My Tundra doesn't have the tailgate camera. I’d like to add one. And I currently have the very base OEM head unit.

I’ve added backup cameras on other rigs, so I’m familiar with the process in general. I understand that the truck is pre-wired though, so I’d prefer to use that.

    So my question is twofold:

    1) can I do a straight swap for another OEM unit that can show camera display, and get a backup camera off eBay or a junkyard, etc., and just plug it all in?

    OR

    2) If that would work, it even worth it? Or would it better to go all aftermarket and just run the wire, etc?

I ended buying a camera that I attached to the OEM tailgate handle and ran wire to a JVC head unit. Wasn’t too bad to install. Much cheaper than finding OEM stuff, and CarPlay is handy

Anyone comment on if the horrible camera quality is the camera or the head unit? Cameras are so simple I'm shocked it is so bad.
