Sounds like a bad relay.

 

Kinda what I'm thinking.

 

Went out and checked the 02’ after us talking about the DTR RELAY (thats how its labeled in my fuse box). Wasn’t able to pull it out. Looks like a special puller tool needed? To depress those white tabs (2 on each side)?

My year 02’ is made to run DTR with no ability to control. No problems, but just curious.

Went ahead and pushed down all those big box fuses as some were wiggly.


Anyhow, that lead me to checking all my other fuses (see What Have You Done section).

 

My drls run all the time too. It's normal.

 

I had to look into this for myself. I've got an '05 and here's what I get.

Looks about right.

 

I don’t see a difference in the last two pics.

 

There's a leaf on the sidewalk in the last one.

 

Definitely a time lapse happening.

Look at the switch position, yet the lights don't change. Same thing my truck does.

 

I don’t believe the “off” position should have any lights on.

 

Same. That's why I'm going to check my relays. When I get time...

I like the DTR’s for safety. They are a normal function on my 02’. They are the high beams burning at half power and turn on and off with the ignition key.

Was researching this a bit last night for you newer gen 1st gen’rs. Shoulda took a screen grab of the instructions, but this commenter guy said you can take out the relay fuse(s) and snip some connection(s) inside relay and that will alter your light controls.

Do your research and see where it takes you.

BTW, how are these relay fuses removed? I pulled and wiggled and felt like they were going to break. Seems like a special tool is needed to depress all those 4 clips at one time so the fuse will ‘unlock’.

Also, I find it strange that no info is available anywhere on removal of these. Stealership ploy?

 

It doesn't look like the picture relays reality perfectly but, with the switch in the lights "on" position, the lights are a bit brighter. Now that I go back and forth, quickly, between the pictures, you can appreciate the lights are a bit brighter in the last picture.

 

Those lights are DTR in OFF position (half power). Lights in ON are full strength. He has DTR.

Can anyone tell me wth this is? Trying to drop my spare to swap tires and have never seen this.

 

Just went through this a few months ago when tire store lost my key years ago and I was there getting new tires and they couldn’t find the key. Prior guys forgot toput key back. Good thing I never had a flat!

New key is hard to find. Best to buy the combo set ($50 at stealer). Tirestore paid for mine.

Trick to this is getting the old cup off. I used a plumbers under sink adjustable wrench with some arm yoga to reach around tire and SLOWLY was able to spin it off. You can remove key cup, but then you are vulnerale to theft.

Can you find original key?

 

This is the fun part. Hope you have long arms.

 

Thanks! You da man! Good illustrations too. So I need to turn that whole assembly off. I'll try a pipe wrench and maybe a large pair of pliers. Looks fun.

 

You need the ‘Under Sink Adjustable Wrench’. The kind for tight places. It has spring clamping action on the business end. Can be reversed so it tightens or loosens. Handle has adjustment as well.

Angle of attack is to sit up on ground looking at bumper hole at the key. Reach in with wrench and ‘feel’ the bite on the backside of that cup. Turn to loosen and once you get it halfway down, abandon the wrench and use your hands.

You look for key under the back seat in the tire changing pouch? Glove box?

 

OK, I'll see if I can find one. I've looked all over and I'm guessing it wasn't with the truck when I bought it.

 

If its not in the truck, forget about ‘finding one’ online. You’ll have to buy a kit withthe cup key combo. Tire store couldn’t figure any of this problem out that they created. Took them 3 tries and couldn’t connect the dots. I had to take over otherwise it wouldn’t get done.

Yep. Except mine has an adjustment on the length with three settings and a T handle that slides.

 

Well, I got the tire down. For anyone with this issue I was able to do it with a pair of "plumbing" pliers. I could actually sit under the tire and reach around it.

How do I get the cup/device off? Spare tire theft isn't exactly rampant here.

 

Twist and pull. Might be corroded locked so give it a few taps and pull it straight out/off.
