The head-unit in my 2018 constantly reboots when I make phone calls. I've seen threads on this topic in the past but rarely to resolution... It seems to be worse when I've got Google maps or Spotify working on my phone and communicating via Bluetooth. I have an iPhone X with latest iOS. System/Entune completely reboot and I lose all of my "soft" settings (e.g., orientation of the navigation, sound settings, etc.). It's quite frustrating and the dealer so far has had no solution. It has become so regular that I can re-create the crash on demand...

If I had to guess, it really seems like the RAM is overloading on the head-unit itself. I know Toyota loves to blame iOS and such but that just doesn't seem acceptable in a $50k truck, especially when the competitors put our trucks to shame on the tech front. I've tried erasing and reinstalling, removing the Entune app on my phone, not syncing contacts, etc.--basically every recommended fix out there.

I'm open to ideas. I'm sure I could push the dealer to replace the h/u under warranty but I doubt that really resolves the issue. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks!

    Lost track after #1.
    Stop buying Crapple products.

... j/k. ... not really. But I saw a thread a while back where people were updating the Entune software to get them to play nicely together.

My law firm provides the phone--Android isn't secure enough--so that's not gonna change. I've updated to latest Entune to no avail.

I never had this issue until the day I got an Apple Watch. Now I have it constantly. My watch broke and I had to send it to Apple. The week I didn’t have my watch I had no issues. I’m convinced it’s something with the watch paired to the phone and the car paired to the phone too. Do you have an Apple Watch paired with your phone?

I have a apple watch and iphone x and my head unit never reboots and never has. Have you tried seeing if your head unit needs a software update or just taking it to dealer?

All software is up to date on mine. It doesn’t reboot every time I get a call but it does only do it when I have my Apple Watch on. Was just st the dealer and totally forgot to ask them about this. Need to set a reminder to ask them next time I’m there. I have the 1gen Apple Watch. Not sure if that matters or not. It also only reboots when I make a call out. All incoming calls work fine.

Yes, I do have an Apple Watch... I had the Series 2 and now the Series 4 and no difference there... To the folks saying talk to the dealer--I've done that a few times now (at least 3) and have not found much help there. Granted, I haven't really strong-armed the issue with them but I'm getting to that point. Rarely an issue with incoming calls. More of an issue when I make outgoing. Head unit will cut off and begin rebooting and the call with just transfer to my phone (which is usually in my pocket still). It gets really annoying when I'm cruising on the highway...

    Function before sparkle.
I have a similar challenge with reboots but it's very specific: when I use steering wheel controls to activate Siri while listening to bluetooth audio. Usually it works the first time but the second it forces the headunit to reboot. If I activate Siri via the phone I never have the problem.

    No fix for me.

Went through this over and over with mine. Had all the updates done to HU, dealer even tried replacing it twice. Nothing seemed to work, and then....BOOM! Found the solution! My kenwood HU has worked flawlessly so far

This happens on my 18 Tundra and my fiancés 18 Highlander. It is 120% due to the Apple Watch. So for a week every other day we both would wear the watch. The days we had the watch on it would do the reboot crap the other days with no watch we had zero issues. I too can recreate the problem on demand. I have no clue why this happens maybe because its two devices trying to communicate at once. I just deal with it as Im not going to stop wearing my watch.

I was told same thing. When I put it (watch) on airplane mode the issue quit. Hopped in my wife’s 2019 highlander one day, made a call, HU reset. It’s never done it to her once

Mine happens with just iPhone. No watch. Call to dealer: need it for 4 hours plus 4 for SRS(?) recall.

Figure out stereo THEN after I know it’s fixed you can get your recall $$

My truck did this when I was using an iPhone 8 Plus and Apple Watch series 3. I recently upgraded my phone to a Xs Max (still using the same watch) and have not had a reset since.

Mine has done it to me 3 times and I'm Android. The only thing I have in common with OP is outgoing calls with Spotify running in the background. Seems like the issue started once I went from Pandora to Spotify.

FWIW I'm seeing signs it's the Apple Watch as well - perhaps only older ones. My old 2016 Highlander would experience a reboot maybe once every 2-3 months - not much. BUT - in March, I leased a 2019 Highlander - same model, etc - coincidentally the same week I picked up a used Apple Watch (series 2) for running. Since the 2016 and 2019 are basically identical, I was surprised to notice Entune rebooting every 2-3 times I'd use Siri (most often to call, change music, or reply to a text message with Siri). Very reproducible. Been that way for 6 months - I just wrote it off to the new Highlander.
Then, I happened to read this post last week just before I was about to start a 3 hour trip (each way) to spend a weekend away. 10 minutes into the trip, with my watch was in my bag next to me, I used siri and Entune rebooted. I reached over, put the watch in airplane mode, and started stress-testing siri on my drive :) I asked questions about the weather and my destinaion, I changed songs at least 10 times. I texted at least a dozen times. I could not reproduce a reboot. I left the watch in airplane mode all weekend and didn't use it while driving or on the rest of the trip. Have not had a problem since. Perhaps it's a limitation of the older apple watch (processor speed, bluetooth chip, who knows). It's still anecdotal, but I was reliably able to reproduce the issue before, and I haven't been able to since disabling the Apple watch.

My truck was doing the same thing. My wife has an Apple Watch and that didn’t seem to help either LOL. I took it to the dealer and had them re-flashed the head unit. Or update whatever you wanna call it. My service advisor worked it so that I got it under warranty. Said there was some wires disconnected or loose. Then performed an update. I have ten year platinum warranty so I feel it should’ve been covered. Maybe he was just trying to make himself look good.

Either way I have not had the stereo reboot since they fixed it.

This started in my 2016 Highlander on Saturday. After no reboots in 3 years it now reboots every 60 seconds while my iPhone is connected. If I turn off Bluetooth on my iPhone, no rebooting. Called Toyota and they said to take it for an update. I’ve got an appointment on Friday and sure hope it works! Also, I don’t have an Apple Watch.

No sure about the Highlander, but on the Tundra you can download and install the update yourself using a USB drive if you want to avoid a trip to the dealer.

Thank you for the tip!! I installed the Entune app and that prompted my car to update the Entune software in the car. But it didn't help. Still rebooting every 60 seconds if phone is connected. :-( I sure hope the dealer can figure it out!

I have a 2019 trd sport and an iPhone 8 Plus. Before the latest iOS update my phone and HU were jiving nicely. Then I updated to iOS 13.1.0 and that’s when it started. I’ve had the truck since June and my phone worked flawlessly until the iOS update. I have it narrowed down to my phone because I connected my wife’s and daughters phone and they worked fine with no reboots. Then I connect mine and it reboots every min. I called Apple and they suggested resetting my phone to new with iTunes. I haven’t done it yet only because it’s gonna delete everything but not as long as I back it up on iTunes. I’m not tech savvy. I took it to the dealer and they did an update but it still reboots. The dealer suggested resetting my phone to factory setting and then they might think about replacing the head unit. I’ve done the resetting part and it still reboots. I’m gonna have to bring it to the dealer and show them again and see if switching the HU will fix it. It’s getting really frustrating and a new aftermarket HU isn’t cheap. Although I feel I’m headed that way which is sad for Toyota. Why can’t stuff just work?

I guess misery really does love company, because I am so relieved to hear someone else having the exact same problem. But also sad for you - it isn't fun! I had about 2-3 days where everything was working fine, even though I hadn't changed anything that led me to believe it would fix it. It was just long enough for me to cancel the appointment with the dealer! Now it's rebooting again. i installed the 13.13 update last night, but no help.
One update made in ios 13 was to the Bluetooth sharing. I've turned off sharing for all apps and will see if that helps next time I'm in the car. Sure hope this can get figured out without a four-figure repair!

Me too. I understand if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. But this is definitely broke. I honestly don’t understand what it’s going to take for a fix to finally be made. I wish it comes soon if there is one.

Okay, I have something for you to try. On your iPhone go to Settings - Privacy - Bluetooth. Click “off” for all apps listed and see if that helps. My car hasnt rebooted in 50 minutes (three different trips)! Hope it helps!

I’ll give that a try. I usually listen to pandora in my truck which is the only reason why I connect to Bluetooth. That won’t disable the ability for me to use the app will it?
