I'm going to add one to the wife's car. Nothing too fancy. Who here has one?

Thus the reason I now own a Tundra. That 2006 Tacoma was great, but I'm loving this beast. Neck and back are slowly improving.

Yup Steve, no argument there, the one part of this whole process that hasn't been a fight. I suspect that too would have been a fight without the footage.

Due to the wide angle lens in the dash cam, it looks like the other car is further away than it did in person. I had time to get on the brake pedal, and that's about it. The same goes for speed perception in my opinion, I was going about 50mph (below posted) prior to my attempt at stopping. Damn physics. ;)

Oh, and the driver of the other car survived major injury as well, amazing, since the inside passenger door panel of her Hyundai was touching the driver's seat.

Sean, I really didn't intend to hijack your thread.:(

But to anyone thinking of a dash cam, go ahead and get one. Things happen way faster than we imagine sometimes, and solid evidence of what happened is worth WAY more than the cost of the camera and memory card you ever need it. I got mine from my brother for a birthday gift earlier this year, after his identical dash cam saved his bacon in a much more minor incident. As for the cam itself, the worst part is the instruction manual - typical poor translations, but once you get the setup figured out, it's good.

It comes with a pretty nice suction cup mount, so it was on the windshield on the far side of the rearview mirror.

It comes with a power cord with a cig. plug, but I bought a mini-usb power convertor similar to this:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Power-A...258951?hash=item3f29cd4887:g:ui8AAOxyXHpSQqM6.

I mounted it above the overhead console in my Tacoma, and used the existing compass ignition power to supply it. I haven't installed it in the Tundra yet, but with the compass in my mirror, there must be ignition power and ground up there. The mini-USB cable I ran out between the headliner and the windshield with the excess secured above the overhead console, clean and neat when done.

On the 25th of Oct my Wife was north bound on Hwy 63 just north of Houston Mo in our 2015 Rav 4 when an idiot ran the stop sign for Hwy P and hit her in the right rear wheel, it spun her around on two wheels and she ended up in the south bound lane pointing South. The guy stumbled over to check on her (she was just shook up and mad as %$#). He said 'I am drunk, it is my fault' and he told the Hwy Patrol that also, he couldn't even stand up without staggering around and this was at 7:50 in the morning. He was driving on revoked license but he did have valid insurance. His Insurance (Progressive) is taking care of it with no problem. I'm giving serious thought about getting one for her Rav 4.

Having grown up there- I can honestly say I-64 and its tributaries are home to the worst drivers on the continent.

D.C./NoVa just has more traffic with no escape.
I'd definitely recommend a dash camera

I have the DOD LS460W and the video quality is great. Plus it has GPS and speed tracking which can be turned on/off.

Here is my blueskysea cheap Chinese cam that shoots amazing video during day and night. Can't find any better quality @$50. I have these in both of my vehicles and it's great. There is some brands out there for over $100 that won't make as good quality as this. If you want a good quality cam it would be 250+ range, from my research.

True, I suppose there are times when the video evidence could work against the driver in an at-fault situation. Though in the end, the truth is the truth.

I'm no lawyer, but I can't see how evidence like dash cam footage wouldn't be admissible in court. My camera also has the ability to add a GPS antenna to display speed on the video, an add on I did not have installed, again, that could be a two-edged sword. I drive like a grandpa anyway, so will probably add that antenna if I can figure out an easy way to run the wire to the exterior.

I've got this in my truck and my wife's car: https://www.mobius-actioncam.com/

I like it because it is small and I also wanted something that doesn't have a screen on it. It's actually pretty hard to see that there is a cam in there, looking from outside the truck. In my Tacoma I had one rear facing as well. Might get around to doing that on my Tundra as well.

For install, you just need a 12v to 5v adapter and a windshield mount. Can find some power and a ground in the overhead console.

Good call on the camera purchase. Excellent price too. IIRC I paid about $80 more for it, but that was a couple years ago when it was brand new. I've had nothing but great service from this cam and I suspect that your results will be the same.

I forgot to mention @driverdog (and don't know if you've noticed yet), but the video files are HUGE. I had originally set my cam up to record 5-minute vids, but after seeing how massive the filesize was, I dropped it down to 3-minutes per just to make them easier to deal with. Even then the files are ~350 MB on average.
