Just installed rear bumper, waiting for front bumper with winch that should be in within the week.
I prefer high clearance for off-roading and simple, minimal design.

I have a 2015, no sensors. But if you have sensors they will make it so they mount in on their bumper.

I've considered getting one to replace the scratched plastic one on my '04, but a buddy with a Tacoma said steel bumpers are a bad idea because even hitting a deer at 55mph can warp the frame, whereas the OEM bumpers are designed to absorb the impact.

Wait so these steel bumpers can cause issues to the frame at impact ?
    That is actually a deterrent.

Also these looks good to me

That one is called a ranch hand.
To be honest I think they look too generic. And with the brush guard up top they look ridiculously over done.

Do the side protection bars have any reinforcement? If not I could see them caving in with minimal effort. I would be very cautious while wheeling.

It depends on the design and mounting system. If the steel bumper is stronger than the frame, the bumper may survive the collision, but the force of impact will still travel to the weakest point.

Today’s vehicles are designed with crumple zones to help them crumple and absorb an impact. This, in turn, softens the blow to flesh and blood humans inside the cab.

I haven’t checked the Tundra’s front frame yet, but many frames have what appear to be accordion-like crumple zones. With the frame crumpling, a heavy and stronger bumper might remain intact in the process as it gets pushed further inward, potentially causing more damage to the truck.

Another problem can be the bumper’s mounting system. If it’s weak, the mounts may fail, causing the much stronger bumper to be pushed inward and potentially causing more front end damage, with or without the frame crumpling.

By contrast, you have tube-framed racing vehicles like desert racing trucks where the front and rear bumpers are equally as strong and directly tied into the tube chassis. Unlike Tundra frames which are designed to flex and possibly even crumple for a one-time crash absorption, tube-framed vehicles are designed to remain intact and not to flex. The driver, suited up in flame retardant clothing and a helmet with a neck brace, is also seated in a suspension seat and in something like a 5-point racing harness. The driver and navigator also presumably sign liability waivers in the event of death or injury.

In my opinion, a better design for a street-legal Tundra would be to have a stronger mounting system than the bumper or frame itself. The bumper should be strong enough, though, to protect from minor front end bumps, but it should also be designed to bend and even crumple along with the frame in the event of a strong collision so as to absorb the impact and better protect the occupants. It should also not interfere with airbag deployment.

The ARB bumper I had on my ‘03 Tacoma met those requirements and is one of the reasons why it was more expensive than other aftermarket bumpers at the time. ARB supposedly went through the trouble of testing it out and being able to advertise its bumper’s compatibility with airbag deployment.

I haven’t researched Tundra bumpers to know if there are any that have supposedly tested their bumpers, though. Just keep in mind that a big, strong heavy bumper won’t necessarily protect the front end of your typical street legal Tundra, and in some cases may actually cause more front end damage during minor bumps if the mounting system fails, or even if the welds fail (such as on a poorly welded top hoop that breaks off on minor impact and pushed into the front grill, hood and radiator).

    Just my .02 cents....

Thanks for the detailed information. All sounds valid and good points. However to be honest I want OEM functionality and War Machine look. In my case it is cosmetics and aesthetics.
This truck will never go off road. But I have not considered airbags as well.

I will take my chances with a steel bumper. I seriously doubt a deer hit at 55 on a steel bumper is gonna warp the frame. Without it I can guarantee a warped fender or two, hood, grill, headlights, radiator, oil cooler, etc. The OEM bumper wasn't designed to do a dang thing a bumper is supposed to do or they would have made it from something besides plastic.

I haven’t installed my front plate but think something can be done as I’ve seen it done on others with the same set up.

Just curious what fender flares you have? I'm looking for some like thr Tacoma trd pro or OR. I like the matte black slightly textured look.

I think you can still get both. Just make sure the mounting system is stout. I once had a Duffco Enterprises prerunner bumper on a ‘99 Tacoma. It was made out of .120 DOM mild steel tubing. So it was stout, but its mounting system was weak. Before I knew how to cut and weld tubing (well, I still managed to blow holes through tubing last time I MIG welded on a piece - lol), I had a local fabricator weld up some stronger mounting brackets and add support tubes to the bumper ends. It ended up serving its purpose when I unfortunately slammed into a solid earthen berm by accident at around 35-40 mph. The mounting brackets and support tubing held up, so the bumper took the full impact. The tubing also absorbed the impact by bending slightly, saving the frame from bending and the front end from damage. Although the bumper absorbed some of the impact and got bent a tiny bit, I felt the rest of the kinetic energy that the front end may have otherwise absorbed if the OEM plastic bumper had been on. So I was a bit sore, although I admit I don’t know if I would’ve been less sore if the front end would’ve crumpled, assuming a hit at 35-40 mph would cause it to crumple.

Point is, though, you can always improve and strengthen the mounting brackets and add extra support if needed. A decent fabricator or off-road shop should be able to help you with that if the bumper you decide to get lacks decent mounts.

Post pics of whatever you decide to get!
