I haven't yet played with them. Not programmed yet, was waiting to see what others had that would be most compatible.

I want to say majority of the group is running baofeng. Plus it’s cheaper. I have no complaints

Either will work. Boefang cost less. The FCC does not approve of Boefang though... although I really know nothing: I have no idea what the FCC doesn't lik about them. Or what penalties might exist for using, o under what conditions. :notsure:

You really don't have to worry with LT. They can't cite you if they can't catch you. :bananadance: It's like encountering a bear. Just can't be the slowest.

either will work. if you're going to 'cheat' and not get a license, you can sneak by just fine with baofeng. it'll serve you well doing runs with this crew. i'd recommend just getting the license. it isn't difficult.

here's the issue with the baofengs...

I’m a total noob when it comes to these radios. I read that article and literally didn’t understand a thing haha. Other than the government is unhappy.
What is involved in getting a license? I’m guessing there is an application and some sort of monetary fee.
I never would have guessed that I’d need a license to BS with some buddies over a radio while out in the desert...

if you want to BS with a CB, have at it. no issues. the baofeng, kenwood, yaesu or icom are HAM handhelds. HAM is a specific set of frequencies, Amateur Bands, governed by the FCC. just like FM/AM, if you want to use a frequency, you need to be licensed for it. can you sneak by without it? totally.

more official definition of needing a license

the cost is $40. study for the test. find someone local that administers the test. pass the test. get license. the test itself is not difficult and there are plenty of study guides and practice tests online.

Okay that makes more sense, thank you for educating me. Just curious, is there a reason why you guys use these radios then vs a CB?

no worries. take a peek at ARRL if you need more info or ask away. the reach of HAM is much much further than CB.
