My truck has 204,000 miles. Rear brakes have never been done. I am about to do them this weekend. I will search a you tube video on it. Is there anything specific that I should know from people that have done this before?

Drums or rotors? Either way might as well replace everything if they’ve never been done. Also I’m sure it’s time for a fluid exchange/flush.

Buy lots of brake cleaner and a mask. Wear gloves. Don’t breathe in the brake dust that’s in the drums. Did you buy new hardware or just shoes and drum? Might want to buy a wheel cylinder or two just in case.

Planning on buying all NEW parts. I know about the bad dust. Done lots of brakes before, but haven't done drums in ages. Just watched a video. Going out for the parts now. Appreciate all advice. Hopefully Ill get to timing belt next week.

Does someone make a parts kit for the drums or is everything purchased individually?

You may want to have new bell cranks on hand in case you need them too.

i cant remember how much. go to the website and check it all out. i purchased the caliper brakets/hardware only, without the parking brake provision. i purchased power stop upgraded calipers, disk pads and drilled/slotted rotors.from summit racing.you can call s.o.s performance and talk to them about your options

All done. Should have taken a pic before I closed them. The brake best hardware kit was a waste. Most parts didn’t fit. Just need to adjust them tommrow.image.jpg

Did you end up reusing the existing hardware? How is your parking brake operation?

The only new hardware that I was able to use were the long springs and the locking clips. other parts didn't match. I still need to adjust the shoes this morning and toss the wheels back on. Everything that was reused was cleaned and checked. I will let you know about the parking brake when I test it.

So I adjusted the shoes. parking brake doesn't work, it never really worked before. It looks like I need to adjust the parking brake cable still.

Are the bell cranks moving freely and are the secondary cables inside the drums in good shape?

Brakes weren't adjusted properly. I adjusted them again. Parking brake works fine now.
