I’m almost “OK” with the sound the stock radio/head unit provides on my 2013 SR5. I am however looking for a pleasant upgrade in sound quality (without going to a new head unit and subwoofer, etc). Was wondering if anyone here had just changed out the stock speakers with something of higher quality and what the results were? Appreciate your comments

I changed mine out bug added a sub and amp.

Kept the head unit but that will be my next replacement

Start with the speakers and change little by little

The difference in sound makes me enjoy driving it

I do not think new speakers will improve your sound much. There is not enough power from the HU. The stock HU is like 12 or 20 watts.

Many aftermarket HU's are 50 watts x 4. I replaced the stock HU to get Blue tooth and back-up camera and was pleasantly surprised with much better sound. The stock speakers sound much better.

@james@tech12volts has done a bunch of work with Tundra audio improvements. PM him and bend his ear. He may have a suggestion not mentioned.

The speakers may make a small improvement but the problem is an underpowered HU. Btw, the stock speakers are embarrassing. If you yank one you’re gonna laugh. It’s probably a 5 dollar speaker.

The factory non-jbl speakers are hilariously cheap. They do sound fine, but volume is lacking IMO. When i took them all out two weeks ago i literally laughed out loud once i had the stock speaker in my hand. However, the above stated is true. If i remember right, the factory speakers are like 14 watts a piece or something like that. So when you put decent speakers in, you are going to have to drive the factory head unit much higher to get similar volume. I put in Polk DB 6502's in the front, and re used some pioneers in the rear doors. I installed my full system in stages, so before i had a chance to put in my 4 channel amp for the speakers, the factory head unit had a hard time powering them. If you truly want to avoid an amp for the speakers, then i would try to stick to lower wattage/more entry level speaker that are more intended to just be a factory replacement. If you really want to upgrade both quality and volume, you really need to get an aftermarket head unit and 4 channel amp.

I’m in the same situation and hoping I can see good improvement in volume and sound quality with amp and speakers. I like the functionality in the head unit and would prefer to not spend money on a head unit that does less.

IMO, a decent carplay unit offers everything a new tundra offers, at least for my 2013. I purposefully looked for a 2013 without nav and without jbl and with rear view. Then proceeded to overhaul the whole sound system. I have about 7 rms to each speaker, and about 800 rms to my alpine Type r 10 in the crewmax, and boy does it sound good. I exclusively use apple carlplay for music and maps/google maps. and my back up camera is in the rear view mirror, which i wasn't a fan of at first, but it actually makes sense to have it there.

I replaced the door speakers first, later on the HU and and I added the Sub weeks after that.

Most certainly. Unless it is a modest amp, the speakers may not last very long and need replacing as well.

edit: I believe so if you have the non-Premium JBL system. If you have a Premium then not so easy.

Did front speakers only first. Kept that way for almost 6 months. I don't have passengers so I just move fader to front. Trust me an amp and speakers is the way to go. I even had some very efficient Infinities. Without changing out the amp the improvement is barely noticeable. Add the sub and gets even better.

Sorry to derail the thread, but people keep saying only JBL units have amps. I have a 2019 CM SR5 that had the Entune premium w/apps. Non JBL. It has an amp under the seat. I have been trying to find specs on it but all I can find are the units for sale on fleabay. No specs listed on the auctions.

Is there a plug and play option for it?

For those that keep saying there is no amp on the non JBL, below is the part number. Google it. Pictures are below as well. Pictures from under MY front passenger seat. The part number is stamped in the top.

When I dynamatted or sound proofed my door panels. I bought some infinity Kappa speakers. They sounded worse because of my stock JBL head unit. I think the ohms on them was different? Pulled them all back out and sold them . My stock JBL system sounds pretty dang good! 11 speakers and a sub. I think the Dynamatt helped some? I would guess that it would take about 2k to get a really bangin system to replace my stock JBL? All three Siennas I have owned also had stock JBL and they rocked too. Good luck. D

You could consider *********’ five channel amp, add a subwoofer that fits behind the back seat, replace door speakers, and disconnect dash speakers. ********* TXD8005 is almost plug n play (you need to run a power connection to support the additional power of the new amp.) It works well in my 2019 CM. Subwoofer makes a huge difference and requires more power than the stock non-JBL offers. Their web site provides a description of the stock power amp. I found the site quite useful. (Some on this site will disagree with me; I have recently dealt with ********* and had a good experience.).

Thanks. Good to know there is a plug and play option there. As for taco tunes I'll pass. Check out current thread in this forum https://www.tundras.com/threads/*********-nightmare.48527/

I did Tech12volts full audio upgrade through the recent group buy and switched everything out piece by piece to see how it would change incrementally. The stock door speakers suck and with the non-jbl or even the jbl premium you arent going to get much if any improvement with just door speakers. It made the rattle in my jbl premium door speakers go away, but the speakers werent as loud and i wasnt happy until i added the amp. You need more power to make them louder. Once you add an amp or new HU you will realize how bad the speakers are and want to switch those too. It wont be too expensive to get something to make you happy. Hit up James at Tech12volts.com or even go the ********* route. The difference between the two are James sells name brand equipment and ********* rebrands an unnamed brand of equipment as their own. People have been happy with both. Both will make it virtually a plugnplay upgrade.

Sounds like you needed more power. The lower the ohm the more power you need and visa versus. The premium system wouldnt have been so bad if it werent for how much bass the door speakers put out. Rattled the door to death when loud. I too sound deadoned the doors inside and out and it does make a noticeable difference, just not as much as i was hoping. Im going to do the floor boards next. I think that might be necessary to really make a difference
