Regearing Package

I have been looking at the Nitro 4.88 & 5.29 gear package. According to Nitro website I'm currently running 33" tires so I would use the 4.88. I noticed that the 5.29 gear package is cheaper than the 4.88. I have also found this other company by the name of Revolution Gear & Axle that has a 4.88 kit but you reuse the bearing for a lower cost. What would some of you guys recommend as far as to which package to buy? So for this question but a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

You dont need either for 33’s.

 

I think I’d want new bearings. But I’m not an expert.

 

But 4.88 would be fun! 5.29 is way too much for 33’s. Maybe he intends on jumping up in tire size.

 

4.88s on 33s would be a dragster!

 

I suggest keeping your money. I run 35s on my truck and pull my camper no problem. Stock gears. Now if I come on here one day and say well time for a new transmission I guess that's what I deserve but I don't think it will happen .

If you're going to spend the money on gears... you always want to spend the money on bearings/seals. It might be cheaper initially, but it could cost you twice as much in the long run.

 

Just bought 33" tires so not going up a tire size anytime soon

I had 33 and went to 295 70 18 which is little higher than 34 now I wish o would have stayed lower size due to having to re gear.....my truck definitely feels heavier and a rougher ride now I'm trying to get rid of my tires so I dont have to re gear......only thing I like about this size is the look

 

IMO I would say that re-gearing would be a waist on a 33" tire. I had 33" on my FJ and re-geared due to the V6 engine (also cause Toyota did it for free). I feel with the bigger V8, the re-gear wouldn't make sense unless you ran 34"+.

It’s just a rougher ride due to the E rating and more weight right? I will be jumping up to 33’s when my tires wear out. I know it’s not the consensus around here but I’m trying to keep the truck quick without needing a re-gear. I’m also seriously considering not even jumping up to an LT or E rated tire

 

The tow haul button will make the throttle more sensitive making it feel like the truck is quicker. It also changes the shift points so it holds a gear out for longer. There are also a few devices that can just change the throttle response without messing with the shift points. I use a bully dog and it makes the truck feel quicker without really adding much horsepower. I think it’s mostly in the throttle response.

 

Curious why you say you have to re-gear? I’m runnning 295/70/18 and re-gearing has never crossed my mind.

 

if you downsize the tires, the yodagan sticker will have to come off...

 

Im on 295/70/18 MT's and have not regeared. I think regearing for 33's is overkill especially for the price it carries - gears and install. Rather spend money on other mods

 

Bearings can easily be damaged when trying to pull them off of the differential case or pinion. It's worth buying the new bearings when you get new gears.

I'm running a 34" tire and it's been recommended that I go 5.29's. mostly because our 5th & 6th gears are both overdrive gears and 6th is a tall 0.58 I thought 4.88's but due to added mods and weight, the 5.29's would put me in a power band almost ALL the time. I'm still debating, but all the arrows are pointing towards 5.29's. and if I want I can jump up to a 35" tire and still be in the sweet spot.

 

I been on 35s and stock gears for a week. Ain't really noticed a distance. Still squal the tires when I pinch it

 

If you re-gear, your truck will still look badass, but get up and go as if it were stock... It is something that I have found to be an absolute must with any increase in tire size. I already have the quote to do the work, I just have to file my taxes first. Then it is Game On for gears!

Drive with the Tow/haul button on and enjoy your truck. Put the gears high on the "must-do" list, and when you can, do it then. (This mod took many months of waiting for me and they are still Not done yet!) So don't sweat it. Also try driving in "S" sequential shift mode. It will allow you to stay in gears longerl remain in a better powerband. I'm almost never in 5th or 6th.

 

I was quoted $3k for 4wd out the door, if they supply the gears. (Nitro). I called Nitro and they confirmed the dealer legitimacy of the shop. I've done other work with this shop and everything continues to line up in a very positive way. A good gear shop is a rare find in my neck of the woods. ( Within a 2 hour drive there are only 2 shops I would trust).

 

Did that include the gears?
