Change tail light bulb

I needed to change my tail light bulb I removed the 2 torque screws but I can't get the light to come out what am I missing I didn't want to pull too much afraid of breaking something any help would be awesome it's a 2014 if that helps. Thanks

 

On my 2nd gen you have to twist the base and then it will pop right out. Should be the same for you.

Do you mean you can't get the whole tail light off the truck? After you remove the torque screws, there are two push pins at the top and bottom on the other side that you have to pop out. Here is a photo that someone had shared with me.

At the locations where the tape is, you'll need to use a plastic trim tool, or be very careful with a flathead screwdriver:

So where the tape is you have marked the pins are visible once you have the screws out and push in on them

Resurrecting this old thread now that I’m struggling with the same thing. Need to replace the rear turn signal bulb, so I searched for videos showing how to take the tail light assembly off. Of course, the few I found show it easily coming off. As is typical with my luck, though, mine is stubbornly stuck. Guess I need to get a plastic pry tool and try to pop it out without scratching the paint.

 

I’ve removed mine quite a few times. They’re still stubborn. After taking out the screws, get your fingers under the front of the light, and pull straight out to the side of the truck. I use my knuckles against the body of the truck as leverage.

Well, the finger knuckle option didn't work, so I had to use a plastic auto body pry tool. I didn't have blue painters tape handy, so I used a chamois, which kept me from scratching the paint. But that tail light housing was on so tight, the top red corner piece (right where the top blue painters tape is in the pic above), snapped off before I was able to finally pop it out. A little bummed about that, but live and learn I guess.

 

I push from the tailgate side of the tail light out.

 

Yeah, I tried that, too, as tight as it was to get my hand in there, but it just would't budge. It was on there real good.

Man, I wish I would’ve thought about putting some grease on those pins. I’ll be sure to do that the next time. I didn’t bother with the passenger side because the bulbs are still good. Hope it’s not on there as tight as the driver side when it’s time to replace a bulb.

 

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago, a simple $20. LED reverse bulb swap ended up costing me $150.+ For a new taillight. That pretty much sucked.

It’s an Action Crash brand. I’m leery going with a non-Toyota part, though. Wonder if I’ll have issues with fitment.

 

Non original manufacturer parts are cheap for a reason. They don't have to adhere to the manufacturers design or durability requirements. Typically you get what you pay for. I'm guessing it will fit or everyone would return them immediately. My guess the seal between the plastic pieces will fail in a couple of years and the light will flood. Burn out a bulb, maybe get corrosion to start on plugs, and then break when you go to get the water out and replace the bulb . By then any warranty is done and you will be SOL. But for what you paid for it you then can buy another one.

 

Good point on the seals, flooding and corrosion. Hadn’t thought about that.

 

Toyota of Cool Springs, there price isn’t to bad but I sure got hammered on shipping. Living in the boonies doesn’t always have it’s advantages.

 

Good to know...my 2015 has a light bulb contact problem. Blinkers click quickly when it the light is deemed as burnt out. I just bang on the lens with my first and starts working again. Dealer says they fixed it, my guess they didn't do shit!

 

just pulled the tail light off my 2014 tundra...what a Pain!!! I thought for sure i was going to brake the lens or something expensive. anyway i did brake the plastic insert for the top pin. is there anyplace online i can buy new inserts? TIA
