Exhaust "Tick"

Anyone had issues with the stock 1st gen exhaust manifolds? Mine developed a "tick" when cold which is most likely a small crack or slightly warped flange. From what I understand, swapping out the manifolds is a real PITA on 1st gens so I have simply ignored it for about 2 years (goes away when she warms up).

 

You sure its not the gasket gone bad?

 

Not sure what it is....it started a couple years back...local mechanic said Tundras had issues with the exhaust manifold cracking. Hasn't gotten any worse and still passes smog so I've sort of ignored it as it goes away when warmed up. Can't really get to a spot to look at it as the 4.7 is crammed in pretty tight in the 1st gen and there is tin shrouding around it all. Just thought I'd see if anyone has had a sim issue...

 

I have the 4.7 with 144 on the clock no leaks at all yet. Toyota is not the best at manifolds.

 

I have the cold tick at 135k. Something to do with exhaust manifold (crack or bad gasket?). Heard it was a common thing. Doesn't seem to impact performance or mpg though.

 

I have heard that the tube type manifolds get cracks. Mine has the tick on the drivers side...been there for a few years and still passes smog etc. Haven't changed it as they are a PITA to change out on the early Tundras.

When you get ready to do your next 90k service replace the manifolds at the same time. My manifolds came out in 2 pieces when they went to change the gaskets. 102k at the time.

 

My 2000 ticks for a little while until the headers get hot, then sounds normal. I figure I'll just run them until it gets worse then throw a new performance set on.

 

I have heard good things about these replacement manifolds. Way cheaper than OEM, like Amazon for 165.00

Reading through this thread I'm glad I'm not the only one that has the tick until the engine warms up. It's annoying.

Has anyone gone put headers on their 4.7L?

 

A few have but I’ve read that they are a bitch to install. LT headers and exhaust from @dirtydeeds is on my list.

 

Whatever the lifetime warranty stuff advance auto sells.

New exhaust and gaskets cleared that tick right up

 

My '02 had a tick, I replaced the stock manifolds with JBA short tubes.
I haven't heard a tick since then... that was 130k+ miles ago.

I used OEM gaskets.

 

Did you install them yourself? If so, how difficult was it?

 

I had an 01 Sequioa with ~250k miles and had the tick that started at ~120k miles and went away when it warmed up. FWIW - multiple local mechanics indicated that if it were their truck, they wouldn't do anything about it.

 

Dealer installed.

 

Manifolds are relatively inexpensive, installation is a PITA due to limited access. Mine has had the tic for about 10 years. Was told way back when to let it go until it got bad. Hasn't seemed to change much over the years so I simply ignore it.

 

Do you remember what they charged? I saw you going back and forth with someone in another thread about those short tubes. Did you lose torque like suggested?

 

Does it just tick until warm or constantly?

 

I don't recall the labor charge.

The headers did boost HP & Torque noticeably, the fact that I added an LSD and a
rear sway bar at the same time made these gains even more noticeable to me.
