My only Chevy was a 4.3 blazer ,I would never buy another. Leaked oil from the pan gasket and the timing chain cover .Spotted up my paver driveway .Chevy had it in every other week ,they must have dumped a gallon of dye in it trying to find all the leaks. On the other hand my 2011 Tundra started a small drip from both Cam towers at 80,000 miles.

    Yeah I was thinking about that as well. I scanned some Silverado forums and I heard some folks bitching about the cylinder reduction;

"Hello, Just seeing if GM clarified this topic and if an upgrade or system interface is available? I purchased an LT Trail Boss not even questioning if it had Sirius XM as I’ve had it on every vehicle I’ve owned the last 10 years. It’s standard on vehicles half the price let alone a $50k truck. What is GM thinking! It’s 2019 not 1999! I love the look of the truck, but between the awful throttle response and delayed transmission shifting, and inconveniences like this, I’m regretting switching from RAM."

Quick question, is it true that the 6.2L has no DFM, so one would not have to worry about cylinder reduction? If that is true, then certainly worth the wait.

If you think the Tundras interior is outdated, look at the GM interior. Its reminiscent of 1990.

The 6.2 most definitely has what they call "dynamic fuel management"....which is basically the newest version of cylinder deactivation. I would just never own a 5.3 as they just have always felt anemic to me.

Fyi, the 6.2 requires premium so you will pay more up front and more every week. I looked hard at GMs when I bought the Tundra. In order to get the 6.2 I was going to have to get a LTZ. The MPG ratings are higher than Tundras but with the cost of the higher octane gas and upfront cost j passed. Also, not sure I could have gotten the LTZ without the crappy chrome.

Yeah I had a 2014 w/6.2 and the premium fuel does bite but it still got almost 20 on the highway and they are even better now slightly so to me it's a wash and to be honest, the power is worth it especially if you tow. It really is a strong motor.

2020 GM is finally offering the 6.2 in lower trim levels which is what they have needed and will help their sales numbers I believe.

Coming from an 08 Silverado 1500, extended cab, standard bed.

    Traded in with 175,702 miles.

No major repairs other than replacing controls arms and ball joints at 130,000. Towards the end, it started to burn and leak a little oil. Other repairs were nuisance items like evap system shit and electronics like window switches. Sunroof leaked. I think I had it fixed by the time I traded it in.

At the time, the extended cab half tons were out of the Fort Wayne plant and the crew cabs were out of Mexico.

I chose Toyota because the electronics weren't as fancy as the newer Chevy and Ford offerings and the Toyota came with a 6 spd trans as opposed to a 8 or 10 speed. No way I want to deal woth that. Some people call the Toyota drivetrain dated, I call it reliable and tested. I also like the overhead cam engine. Just hope it doesn't leak...

My two major gripes with the Tundra, which I knew about before buying, are the open differentials and the seats arent as comfortable for tall(I am 6'3") people. I'd like to be able to slide the seat back another 1/2-3/4". If I get in trouble with the diff, I'll look at an Auburn.

The trail boss was the only other truck I seriously considered and I’m not sure what your budget is but I looked at the custom trail boss which is more in line with the sr5 trim. It was nice I liked it pretty good but the quality of the interior was just not the same as the tundra. At least in my case I could tell a legit difference between the two and that combined with the cylinder deactivation horror stories and my own personal experience with crappy gm trannies turned me away. But I have to say the trail boss looks are killer. Also the custom trail boss was about 41,500 for a crew cab and the sr5 tundra I got was 38,500 and it came with way more features. The custom trail boss didn’t even have storage in the console. Now the LT trail boss is a lot nicer but the prices for those are in the limited off road trim territory of tundras and I’d choose the limited tundras interior every day of the week.

This... I drove a 2019 for a couple of days while my 2015 Z71 was getting warranty work on the tranny. I hated the shutdowns at every light. Sold the 2015 and now I'm a Tundra guy.

Seriously, it was turning off and on a traffic lights with no way to disable? I thought the DFM behaved differently than the auto-stop start feature, or are they one in the same?

The 6.2L GM motor is an absolute beast... the 8 speed transmission is trash. They went to a 10 speed in 2019... the jury is still out on it.

Yes sir, it shuts down... it isn't cylinder deactivation.

I wouldn’t doubt the next gen Tundra to shut down at every stop. Anything over 7 seconds at a stoplight of idle time, fuel is being wasted.

Yup..the 8 speed sucked. The 10 speed I drove was really a nice unit in the 150 miles I put on it. ha That was one more reason I didn't pull the trigger....just to many unknowns and I don't have the time or patience to deal with warranty work.

I test drove one before picking up my 19 tundra. I personally didn't like it. Felt cheap to me. Didn't handle all that great either.

I'm not saying you did, just pointing out the fact that Toyota also makes vehicles elsewhere...look at the Tacoma which a good majority is made in Mexico. Why not expand more in San Antonio. That said I had bought the Tundra because it was USA made and my Tacoma I bought in 2012 I made sure it was a vin5 as well.

I don't think it really matters what you own anymore, they all have issues and its a crapshoot. It just depends what you want to deal with and what you enjoy driving. I have owned Chevy trucks and Toyota trucks..both my Toyota trucks had to have expensive repairs early (Tacoma aip @ 29k and again at 53k not covered by Toyota, Tundra Cam tower at 21k covered under warranty) where my Chevy trucks didn't but heck you get resale and reliability with the Toyota trucks right? The Tundra is a good truck but Toyota plays it safe and doesn't push the envelope with it, when you change things that's where issues arise. Look at the gen 3 taco rollout and all the Tsb, recalls and issues and that wasn't even an all new platform. Toyota isn't immune to issues either.

I didn’t bother reading all the posts after 3rd one. I’m sitting in a 2018 Silverado as I type this. It’s my work truck. It has 11674 miles on it. Fuel pump has already gone out on it. Our fleet is f-150’s and silverados. 23 of the Silverados have gone down for fuel pumps all about the same mileage. Some 2x’s. I can tell mine is gonna go out again soon. I had a 2015 that had same problem, the bought it back and am now in a 2017 Tundra as my POV. Will never own another gm product without a simple 350 in it.
Our f-150’s , the eco boost ones the turbos go on them at about 30k. The v8’s do ok. Still wouldn’t own one.
If you go with a gm, just know you will be at dealership a lot for repairs.

The one I’m sitting in says mfd by General Motors de Mexico.
And on top of that, if you go off road you CANNOT turn the traction control all the way off. They’ll tell you you can disable it, nope.
You can keep it in 8cyl mode by putting it in L(manual mode)
Only good thing I can say about it is the ac works great, when it’s running. And I’m in Yuma.

I had a 2002 suburban that went 260k on the original drivetrain before I traded it in. Those early 2000s 5.3s were unstoppable. If they still offered that engine without the cylinder deactivation, it would be a game changer for me.

I disagree. When you have years... decades of comparable reliability and defect data, it is not a crapshoot. If you ignore the available data, then it is a crapshoot that is borne out of ignorance.

    The numbers simply don’t lie.

Yep, our headlights and taillights are made in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Was at the facility (North American Lighting) back in March and will be going back the week after next.

Only pic I could get because it was in the front lobby. No pics allowed.

Had a 17 gmc 6.2 w 8 speed, lost reverse gear at 800 miles, lost touch screen at 15k, after that it was traded.
i did really like the 6.2 but that's it.

I had an 04 Z71 Suburban that I sold about 3 years ago with the 5.3. It never missed a beat and spent at least 3/4 -of the 180K mileage getting to a rough arsed rocky hunting lease outside of Junction, Texas. I bought it new for my business... but it just kept going. Longest I have ever held a vehicle time-wise. A waterfowl hunting club here in Texas bought it for their other club in Canada. I talked to the guy recently and it is still going strong for them.

Completely agree! I had an 03 regular cab 1500 with the 5.3. That thing was rock solid. Would still have it if it wasn’t for the rust chewing through the frame. That’s when I went to a 15 Silverado with a 5.3 and said never again

My in-laws have always had Tahoe’s and Suburbans. They drive the piss out of them- normally to about 200k before selling or trading in.

Those things are pretty reliable from what I have seen.

They must do something different with the truck division.

The Trail Boss is a great looking truck. I looked at some the other day— but Chevy is stingy with the 6.2L. All had the 5.3. And yes, the cylinder shutdown might prove problematic.

It's a new configuration. How could "DL" possibly know how good the 19 Trail Boss is long term? Guessing I guess?
