That's the carrier bearing. I think there is supposed to be a little play, at least my 07 with 180000 has a little play. You said it was a lot you may want to start there, or at least have a mechanic check it.

Yea, checked the play on my 03 Tundra and there is some but it looks like there are no tears. In my 08, there is plenty of tears on it.

Well I’ve had enough of the guesses. I feel that if it is transmission related I am only going to make the problem worse by waiting. I made an appointment with the dealer to inspect it this Saturday.

I'd be suspect of any of the ignition coil packs that were affected by the oil leaking into the spark plug tubes. And I'd be rechecking for oil in the tubes and on the spark plug isolators.

Have them check the misfire count data while they are diagnosing, (Not just for misfire codes)

Well I was driving it today and it shuddered pretty damn hard around 30 mph. Looks like I’ll be driving my first gen for a bit. Man this sucks!

What I suspect is the previous owner did not maintain the truck properly and he let it go to shit. I swear he probably used that shudder fix because it did not shudder when I test drove it.

Now I’m going to shell out lots of money to fix it. If the dealer wants to charge me 1300 for a damn valve cover fix, I can only imagine what they want for transmission work.

    This blows.

I think it's something alot more simple then a transmission.

Sounds like usually comes on at a certain speed. Your already into it, get it fixed and drive it till the wheels fall off, which they wont. Ever., I have an 08 and beat the living shit out of it and all ive every had to do was put brakes on it , I'm at 180k I offroad it, river bar doughnuts, tow 10k of rock up 1000ft climb to my house, pull trees off the road, and not just off the road. I'll pull till the tree breaks or the truck stops, that truck is bulletproof you just have to figure out its 1 issue.

Let’s see how I can again break this down ...

If you feel comfortable changing the spark plugs in a (simple) car, then double that feeling and then you now can change the VCG plus plugs!!!

And instead of paying $1300, you can save $1150.........

....are you up for the challenge with some simple tools and a extra pair of hands?

Yaaah?? Eh Nada??? This is no commercial.

Does it have a lift? If so it may need the carrier bearing dropped. When I did my lift I got the same shudder you speak of
If no lift it still could be the U joints before the get sloppy the freeze up the the needle bearings in the cups self destruct then the get sloppy but if there in the frozen state they can cause a nasty shudder/vibration only way to tell is take the D shaft out and check them for ease of movement

Ant did you happen to find the problem of the shudder yet? This just started yesterday with my 08... she has been mine since day one I have driven all of her 276K miles on her.... so it is not an abuse of truck problem... just old age I am afraid... haven't looked under her yet but I have the same shuddering feeling while at a decent speed and giving a lil more gas... I have no clue what the problem is... I will take a glance under her later and see if the carrier bearing looks similar to yours.. if you determine what is causing the shudder could ya please let us know.... thanks... Tamu

Update: Wow, this purchase is becoming more of a nightmare by the second.

So the truck is still with the dealer. They did call me up and said what they think and it is not good. They think it’s the torque converter. They’re still going to check other things and see if they can fully rule out the torque converter. I’ll get a full answer tomorrow.

The biggest problem is that the dealership noticed a discrepancy in miles. Turns out I got scammed hard. The true mileage is around 245,000 last reported. The odometer is wrong and I don’t know if the previous owner rolled it back or the owner before that.

On the plus side, the truck barely shuddered when driving with the technician. Hopefully, all it needs is a transmission service.

I am so bummed out. This is one huge lesson for me. I am young and inexperienced, a perfect target for scammers.

I just got it back today.

It is in fact the torque converter.

They recommended a new transmission with an estimated price tag of $7,000.

I am just going to rebuild the transmission where my father had his F150 rebuilt at. He charged him $1,500 and that was a year ago. And my father uses his F150 for work everyday so he did a great job.

I will be looking I to a new truck with in the month thanks for the info and good luck!

It may have already been mentioned. But for your shaking problem, I would check your drive shaft carrier bearing.

It’s the torque converter for sure. I added a bottle of the shudder fix and the problem went away completely. But I know I am on borrowed time. Still deciding whether to rebuild or just get a new transmission.

I have an 06, it had the same vibration. Turned out it was the parking brake staying slightly engaged, cables needed to be replaced. Even after replaced cables the vibration came back, I found if I tapped on the sheathing where the cables go into the rear disks it would be enough to dislodge the parking brake and no more vibration. So now I never use the parking brake ever!
