    Hello all,

I need help with this weird sound that I get from my suspension. I am not talking about the ABS sound I know that one. This sounds like someone throwing a hammer to the frame. I think it comes from my passenger side. It happens when:

I am turning and I go over a bump,
When I enter my apartment complex where there is a tiny slope and I take it at an angle. As I am going over it and when the driver side is on the slope and passenger wheel is lower than the driver side wheel,
When turn the wheel and back up...

It seems to happen only when the wheel is turned in either direction. It just happened when I backed up to park it in front of my office.

I took it to a mechanic friend of mine and we looked all over and could not find anything. As we were lifting the driver side the sound happened from the passenger side and it did not happen again. Its like as I am driving something goes out of place and it pops back into place and does not happen unless I drive again. One time I was at the airport parking lot and I started to backup to the parking spot, my parents were in the car, it popped so loud that they both freaked out because they thought I hit a car.

I don't feel anything weird or awkward when I drive it. I feel a very mild vibration on the floor panel when it pops. My friend thinks it might be the shock spring hitting the upper control arm. The previous dumbass owner put that stupid cheap plastic looking block leveling kit that totally ruins the ride and you can see some rubbing on the spring but shouldn't that happen from the first day I bought it? This started to happen couple of months ago and I had it for two years.

5.7L 2 wheel at 84.5k miles on stock wheels / suspension with level blocks(f@in hate them)

Anyone experienced this? Any thoughts? I am really annoyed about it and I'd really appreciate any help.

    Thank you!

Is there a diff drop on it that could be loose? I say it’s time to upgrade those spacers anyways to a real suspension lift.

There are so many things that could be popping like that. Is your sway bar close to rubbing on anything? Also the lower control arm cam bolts are notorious for being under torqued from an alignment shop. How much Lift do you have? I’m also curious about your CV shaft angles. If they are too extreme, it’s possible the CV joint is popping when you’re turning.

Took some pics during oil change while it was on the lift. It started doing it now every time I reverse. I put it in reverse and the moment wheels move I hear it. It's not as loud but it happens especially if the wheels are not straight. I have an rci metal skid plate

Looks like the line and bracket are hitting the coilover. You can see the clean rubbing spots on it. That bracket looks close.

Scratch that. Your on the lift that’s probably why.

My guess is your upper control arm ball joints are done. There is grease slung on your tires and rims.

Looks like the rubber boot on your lower ball joint is torn. A bad ball joint will definitely cause a popping sound.

Wow thanks for the interest guys seriously. I got banned from here for speaking my mind about a member who joined his little kid in making fun of another tundra owner who looked like was trying to make ends meet and I am not sorry for speaking my mind. After the mod banned me for it then liked the original post, I kind of stopped visiting here but this feels warm so thank you all. Thats why I have not updated this.

I think you guys are right. Problem still exists and in any case it looks like it will be good to replace the ball joints anyway. I've been looking to find OEM stuff but I could not find ball joints. Do I have to get a whole upper control arm? Better consult the master @Roman :)

Yep, unfortunately both the upper and lower ball joints are made into the control arms.

What year is your truck? Have you had an alignment recently? Any type of lift going on? Sometimes this popping noise could be something simple. While the ball joints do you look suspicious, that could literally mean nothing. Sometimes they’re just ugly LOL. If you’ve had an alignment at any point, it’s possible they didn’t get the LCA eccentric bolts tight enough.

Its 2014 5.7L 2 wheel at 85k miles on stock wheels / suspension with level blocks(f@in hate them). Prev owner put them on and I just did not wanna touch it. I bought it at 70k flat and have not done any alignment. You may be right but I still would like to change the control arms. I noticed a spot where the control arms rub on the suspension coils I think thats the noise I am hearing.

I am talking with the owner of the post about getting both of his control arms I think its fair price. He said he'd ship. They should do for now till I sell the truck for a crewcab or just get aluma series.

Interesting. I have a similar sound. It's not very loud, in fact I think you have to have windows down to hear it, but I'd describe it more like a ping / tink sound. Going to take a look at my control arms this evening and see if they look similar. Watching this thread...

Also, should add that mine is a 2014 as well with ~98k on it. Stock suspension, wheels, etc.

If this was a crewcab, I'd be looking right now. I don't offroad or haul stuff I bought a tundra because my prev car kept breaking down and had an amazing deal for a double cab that I could not pass. I wanna spend my money on something I wanna keep. This one will be sold so I just want to fix it for now.

It's pretty clear in this picture that the upper control arm is hitting the spring and it appears to be doing it on both sides.
That's where the noise is coming from.
I doubt you'd fix your problem with anything but new UCA's unless you return back to stock height by removing the lift blocks.

Do you not see the issue in this picture?

One thing that comes to my mind is that kind of wear at 85K makes me think that truck has had the shit kicked out of it.

Or does swapping the control arms and adding lift blocks cause the ballpoints to take a knee? But that doesn’t sound right either.

Anyway, my ‘14 has 70K on it and all the stock suspension parts looks great...no excessive wear on ball joints, no rubbing, no grease slung everywhere.

I think it's a combination of both. Adding that block should screw the suspension geometry and I don't know for how many miles it's been there. I don't think truck was abused but it definitely could have been taken care of better. My first 10k miles I did about 5 oil changes because the first time I did my oil change filter looked like it's been dipped in mud.

    Eureka!

Stopped by the mechanic again told him it's now worse than ever bla bla he got under it in the parking lot and found the issue this time

See how that circular thing (I am very technical) is overlapping the lip under it? That bolt on top of them was super loose so the circular thing(what is it? Camber adjustment thingy?) would move in and out of the lip and make that noise. He tightened it on the spot and the noise is gone. I bought it used with a leveling block kit on it so whomever did that didn't probably tighten everything right. I am gonna make an appointment for a proper alignment today. Is there a torque sheet for the bolts anywhere?
