I had both Raptors (V-8 and new Eco). The first one was great. Second one was back firing at 10k and traded it in on a 18 Tundra. Wife had the similar engine in her 5 1/2 year old Explorer Sport--Engine blew at 33,300 miles (out of warranty of course). Thankfully, Toyota/Lexus worked with us and we were able to rid ourselves of the Explorer while it smoked and died on its way back to the shop's garage. The raptor was gone the next day on the Tundra. No regrets.

Man I rode in my buddies new raptor. Hands down it’s a nicer interior, doodads, faster, whatever. It was expensive. Reaaaaaaally expensive. We both said it’s probably going to break.

That being said, I will be replacing my tundra with another tundra. If mine was 4wd I would keep it till it gave up. As it is I probably will keep it a few more years. It’s paid for and it works great. Apart from the evaporator having to be replaced, nothing really major has had to be done.

Sounds to me like ford has overcomplicated their truck. All the fuel savings of a twin turbo v6 is a joke if it isnt reliable

I thought the same thing. I am skeptical about a 20% increase in HP just from a tune on a gas engine.

As a former gen1 2010 Raptor owner, and owner/operator of most popular Raptor specific forum at the time (that I have since sold)...
This. I didn't. Its just not part of the culture. When you say "full sized truck" you think big three. Toyota never comes up in conversation.

In my opinion only, I think there's a stigma. "Truck" means "American". "American" does not mean "Toyota". Obviously 30 seconds of digging completely debunks that myth, but none the less, the stigma exists.

I also think it has a lot to do with fleet sales. Look around. What are work men and women driving? They're not Tundras. So when those workers go to buy their own personal vehicles, what do they know? Where do they go?

IMHO Toyota could do itself a world of good if it actively and aggressively went after the fleet market. Take those sales away from Ford, or Chevy. It would take 20 years once they've established themselves, and probably isn't possible even still, but if they went at this from the ground up and got butts in the seats, implanting the logo in their minds, I think things would change quite a bit for Toyota in the full sized truck market.

FWIW we got 130k-ish miles out of our Raptor, with 20 or 30k of those being hard driving offroad. With one or two minor exceptions, all the issues I had with it were of my doing as a result of the beating we gave it. Only reason we sold it was because life circumstances changed and we had to move on. It was as tough as the advertising would have you believe. To the best of my knowledge the new owner is still out there beating on her like we did.

    5.jpg

We looked hard at a new Raptor when we were back in the market for a new 1/2 ton. But then the Camp Fires hit. We saw what Toyota did for Allyn. That beyond all else got us to recognize Toyota as a company we wanted to support. Then spent a ton of time here reading and learning and the decision was an easy one.

I owned a 2013 F150. There's a reason I now own a 2005 Tundra and Ford will never sell another vehicle to my family and no Ford will ever park on my property.

I personally will never buy another Ford ever. I should have learned my lesson in 1998, when I bought the odd Contour SVT. It was a European car in disguise and after design-flawed water pumps and $700 ABS unit failures, I sold that car.

But I didn't learn my lesson. Sold my ultra-reliable Scion tC (Camry 2 door heh) and bought a 2011 Taurus Limited with all the doodads and trinkets. 55K miles later, the INTERNAL water pump failed dumping coolant into the crankcase and circulated it throughout the engine. What a HORRIBLE design.

Sold it, bought a $600 Cavalier beater with 174,000 miles and then bought my Tundra. When the wife's MDX goes, she is getting a Highlander (sorry Honda). When my cavvy explodes, its either a final-model tC or 2010+ Camry SE.

Shoot, the 1998 Corolla that I bought and fixed up for my niece for $1200 is still on the road with nearly 200,000 miles, though admittedly, it has the horrible oil burning issue due to the piston drain holes not being large enough.

Still...it drives every day...you just have to add oil occasionally.

It was based on the Ford Mondeo, in the UK. Which explains everything.

Only reason I got it was I had my Acura Integra GS-R and my Honda Civic Si stolen. Decided to go domestic so people would stop stealing my cars. Bad choice.

Long time ago i had an integra. Was just a base model but it was still really nice. Eventually sold it to a good friend up in Maryland and i still feel pretty bad about it.

Now the car was in great shape and all but within a year it had been stolen from him 4 times... Lol.. The fourth time it was found on blocks in Northeast D.C. basically stripped..

Thinking back, i had to sell it so i could buy a '99 f150.. Lol. Dealer wouldn't take the Acura as a trade in because it was worth more than the ford. Lol..

just always seems when they do a review on the tundra they always bag on it which is bullshit. tundra is outdated yes but you don't need all the fucking bells ans whistles in a pick up truck. i mean its a pick up truck FFS not a benz or a bmw

Good deal. I was strictly speaking from an image perspective. Case on point: I've already had to "explain" myself to my "American" truck owner friends. It didn't take long to shut them up, so again the reality is quite different than the perception. But its that perception that is the problem and what I think keeps some from seriously checking into the Tundra. To their detriment, for sure.

I hate to break the bad news but Toyota isn't perfect. Look at the Cam Tower thread. Toyota barely admits there is a problem. Look at the frame recalls.

I'm a huge fan of Toyota but I also think Ford makes a pretty good truck. There is a reason they outsell every other pickup.

Bingo. My Tundra hasn't been that great compared to all of my other vehicles. I have owned around 17 vehicles. Only 2 of them have given me more issues than my Tundra. Most of my other vehicles, including several Fords, have performed better from a reliability standpoint.

Not saying I would ever buy a Craptor, though. Overpriced bullshit.

I'm sure there are plenty of F150's on the road that are reliable, it just seems that the odds are in Toyota's favor in terms of reliability. I know Toyota isn't perfect, my 16 Tacoma was in the shop 5 times for unscheduled maintenance in the 2 years I owned it.

I dont think any of us would say our tundras where/are perfect when being serious, but as you pointed out the two (as far as ive seen) major issues that did effect a large portion of tundra owners in comparison to the f150's, we get a little leeway when boasting.

I think they could have a damn reliable truck if they would just stop trying to completely redesign a platform instead of fixing the platforms that they are only a couple years into.

Well, I think Tacoma's sales are still very high, so I don't know. I do know that when I traded in my 2016, I had a friend with a 2015 (last year of the Gen 2) with similar mileage, and his resale was higher than mine was. I still got a pretty penny for my Taco on the trade in, but they have to know something's up.
