Probably not much a surprise to those that know me here.......

Well guys n gals, I just decided. The pitbull rockers are no longer for sale. I just pulled the trigger on a pair of relentless fab bmc cover plates, the coach builder 4 bumper shims pack, and last but not least 5 method the new 313 wheels in matte black. Now the wait begins to get it all and get it installed shortly after receiving it all. I'm excited and broke now.

So after living with it for about a year, I braved the cold today and replaced my hood bulge that I've had for about a month or so. It had a scratch from my sons trampoline blowing on it. Some of you might recall my venting story lol. Since the service center put another scratch in my door I told them I would trade scratches with them. Since they gave me a scratch they would have to take 1 away. I wasn't able to feel my fingers while swapping them but was very happy to see they matched perfect. If anyone is interested in a MGM hood bulge I'll be posting in for sale thread shortly.


Heres the old. Besides the scratch it's in pretty good shape. I'll put full disclosures in sale thread. As you can tell from further away or when it's not in direct sunlight you almost can't even tell it's there. Hint it's on the top upper right of the bulge. Bout halfway between middle and end.

Here's closeup of scratch. I put touch up on it but seems like the touch up they gave me was a tad lighter. On the truck it's not even something most people notice. Unfortunately my OCD doesn't allow me to be like most people so it was the 1st thing my eyes went to. Since it lined up with the scratch on hood it bothered me even more. After the pic I cleaned it up real nice and it's boxed ready to ship.

Heres the bit it lined up with. I'm guessing most people wouldn't even notice or bother. It killed me at 1st, but I got over it to the point I was just gonna keep the scar, since, even for me it wasn't too bad. But, since I had an opportunity to replace it for free, I took it. Otherwise, even with OCD, it would've just stayed this way.


But now, it's time to drop it off again to get that bulge coated to match the truck. Since the place I took it to are such awesome people, they are going to for free do the bulge and touch up the area on the door where the service center scratched.

I got really lucky on the replacement bulge. Here you can see with the flash on how the color of the bulge matches perfect to the rest of the truck. Notice how the areas where the flash directly hits match perfect, and the areas where the flash doesn't bounce right off appearing lighter also match in darker areas. It literally is spot on in matching the rest of the surround and to the rest of the truck. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Except of course when I have those areas touched up and/or coated for free, that will probably even make me more happy.

Yes it was, see, I knew people would remember, how could anyone forget that right? Despite my initial rage, I knew everyone would get a kick out of it, I just had to share it. Lol

Yup. Gonna do everything 1 shot. Already got the relentless bmc plates. Spoke with Dave Elkstrom last night. Said hes expecting the upgraded hardened hardware for bumper shims any day now, that plus his truck bumper is already taken apart waiting on some other stuff. So soon as he gets it he's gonna test it out to see what kind of difference we're looking at. It's then that he'll find out and let me know if I'll be able to get use out of both bumper shims with the sso bumper. Im really hoping I can use the shims so I won't have to cut the shit out the bumper ends and liners. Living in NJ, salting and brine eat shit up. I much rather keep it out if I can. Assuming all goes well, just gotta wait to get that and good to go. Probably gonna take the wheels over to be artic coated in the meantime while I wait for Dave's goodies.

I usually do all my mods myself. But since I have a place I trust to do the work and need mounting, balancing, and alignment, thinking I might just drop it off, go to work, and hopefully pick it up all done. Plus I'm not a welder so there's another reason to have my shop do it. I already installed the bumper once myself, thinking since they doing all the rest, might as well tackle that too.

 

also the same way bro.... Do the truck mods myself (everything on my truck was installed by me except alignment, mounting & balancing the tires). Kinda hard to have someone do it and if the shit hits the fan you are screwed especially on the trail......

Ain't that the truth. I've already lost hours trying to decide and researching wheels, tires, ect that will work with my specific setup. Things like my CB steer kit, rim offset, sso bumper, body mount, flares, ect all come into play. Even take the clearance issues out, then there is weights of tires,wheels, and bumper what that does to my lift and driving ability. Then of course there's looks too. What works best doesn't always look best and vice versa. I always try to go with function over looks, so for me, this is really pushing it. I'd be lying if I said looks didn't matter in my decisions to do all this.

I'm pretty OCD on shit, so once I get on something I obsess over it until it's done. I'm trying not to stress until the day it all attempts to come together. That's gonna be the hardest. Dropping my truck off and not really knowing how things are going or turning out until I pick it up. It should be a good happy day. Unfortunately that's just not me. I'll be really bugging out hard all day and probably the days leading up to the day it hopefully all comes together.

I tried to think of everything and overcome any and all obstacles I could in pulling this off. There's just 1 big problem, despite all my research, I wasn't able to find even just 1 person who's done exactly what I'm attempting. So unfortunately I'm not going to know for sure if this can be done and functional up to my standards until the day it's actually done. Truth be told, the actual size of the tires with a zero offset is scaring the shit out me.

 

I hope so brother nothing I can do more at this point but hope and pray. In way too deep to back out now.

 

Alright guys. I know a lot of people were wondering this so I'll try my best to explain. My issue is trying to run Dave's coachbuilders bumper shim kit with my new tire/wheel combo so I dont have to cut the shit out bumper and gives room for compression off road. The problem being I already have and love the sso bumper.

So even with the upgraded hardened hardware, with Daves testing I would only be able to get 1 of his shims on there with everything fully threaded as is. So this left me a couple options. I could scratch the bumper shims all together and just cut cut cut. Or I could run just 1 shim and he would refund me half the cost since only getting the use out 1. I had the mindset, if I'm going to go through the pain of taking everything apart I wanted to get both shims for the full half inch extra clearance or nothing. This leads me to option 3 and the option I decided to go with.

With help from both Dave and Kevin the owner of SSO, we figured out a way to still get use out both bumper shims. It was Kevin who actually suggested this route since he had experience doing just this on his Lexus bumper applications. Dave's brilliance came with supplying the numbers and hardware for the install along with his bumper shims.

It's hard to see in pic, but u can see the OEM threaded studs. This is where the sso bumper gets mounted. Their backing plate slides through the threaded bolts with some washers and nuts. I'm hoping u can see, make out, and understand the idea of how it mounts.


Dave took measurements based on sharing info with me and Kevin and will be supplying me not only with his bumper shims and hardened hardware but also with grade 8 threaded bolts and washers to complete the install. The hardened hardware we were initially planning to use plus hes sending me everything needed for the install except for nulylon nuts which I'll pick up at home cheapo.

The big difference in my installation is going to be done on the bolts in the pic. We're going to remove the factory threaded bolts, I'm guessing perhaps with a cut wheel, torch, and or grinder. After removing those studs, I'm going to replace them with grade 8, 2" in length. So we know there's 7/8" of added material with bumper flange and 2 shims. A 3/8"x2" grade 8 bolt will work.

So to recap and try to sum it up, making a long story short. I'm going to remove the factory OEM thresded bolts, knock them out, and weld in the grade 8, 2 inch by 3/8. After those are replaced and welded in the exact location of original OEM 3/8 but shorter in length studs, I'll be able to install both of Dave's bumper shims just like anyone could just as if I didn't have the sso bumper to contend with.

Hopefully that answers all questions for everyone and it's not too confusing to understand. If you're interested and still confused or have anymore questions, or want me to clarify further, I'll do my best. I know a lot of people were asking and wanted to know what happened or what I'm going to do regarding the above scenario.

Hopefully my description above answers those questions and provides a solution to anyone with the sso bumper or any other aftermarket bumper that mounts there and wants to be able to use coach builders bumper shim kit.

Hopefully the fact I'm running on about 3 hours sleep combined for the past 2 days doesn't jumble my thoughts too much or make it impossible for anyone interested to understand what I'm trying to explain. Forgive me, I'm exhausted. I kept getting asked by a good size group of people and didn't want to leave anyone hanging thats interested in knowing or possibly applying this solution themselves. As always I'll update the thread and let everyone know how the plan comes to life. I'm hoping this resolves my issue, and possibly other peoples as well. Whether it will, cant say yet, but in theory, this should work and accomplish exactly what I'm trying to do here.

Thank u sir. Correct. Unless you only needed or wanted 1 bumper shim. If that was the case, then you could keep the factory studs the length they are, paired with Dave's hardened hardware and still get use out of 1 of his shims without any further modifications. Now if u feel the need to get use out of both shims like I do then u will need to do what I'm doing.

Hey Dan, besides the info I provided above to answer ur question about the shims. They do not change at all. You will just cut out the old threaded bolts and weld in longer ones so both shims can be used.

 

Since I'm only waiting for bumper shims which should be here any day. I made appt for install rims n tires. Only problem hes booked til not this Thursday but next. So I gotta wait 13 more days n counting. Knowing me I might just pull the bumper when I get the shims. Maybe, then again i don't even know if I'll need it and don't want to do all that for nothing. Rims got artic coated today. I'll pick up those on Monday. Now the wait which patience is not 1 of my virtues.

 

Ohh ohhh. Maybe another temptation. Actually if I remember correctly, you have ceramic coating already? That's what it is. If u Google it u will see they're based out of like Sweden or somewhere cold, like me in NJ winter. The same 2 guys who started the company ceramic pro, didn't like the direction the business was going, something about selling bullshit warranties like it lasts forever and prevents scratching ect. They broke off, sold the company and started artic coating. Also, if I remember correctly, the place I get it done is like only 1 of 2 or 3 places, if that, in the whole United states that is authorized to apply. The place I go can apply any other coating I want. They're authorized to do them all, but I have a great relationship with the owner Anthony from APC, auto polishing center in waldwick nj. He feels for the money, u cant get better for our conditions. He uses the same on his own vehicles, family, and close friends. So far I love it. Makes a huge difference. U can Google or look on Facebook and see his shop apc. That and the same for artic coating to see what they both are all about with results.

How is the bumper finish holding up with the north winter road salt? Any signs of pitting or rust yet? If I decide to add this bumper I may have it rhino lined. Rust is a killer.

 

That was something I was definitely nervous about. Tell u what though, nothing to worry about. It still looks great. I don't see any rust. It still looks almost like the day I got it.

 

Yeah I figured since my whole truck had the coating, I might as well do the wheels too. This will keep them in great shape and easy to clean.

 

Got another piece of the puzzle delivered today. Not bad, from the time Dave, Kevin, and I think we figured it out, Dave's goodies sent to me on Thursday and in my hands on Saturday. Here's his bumper shim kit and the hardened grade 8 hardware. Hopefully with a little further modification I'll be able to get use out of both .25" shims on each side, for a total of 1/2 inch additional bumper end clearance. I'm hoping with this addition, I'll either not need to cut the bumper ends and liners at all, or if still needed due to suspension compression it'll be minimal cutting needed.

Again, nothing too crazy, another small, but significant piece of the puzzle. With this addition, I'm hoping it won't be too long from here to put it all together.


Only thing still needed is I gotta go to home cheapo and get some 3/8 nylon nuts. That and pick up my wheels from getting Artic Coated Thursday night.

 

Looks great! I painted my calipers on my car with g2. It's been on my car for 3+ yrs and it still looks the same today, like the day I painted them. Did you need to buy 2 kits from g2 since the calipers are bigger on the Tundra than a car?

 

No I put at least 2 coats on each and still had more leftover. So 1 kit is more than enough. I did not take them off the truck though. Just took off wheels and tires so I could paint what I could get to. Perhaps if I painted backsides there would just be enough?

 

Picked up my new wheels from getting artic coated last night. Now that I amassed all my parts for the install, I got 1 more week til it all goes on. Planning to mount, balance, align, install bumper shims after replacing the OEM studs with 3/8 by 2" grade 8 and bmc on Thursday next week. Cant wait. If I pull this off the way I planned and am hoping it turns out, I think it's going to be pretty amazing. If nothing else, it'll be a 1st anyone's ever attempted on a Tundra and it's either going to work and come out perfect, or fail and answer a bunch of questions I had and I'm sure others had or will have too.
