It has gradually gotten a looser.... maybe an inch of play ?

Transmission still goes into gears properly so no functional issue. I would just like it tighter.

    Anyone else ?

Curious if it’s on the hinge point on the column. Check the selector under the truck to see if that’s where the play is.

Check out the gearshift bushing, it's an easy fix. I fixed mine with a bushing from - bushingfix.com. Found it on youtube.
It's a pricey little bushing but easy to repair.

I checked my play and its about the same around 1”. Not sure if thats normal or from age as the manual does not spec this measurement. Hard to tell after 16 years.

Nothing specific to Tundra. Plenty other Toy models though. I’ll wait to see someone else do theirs. Not a problem for me right now.

I ordered a bushing for the 02’. I’ll report back when installed. Steep price for a bushing at $25, but maybe avoid steering column stripping?

Old thread but how did it turn out? Mine's sloppy too, wondering if you found the fix.

I never did install the $25 bushing. I determined the original one was still fine so I did not mess with it. The play seems natural looseness (iirc) and not from bushing. Saving it in the parts box when/if ever needed in the future.

I did push some lube all up in there on the bushing and gear balls whilst the panel was off.

I disagree, at least in my case. There is so much slop in mine that my mechanic friend said it felt like garbage. Perhaps I could obtain said bushing from you?

I’ll be holding onto mine as it is paid for and may be needed in the future. Did your mechanic specifically state that the bushing is the problem?

I'm not sure how he would have known merely by putting the shifter into gear. Fair enough though.

Its been a while since I messed with it so things are fuzzy, but usually I’d tackle if it looked like it was needed. I seem to remember it looked like lots of extra work on top of the panel removal time just to see if there was a problem. Got chapped for buying a little $25 bushing and started yelling at the sky.:annoyed:

I inspected and lubed and figured that the play was in the bracket or shifter arm itself and could not be adjusted/tightened/fixed.

@theblurry1 I found an old picture of my original bushing that didn’t need replacing. I don’t see any possible way that 1” of play can come from this bushing if it was bad.

I'll do some more research and figure out what has worn out, maybe I can find a whole shifter assembly from a junkyard with lower miles and see if that helps.

You should open up the cover and look at how yours works first. I don’t think anything will fix the play. Again, going on fuzzy memory and the above pic bringing *some* clarity, I think the play is shared across the entire assy and not a ‘silver bullet fix’.
