It’s way better done by humans anyway! Should be done by humans in the first place. IMO.

I read that Toyota is just sitting on the problem as they cant keep the robots calibrated that apply the gasket. In 2018 that is a complete BS answer and unacceptable. Especially from Toyota. That is where the laziness comes from and more so probably being CHEAP. I guess Toyota would rather pay out all the warranty claims and have pissed off owners with new trucks leaking oil than replace the robots.

Went out this morning to check.
2016 with 32,000 miles. Bought Certified in Nov 2017 w/ 4,500 miles on it. Added the 100,000 extended bumper-to-bumper for ~$1500 (it’s still inside 3yr/36,000 though).

Driver side is clean as a whistle.

    Passenger side:

    (2nd photo is rotated 90degrees)

This is cam tower seal that’s leaking right??

Not at all what I wanted to find, but I’m in warranty and there are worse things to happen in life. We’ll see how the dealer handles it.

Yes sir that is it. And from what I read here that is in the common spot for it to leak as the robots applying the gasket do not apply enough sealant in that area.

Yeah I hear ya. I bought my Tundra because most of my friends have Tundras and Sequoias and all love them. I asked them all if they had any trouble out of them. They all said no, best vehicles they have ever owned aside of MPG. They are all 5.7 powered. So having owned a couple trouble free Toyotas myself in the past I bought my wife a 2018 Sequoia early this year. We love it. Then my GM truck died 2 months later and I replaced it with my 2018 Tundra 5.7 in June of this year. Then I see this forum. LOL. Now I have 2 Toyotas with the 5.7 in my garage with less then 7,000 miles on them. I have the extended warranty on the Sequoia but not the Tundra.

The issue doesn't bother me really, its just a small leaking gasket for most people. I am used to that, me and my family mostly own GM vehicles and I have been working on them since I could hold a wrench I am used to oil leaks. What I am worried about is one of mine springing a leak and lucking into a competent tech at Toyota doing the repair. That is the hard part. A good mechanic that takes pride in his work can easily handle this properly. But you never know who will be assigned to do the work. You could wind up with a guy pissed off with his job, lazy, hung over, ect and leave bolts off or loose, and you wind up throwing a timing chain 20K miles later and Toyota says sorry charlie you are out of warranty.

If possible, ask to talk to the mechanic that will be assigned to your truck. Ask him some questions, how long has he been working on Toyotas, how many of this repair he has done ect. Luckily I live close to the largest Tundra dealer in the country, so if mine spring a leak and it starts dripping on the floor that is where i will go.

That’s why I went with Toyota, because of the reliability. I had a 2003 Camry before the tundra, and was at 270,000 miles before I hit a deer. Totaled it, but if that didn’t happen I’d probably still be driving it today and over 300,000. Hardly had an issue with that car. Decided to get my dream truck - had no idea about the cam tower seal issue. Though, to be honest, I probably would have risked it and bought one anyway.

Exactly - you don’t know what kind of mechanic you’re gonna get. The pics on this thread of debris - and even wire - in oil filters post-fix are a little concerning.

I’m gonna talk to my brother-in-law first. He has his own business back home in PA (4 hrs away) & was a mechanic for Toyota for a while. Gonna see what he says.

no Tundras been on the side of the road because of a cam leak issue. it's just annoying and should have been fixed at the factory but it wont leave you stranded. I'll still take a Tundra over the other trucks.

Take a photo showing more towards the rear of the engine. Mine looks bone dry as well until I look towards the rear where it is leaking.

I dropped my truck off late Tuesday, the tech was off on Wednesday and would start on it Thursday. I told them they could keep the truck until Saturday. I didn't want them to rush and make mistakes. They called midday on Friday that it was ready. I picked it up this morning and everything looks good. No funny noised, no leaks after a 15 mile drive home. Obviously I'll be keeping a close eye on everything for the next few months. They only did the passenger side, said the drivers side looked fine. I'm ok with that since I have many more months/miles worth of warranty remaining. They replaced all kinds of gaskets, seals, o-rings so it looks like they did it the right way. Will update if any new issues arise.

My 2016 had both sides done at 3k miles, and they were leaking again when I got rid of it. Just dropped my 2018 off to have both sides done at 4k miles.:eek2:

That is absolutely unacceptable! Toyota needs to step up and develop proper gaskets for these, i've been a Toyota guy ever since i picked up my first wrench, and i try to tell everyone to buy Toyota but stuff like this needs to be addressed. Esp with such low mileage.

Had the appointment today. Service manager seemed to confirm a leak. They cleaned up the area - degreased it - and want me to come back in a month so they can check it again. Obviously they want to confirm it’s leaking.
I’m teetering on the 36k warranty (have 32k on it now). He said no worries, this would be covered under the power train warranty, which is ~65k, so bringing it in in a month, and maybe over 36k (which I know I won’t be anyway), won’t be a problem.
He didn’t push back on anything at all and indicated it’d be covered if it shows leaking when I bring it back. I don’t blame them for wanting to check again in a month after cleaning it up - it’s a pretty major repair, definitely want to be sure. I wonder if they have to contact Toyota USA for approval for this first. If so, maybe it was them saying to check again in a month.

Either way - will be finding out mid-Jan what’s gonna happen.

These guys get paid directly from the manufacturer so they want to take these warranty repairs. If you want to push it, come back in a month and before you come in, pour some oil in the vicinity or something lol

Lol. I’ll pour extra on the driver side since that one’s not leaking (yet?).

The mechanics don't get paid as well for warranty work, so sometimes it can be more difficult to sort out these repairs. Toyota only pays a fixed amount for this specific warranty repair, not the real-time, however-long-it-takes-time. If it takes more time due to unforeseen issues, same pay. If they can bang it out as fast as they can in less time, "bonus" for the mechanic.

Dropped off for first oil change and have passenger side looked at by dealer i purchased from. They confirm it is weeping but it isn't bad compared to other leaks they see on the cam towers. They suggest monitoring it and if it starts to leak more to have it taken care of under warranty. They said it is fairly common to weep and never develop into a full fledged dripping leak. I intend to monitor at this point and if it drips off it goes to be repaired.

Welcome to the club. Give it a bit, at low miles the other side should be leaking soon as well. Better to do both at once.

2018 CM with 11k leaking in the exact same spot on driver side. I soaked up a droplet off the round eyelet. Hoping it’s the valve cover.

This issue has been around for a while with the 5.7s, why is it still happening on 2018s? Gotta go check my 2016 and the LC200.

So.... I bought mine CPO from a dealership about 5 months ago and it has the cam tower leak on the passenger side (driver's side looks good). The leak doesn't look new either. How on God's green earth did they miss this during the certification process????

I have the 12 month full warranty plus the 7 year / 100,000 mile powertrain warranty so I think I should be covered for the repair work but what the hell? It doesn't leave me with much confidence in Toyota's CPO process. I guess it could be the dealership...

If it wasn't because of the internet, most would not notice it.
Toyota must have also been ignoring this based on the history of the problem. They may now get pressured to do something about it if more people find out and cost them a lot of money for repairs ...
