285/65/20 On Stock Rims With No Lift?

Does it handle better with the wider tires? How the ride quality?

 

Wow, I'm running 275/60/20s on all stock. Want to lift the front by 3" and run 285/65/20s on stock wheels, but there was a question from tire dealer about whether I would have issues so one suggested that I run your size. But you're running those with stock, no lift and have no rubbing issues, after skid plate bend. I know the 285s are a bit wider, but we're talking less than .4" and I don't have discount tire near me. Guess, put on the lift and see what I'm working with before deciding on tires. Thanks!!!

 

Had 285/55s on for the last four years. I don't think there was any noticeable difference in ride quality. This is on a 4x4.

 

I ran across a post somewhere about 18-months ago where someone said it would work, but they had no photos and others chimed in saying they didn't think that was the case. Was going to buy an '18, but ran across a very low mileage '14 from a farmer - only downside was that the gravel roads had chewed up the tires pretty good. Decided to try it and ran it for 1k miles before I ran into a situation where I had to do a hard-U in the middle of road and that's when I found the rubbing - took a 1k miles before I found the rub if that tells you anything. Bent the skid plate up and haven't looked back. My only real concern would be for someone up north that had to deal with packed snow/ice in the fender wells. Again - not a monster truck or huge tires, but now looks like a truck. The gearing / engine rpm's are perfect for this setup in my opinion. Tire dealer had a set of new takeoffs that were 285/60/20's I almost went with, but I really wanted the taller tire - gives a little over an inch more of ground clearance. If you go with an A/T tire it squares up the fender wells much better so the tires don't look tucked under nearly as bad as the rounded P tires. I obviously can't guarantee every tire is the exact dimension and mine is a 4x4, but there is still a little room just in case. I think the rubbing issue may have come from people that were using spacers which not only push the tire out, but also changes the way the tire interacts with the wheel wells when the tire turns. As far as the 285/65/20 - would probably work, but you might see rubbing at full lock on the foward splat - in that case, just take them off. If you go off-road a lot, you would probably want the lift or 5100's - I like the look, just wasn't willing to get into all of the hassles with that on my truck.

 

I'm picking up my truck tonight with 285/65s installed on my stock platinum wheels. 1" spacers were needed for UCA clearance. Apparently I have a very slight front plastic rub and none in the back. I'll post pictures later.

 

Awesome - be sure to post pics. On the front wheels you can remove / trim the splats if needed and I understand you can use a heat gun to bend the rear of the front wheel wells back enough if your just mildly rubbing at full turn.

 

Spats are already removed - so hopefully it's nothing too serious with the heatgun!

 

Keep in mind the difference in diameter between a 285/55/20 @32.4in and the 285/65/20 @34.6in.

Hopefully not. If its while turning the wheel - the spacer is likely exaggerating the issue. Going from a 275 to a 285 should be less than a quarter of an inch inside and a quarter of an inch outside - width difference based on what I'm seeing is only about .39/.40 of an inch difference in width total between the two tires, but I guess when you add in the height too I could imagine its getting tight. I'm sure you will be able to work it out - if you can't get it trimmed / melted in / cussed in, then you might consider a smaller spacer. The geometry gets in above my head, but I believe the spacer while helping the clearance on the UCA, also makes the liner rub worse when turning. Very curious to see what the 285/65/20 + the 1" spacer looks like on the truck - I might have to go shopping again.

 

Nevermind - I just noticed you were running the 285/55 currently. Still want to see what it looks like!

No spacer, lift or anything. The wheels are 20x9, offset is +50.

 

Totally understand the spacer tradeoff. It's very close to 1" UCA clearance with the spacers. I do need to so some minor plastic cutting.

 

Here we go. I think I'll have to cut/mold plastic but I'm clear of metal. Some rub at full lock and reverse. 285/65 Cooper AT3 XLTs

 

Sorry I'm not here often. But I ended up swapping the UCA a bit after it. They got like 99% perfect alignment but it was very slightly off, not much but I wanted it perfect lol. Had to get UCA's for more adjustment range. But I guess the tires had alot to do with it not rubbing.

285/65/20s Cooper AT3 XLTs on stock platinum wheels with 1" Bora spacers. I have the Toytec Boss kit w/ the add a leaf kit (3/1.5) and SPC control arms. I pushed my front plastic forward so that doesn't rub anymore. The back plastics still rubs slightly. I'll trim it later. I could probably do without the spacers but it's fine for now.

Out of curiosity, why the 1" spacers?

 

I bought them just in case and let the shop decide while they were installing tires. I think it looks like they will clear but I need to grind down a 22mm socket to take them off. I didn't have the time to do that yesterday - so I just focused on trimming plastic.

 

I may be wrong but I think the need for a spacer has to do with UCA clearance. My stock TSS wheels clear the BFG KO2s by about an inch. If I had spacers, I believe I would be in the same situation your pictures show. I have 1/2" clearance at the mud flap. Spats didn't clear.

 

Yes you're right it was about UCA clearance. The tech thought they might be needed for the UCA clearance but it looks like plenty of room to me. Because of spacer / tire combination I have some slight plastic contact. I had the tools to change the plastic yesterday so I tackled that.

 

I've got plenty of clearance from the uca with my 285's without spacers.

285/55. But as much room as I have, still should leave enough room for 285/65's

 

Yeah that’s what I’m currently running and have a lot of space. Waiting for tires to run down more so I can jump to 285/65. I have 2.5” Bilsteins front nothing rear and Spidertrax 1.25” spacers.

 

I thought so too when I had 285/55s but bought the spacers just in case. I also bought bumper shims but don't need them now. I wanted to have all the knobs to turn when I put on the bigger tires.

 

I forgot to mention, my wheels are +50 offset.
