Coming from a car with full navigation to one that did not have it was a bit of a downer, however the rest of my Tundra had me happy. So i looked for alternatives and i didnt want to spend the money or aggravation of buying a new head so i started looking for alternatives usint bluetooth and my android phone.

The obvious alternatives Waze or Google maps using Auto Play were not satisfying so i let it be. Today while registering at Toyota Tundra i found the specs to my car. And what a surprise, i found out that my car though having the most basic etunes head, it supported an app via Android or iPhone called Scout Nav. I googled it and quickly installed it unto my Android. Followed the instructions and paired with my car. Once paired it downloaded and installed the Scout Nav app.

I cannot be happier this is the best Nav app I have used and it is all free. Here is the link to info on it and how to install. https://www.toyota.com/content/entune/pdf/Scout_GPS_Link.pdf

Hope it helps some of you in the same situation i was.

Love this app. Been using it for a year and a half now. Several members do not like it however. Not sure why as I love it! And like you said it’s free!!

Did you know that your radio could use it or did you chance it?

I didn’t know about it until someone on here mentioned it about 18 months ago. Have it as an app on my HU now.

There is one problem with the Apple or Android GPS apps and that is there are still places where there is no cell service. In CA along the coast for example, cell service is spotty or absent. In the Sierra Nevadas there are valleys that are out of range of any tower. My cellphone GPS would say: 'No communication, continue on route.'

While we were in Alaska a couple of summers ago we had no service at all with Sprint. When we called their customer service group (using Verizon phones) we were told we needed the international plan for service in Alaska!!??!?!?! Did they think Russia took Alaska back? Found out their coverage on the west coast was primarily in the major metropolitan areas and they only had one tower in Alaska at the time...and it wasn't where we were.

Granted with mergers, etc., things have probably improved in Alaska as well as other areas, but cell service is still not everywhere. Especially if you go off the main lines.

Waze shows you traffic, road hazards, closures, and the location of Police/police traps. It is also nearly dead-on predicting arrival times. It allows you to select from several different routes, and gives you event info and arrival times for each.

Scout gives you turn by turn, and that’s it.

    Sorry to crash the party!!!

To use Scout, do you use a USB cable or is it via Bluetooth?

Scouts predicted time has been accurate for me, and it gives different route choices too, all i need is turn by turn, I drive within the speed limit so knowing where police traps are is not necessary for me, i do not need to see my little car traveling on a map, and as far traffic, weather, road hazards are concerned thats what i have the radio for.

My brother has an android phone and likes Waze, I haven’t tried it yet.
Count me as a naysayer too - Sorry, I can’t stand the Scout app. Not having a map the passenger can use sucks. Turn info/lane info was much faster using iPhone maps, plus I can change the voice to male rather than try to listen to a female voice.
(Important to me, I’m nearly deaf)
Want to find something in the city that’s 400 miles away? Easy peasy. It had warnings of construction lane shutdowns well in advance. I didn’t run into a no cell zone (Verizon) on the 3600 mile trip I just did but I could see where that might be an issue in the future.

I’m far from an Apple fanboy- some of their corporate policies suck azz (managing music) but the nav part I really like.

I have navigation on my Kenwood. Not terrible but is very hard to see in daylight so I don't use it. Drove cross country and just used my phone with Google maps and Waze for speed traps near cities. Worked great, think I only missed a turn once.

Waze does realtime rerouting based on traffic conditions...has saved my bacon countless times.

I must have missed something when I used Scout because I thought it was the biggest piece of crap ever created.

    Sorry, just my opinion

If you use Google maps (not sure about
the others) you can download maps for offline navigation.
