Do JBL decks have a rear CD changer input?

    Hi all.

I have the factory JBL headunit with tape and 6 disc changer, and I want to add an aux input.
I have seen many adapters sold that you plug in to the CD changer input on the rear of the deck, I just don’t know if mine has that without pulling it to check.

Can anyone confirm if this deck has such an input or not?

As much as I’d enjoy a full system upgrade, I have no interest in doing that at this time- I used to build big systems in my cars, but I drive so little now it’s just not much of a priority, but at least I should be able to load an iPod so I’m not stuck with just the radio (I may still have an iPod, but I don’t have any tapes or CD ‘s any more ;-).

    Thanks

You can always use something like an ISimple or PAC peripheral part. I used one forever that gave me a 1st gen iPod plug and retained all functions of steering wheel controls. I just eventually got sick of it and replaced my whole head unit with something Bluetooth. Which if you do some shopping, and aren’t afraid to install yourself, can be had for roughly the same price point.

In my Tacoma days I was interested in doing the same thing. I never got around to it so I dont recall exactly where it was done, but people were soldering onto the output wires of the CD changer. I believe it was just where it went out to the speakers. You could probably find it with some Google action. My Tacoma was an 07 so the unit may be similar to yours.

If you're not familiar with such a device, you can buy a bluetooth receiving device that will plug into your new aux input. My wife did this in her Acadia and I used the same device to bluetooh connect my short wire ear buds with my phone for running. It would run several hours or more on a charge.

    Something like this...

RIVERSONG Mini Bluetooth Receiver, Wireless Bluetooth 4.1 Receiver Adapter Bullet, Hands-Free Car Kits with 3.5mm Aux Jack Receiver for Audio Stereo System Headphone Speaker (Silver) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5PXM80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_U3rzDbTCQVZHW

If you go the route I mentioned, I dont think you'll have an amplifier, but you can probably tap the power and wire up another one for tour aux. It's getting a bit past my knowledge here but I think that can be done.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I have seen the thing on Tacoma’s where you solder on to the board inside the headunit, that might work, but I’d have to tear in to it to find out :)

This, or something like it, is what I’ve beenlooking at,
    https://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-Aux-in-...rentrq:d403bfe116c0ad31c342432afff70c03|iid:1

Mostly I’m hoping to find the simplest, relatively cheap solution, I may just have to pull it and see if it has the plug on back, then decide what to do.
I’m not opposed to a different deck, it just started to get more involved and expensive than I wanted to do once you start adding steering wheel control interface and such.

Let me hop up in the attic this evening and see if I can find my old Isimple. I'm dead certain mine is the 70-1761 plug for non JBL but I may have the 8113 harness lying around. If I do all you would need to do is change dipswitch settings and buy an RCA to 1/8" plug. It tricks the head unit into thinking there are 2 additional sources, I think you press the CD source button and then seek real fast and then it displays AUX1 & AUX2. 1 would be the old 27 pin iPod and 2 the 1/8" headphone jack.

Id let it go for $20 plus shipping if you're interested.

EDIT: Sorry, just saw you're in Canadia, not sure how that would work.Anyone else interested?

I have a JBL CD/Cassette unit sitting here so I took a pic of the front and back. It came out of an 06 DBL Cab Limited with premium sound and rear entertainment system.

An in-line radio adapter would work as well. I used one in the Tacoma for my aftermarket XM receiver and it worked great. I HATE RF adapters and didnt have much hope for the in-line but the sound was loud and clear.

Let me know what you find, if shipping isn’t too bad I could still be interested, if it looks like it will work.

It does appear that there should be an available plug, the middle one in the pic above is what the gtacarkit guys use in their video.

I may just order one of those cheap eBay ones and give it a try.

You can buy a whole new head unit for around the same price that'll come with everything you need from Crutchfield.

Maybe but $140 for a head unit sounds suspect to me. Plus the install takes 20 minutes for the kit. Ultimately I went with the kit because I prefer the OEM look, guess I’m old school like that...
But each to their own I suppose.

If he has the JBL system with the 6 channel amp behind the back seat and three speakers in each front door it's not so easy to just throw an aftermarket headunit in and call it a day. The JBL system and speakers are 2ohm and most aftermarket stuff is 4ohm.

From Crutchfield Tundra with JBL system install notes
When bypassing the factory amp in this vehicle, we recommend replacing the low-impedance factory speakers with standard 4-ohm aftermarket speakers (or add an aftermarket amplifier) to prevent overheating and other damage to your new radio.

Or if you dont want to mess with replacing all of the speakers, amp, blah blah. Use the Metra 70-8113 factory amp integration harness and call it a day. Just be sure to get an aftermarket deck with at least 2 low-level (preamp) outputs.

Alpine, JVC, Pioneer, Sony, and Kenwood all have models well under $100.

Not if you use the correct harness like @MrDirtjumper mentioned.

Again, all depends on what the user is looking for. Some prefer HU replacements and some prefer OEM but with functionality. Either way it's pretty inexpensive to add BT and AUX to the 1st Gens

Yeah, I’m going to try something like I posted (from eBay), I mostly don’t want to hassle with a whole new system, I’m fine with everything otherwise, just want an aux jack.
I’ll follow up with whatever I get installed.

Hey, any chance you would ship to Canada? If the shipping isn’t crazy I’m interested for sure. My postal code is V0n 2m2, if you want to find out how much it might be. Maybe PM me if so.
    Thanks

Got the unit from eBay today, it seems to work fine, I didn’t play with it much yet.
It plugs in to the changer plug on the back as it should, I just ran the wires out the bottom to the center console (it has a USB and a headphone jack). I tested the ‘headphone’ jack with an iPod. To operate I put the headunit on CD with no CDs in the player and it works, controlled with the iPod. I tried plugging the iPod in to the USB, it charged but didn’t play through it.
Anyway, it does what I want, was super easy, pretty cheap, and sound quality seems as good as CD.
