainly hope it can be resolved without going that route, but even active dogs continue to be very active despite missing a limb, especially a hindlimb. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns as this progresses. Here's to Beans!

Thanks guys; appreciate all the well wishes. I went with him this morning and it took the vet, myself and two techs to hold him down while she debrided the wound and clipped away the dead tissue. I didn't want him sedated with anesthesia anymore as he has been under it three of the past seven days. He is doing well - however his paw is very swollen and the space between his toes is not a good color. Although the vet did comment that it looks better than yesterday. She wants to see him daily until Saturday to monitor the swelling, the viability of the tissue and the infection. Hopefully we are trending in the right direction. We got honey patches that we will replace daily after this week. Thanks for the well wishes, Beans and our family certainly appreciate them.

Another wound debridement and cleansing; looks a little better then yesterday but still concern about the paw. So still trending in the right direction and cautiously optimistic. Thanks for checking in and for the good thoughts!!! Whatever happens, he is an active pup who oozes happiness- and this ordeal hasn't changed that. He will, however, NEVER want to ride in a car anymore. He equates the car with going to the vet now and get extremely nervous. I will have to take him to get treats for weeks on end to break that conditioning and will be happy doing so.

Sorry for the delay in updates; we have been busy. The last eight days we have had to return to the vet DAILY for wound debridement and re-dressing. Today we got the green light to go every other day as long as we do it ourselves in the in between days. So we did it today and it is MUCH less stressful for him.....he allows us to do it with very little resistance and is such a good boy. At the vets, the tackle him, hold his haunches and restrain him for the safety of the techs. He doesn't like that at all and he is much calmer with us. The wound is gnarly and going to take a long time to heal. The tendon is exposed a bit but healing over as well as can be expected. Its going to scar and look ugly but the chics will dig it!!!!! He is not in danger anymore of losing his leg as the infection was controlled and the paw swelling reduced dramatically. His web spacing is normal color again so circulation was restored. All in all, except foe the hits to my wallet, everything is looking great. Thanks again for everyones thoughts and well wishes

Been following to see how it was going, glad that losing the paw is no longer an issue. I'm sure all this was unexpected for you. As incredible as the offer is, we will decline. Save it for someone who truly needs help like that. Just want to let you know how appreciative we are of the thought. If they come to repo the tundra, I may take you up on that

Update- beans had to undergo another surgery today. He had a flap of skin removed that wasn’t healing right. They put him under, took it off and stapled him up. His wound is much better but this will obviously add to the timeframe. He is very tired and sore but the vet said that everything still seems to be on the upward trajectory. Will redress his bandages daily with the honey patches and keep our fingers crossed!
