SR5 Payload shocker

I was looking at a 2016 SR5 double cab, 4x4, and a 38gal tank. From the Toyota.com site they state the payload around 1500-1600. When I looked at the door jam of the new SR5 the payload stated was 1300. Does that sound correct. To me that is a little low for a truck competing in the 1500/150 class of trucks.

Is this because of the shortened beds? Too much weight could offset the weight distribution?

 

Next to the SR5 was a Limited Double cab TRD Off road rated at 1295. I guess the extra weight is from the leather seats and a couple of extra knobs and buttons on the radio.
I am looking for a new truck as I scrapped my 98 Ram 2500 a couple weeks (August 8, 2016 3:12PM) ago so I finalized my search to two manufactures and Toyota is one of them. You get some nice features in the SR5 without breaking the bank but the payload - man that might be a deal breaker. Was hoping that the SR5 was rated at the 1500 because that would handle all my needs. Time to do some soul searching and determine does 200lbs really matter.

 

What are you going to use this truck for?

 

A few years ago i bought a widebelt sander for my woodshop. Got an awesome deal on it and the guy delivered it to my shop in wichita KS from St. Louis Missouri in his double cab Tundra. The sander weighs 1650 lbs. and he said he did not have any problems and drove nicely. Powermatic WB25 if anyone wants to look it up.

 

That's one big sander.

 

What am I going to use it for? Towing a mustang once or twice a year. Under 7000lbs with car and trailer. Camping - pulling a TT with a GVWR of 4000lbs and tongue weight of ~ 300.
Most of the time sitting in the driveway.

 

Any particular reason to get the extended warranty. Can you elaborate on mixed results. Are your mix results about hauling or reliability?

The extended warranty is a nessary had a timing chain go bad, on my 2015, it just ensures to get those quirks out of the truck, then it will last

 

The trucks come with a 100k mile power train warranty, and Toyota upped the warranty on the AIP to 100k too I believe. Beyond that, I would not pay what the dealer wants for the "platinum" warranty with oil changes. Those are wicked overpriced, and you'll be more than fine with the warranty the truck comes with.

 

Our Tundra came with the lifetime limited power-train warranty from the dealer for the original owner as long as we maintain the vehicle as per Toyota's recommendations with all maintenance records. Did not buy an extended warranty.

Just returned from our first camping trip with the Tundra/travel trailer rig and really like this pickup towing a 4950 pound travel trailer with 450 pound tongue weight. Had two people and 75 pounds of gear in the back seat area with seats folded up. The bed was empty on this trip. We could load an additional 505 pounds of stuff, according to the Tundra 7100 pound GVWR.

Our Tundra also came with the free lifetime/unlimited mile power-train warranty. The only stipulation with ours is that the maintenance has to be done by a Toyota dealership. All of the new Toyotas at our local dealerships are covered by this warranty (even for the people who lease and then buy them out.) I think the dealerships use this as a marketing tool because they expect most buyers will trade in the vehicles before they need major repairs. Plus, they get the money from the service visits. Either way, I like knowing it's covered for as long as I own the vehicle.

If my vehicle didn't come with this warranty, I wouldn't have purchased an extended warranty. Yeah, some people will use the warranty and get their money's worth, but for the most part they're a rip off.

 

Just bought my 13 and it came with 7/100 power train warranty, and 12mo/12k mile bumper to bumper. Included. As in I didn't pay more to purchase separately. Sticker was 33500, I paid 30500.

Of course the finance guy tried to sell me the platinum toyotacare, bumper to bumper up to 120k, but I declined, it's nowhere near worth the price they wanted. Even you, who seems to disagree with everyone about everything would have agreed it wasn't worth it based on what was included for no extra $...

I understand your skepticism, as I would be too, but I have a lot of experience with the vehicle purchasing process. The warranty has nothing to do with the finance department or even the sales price. It's a standard warranty on ALL new vehicles. I LEFT the dealership paying 4-5K under MSRP on a SR5. There were no warranty prices tacked on. It's a marketing tool and it ensures the dealership gets service money from the customers.

 

A dealership* gets money from service... You don't have to go to the exact one you bought it from...

 

I agree. I plan to keep it for awhile and pass it to my 12 y/o son at some point, but told him the title has to stay in my name. We'll see how that goes.

Yeah, I shopped around and purchased two new vehicles in COS in 2013 and none of the dealerships around there had a similar program. The finance departments sure tried to sell the warranties there though.
