3rd gen Taco was just a repackaged 2nd gen, they haven't changed the platform yet. I'm surprised it sells as well as it does. We will see how it does with the new additions to the midsize market.

Next gen Tundra I think they are at a point that the platform needs to be changed, this is the only way they are going to improve payload, towing capacities, strength, weight etc. If they just give us the same platform reworked they are going to fall way behind the competition.

I had a 2006 Tacoma and a 2017 Tacoma. Other than looks, there is no way the 3rd gen was an improvement. It was a joke! Cost me a bundle to get out of that pig.

Not to me too the higher initial cost. Also refineries are set up to only make so much diesel. Diesel prices are higher because of demand.

We're still a long ways off from having true hybrid powerplants in 4x4's and trucks. FCA's little e-torque venture with the 1500 isn't a true hybrid, despite being marketed as such. Also, its real-world mpg isn't that great according to at least one TFL test.

I think a diesel Tundra is definitely possible, at least as an alternative engine to their gasoline offerings. A 3rd party OEM (Hino, Cummins) could easily make an engine emissions-compliant for Toyota. Heck, Toyota's overseas diesels are starting to incorporate much of the same emissions controls that are required here (DPF, EGR).

Is it going to get 30 mpg? No, but mid to low 20's is definitely feasible given the progress that has been made with diesel engine designs. That's nothing ground-breaking, but still an improvement over what most gasoline engines currently offer for trucks. Fuel prices fluctuate depending on region and time of year. What might "make sense" for someone in Texas or Alaska, may not necessarily "make sense" for someone in Illinois. Plus, for people who tow or haul a lot of gear, the diesel engine's performance is often times more important than any longterm cost savings.

The problem is low 20's is possible with a gas engine right now with the power that the Tundra currently has. Around here gas is $2 a gallon, diesel is over $3 and has been much more expensive for the past couple of years so in order for a diesel to be worth while in a half ton truck, it would have to get mid 30's for it to pay off.

I know that. But I do believe that Hino still makes its own engines, instead of just relying on Toyota's diesel designs. In fact, when Toyota was last toying with putting a diesel in the Tundra (back around 2008), it was a Hino inline 6 which was being used for the concept.

A few gasoline 1/2 tons (namely the F-150 ecoboosts) are rated for low 20's; in real-world driving conditions, they're getting quite a bit below those ratings. Gasoline engines quickly lose their efficiency when they are put under any sort of load (which is inevitable in realistic driving conditions). OEM's will continue to focus on alternative engine designs (hybrid, diesel, EV, hydrogen fuel cell) because there is only so much efficiency that can be wrung out of the gasoline engine.

For most places in North America, the difference between gasoline and diesel is not $1. I realize though that not everyone wants or needs a diesel. That's why Toyota should at least offer the option of one, just like the other OEM's are doing.

And FYI, unless you're hauling loads across the country or racking up +15k miles annually, a diesel won't pay for itself in the short term. But diesel does offer performance advantages (better torque and range), and a lot of people are willing to pay a bit extra for those advantages. Similar principle for the F-150 owners who opt for the 3.5l ecoboost over the 2.7l ecoboost or 5.0l v8; they're unlikely to see a payoff, but many still choose the former option due to its performance. Unlike the ecoboost, the diesels, at least the well-made ones, do hold their value very well.

Based on the sequoia getting a re-design, I'd imagine the tundra is next. I agree that the 1/2 ton diesel is not worth the hassle. The Eco-diesel ram is available, but after the increased fuel cost, DEF fluid, and added maintenance, (fuel filters, more oil, etc...) the diesel doesn't pay back. Not to mention the techs at the dealership aren't tooled or trained for diesels. It has been a pretty big S%^& show for Nissan.

The 2.7l eb is on their entry vehicle. With Ford's packaging methods, you cannot specify the towing package or optional interior package or .... With the 2.7l eb. If you get into the F150 details, the bottom line F150 is rated for 5000 lbs towing. Well, that was the way when I was looking a year ago.

With the F150 packaging schemes, you end up with a truck MSRP OF 55-65K easy. I ended up with a Tundra Limited CM, and happy with it's options. I like the Tundra 5.7l. If I was buying a Ford, I'd go with the 5.0l. But, my friend has a F150 with the 5.0l, he says it's not good for towing.... Good in a mustang but not a truck in his opinion.

Diesel prices are high because there are too few refineries producing it and so there is a monopoly in effect. Diesel vehicles cost twice as much to own and operate but the cost is to the customers and not to the auto manufacturers who get better CAFE numbers. What is worse is that diesel engines are terrible for short trips as they do not reach proper operating temperatures for more than 20 minutes and they produce 10x as much pollution that damages people's lungs. More than $12 billion spent on hospital admissions costs for asthma and this is the tip of the diesel iceberg in terms of the cost of the air pollution.

If someone needs to tow more than 10,000 lbs on a regular basis then a diesel engine is worth using for a number of reasons.

I am waiting for the 2020 Tundras to buy a new pickup but if nothing is announced by June then it will be a matter of deciding between Ford and Ram to get a new and improved truck.
