38 gallon fuel tank is a joke 2019 TRD PRO

My wife does same in her Highlander...she drives way past the low fuel warning...she will single handedly reduce the life expectancy of the fuel pump...not sure the engineers saw her coming...

 

Not ballsy, dumb. LOL. I didn't start out to see how far I could go, just happened.

The problem is that with such a big tank refueling is not always on your mind. If you know you have to fill up every other day then you keep your eye on the needle. My wife drives a Prius - same thing for her; she doesn't even think about filling up until she makes it home on fumes and not enough left to go to the gas station again, then I have to use the lawnmower supply to get her back on the road.

Which, by the way, My Tundra get 500 miles per tank, and the Prius gets 500 miles per tank, so I don't have any reason to complain about gas mileage. (Prius has a 8 gallon tank )

 

I agree with the above in principle, but I disagree with it in practice.

It just seems weird that the Tundra is designed to keep so much of its fuel capacity in reserve when other Toyota's (like the 4runner) have more usable capacity. The 4runner had a 23 gallon tank, and I could routinely squeeze 19-20 gallons of fuel into it.

Only being able to squeeze 29-30 gallons of fuel into a 38 gallon tank just seems a bit odd.

It's not that you cannot squeeze 38 gallons into it, it actually holds 38 gallons. You just can't use all of it. The 4Runner's 23 gallon tank is not nowhere close to 6' long, which is making the difference. If the 38 gallon tank was designed for that size from the beginning, it might have been done differently, but keep in mind that the Tundra was designed with the base 26 gallon tank and then the 38 gallon came as an upgrade afterwards - they had to use whatever available space there was under the bed to provide a bigger tank, which I assume was based on owner feedback that they wanted to see that. They delivered what the goal was, but it comes with the limitations that comes with the conditions that they had to work with.
I have no reason to defend any of it; I just know that in my work I sometimes bend over backwards to provide clients with more than they expected, and then they complain about benefits that they did not even ask for.
I appreciate the 38 gallon tank and I am more than happy with the 30 gallons that are usable, because I understand why 38 cannot be usable. Some people just stare themselves blind on the 38 and expect that they should get all of that - it just doesn't work like that. It's like telling a client you will try to do a task that would take 30 days to complete, in 20 days. Then when you complete it in 24 days they are upset because they think you are 4 days late, instead of appreciative that they actually got it 6 days early.

 

And you are effectively getting 10 more usable gallons of fuel than the 26 gallon tank. I know it’s not 12 more gallons but it’s relative. In my 26 gallon tank I have 20 gallons before my light comes on. 38 gallon tank has 30 gallons before the light comes on. Sounds reasonable to me.

 

I've read here and other places the need for cooling of the fuel pump is an internet myth.

It is my understanding the fuel flowing through the pump, not surrounding it is what cools the pump.

I can't say for certain but just another bit of information.

 

I understand there are engineering limitations with any modification to an existing design.

But the burden is on companies, like Toyota, to try and meet consumer expectations; there is no obligation on the client's part to restrain their expectations.

The 5.7l V8 is a hog on fuel. The Tundra should have come with a 38 gallon tank as standard from the factory. The consumer should be able to get as much driving range as possible out of that 38 gallon fuel tank before the empty light comes on; getting only 28-29 gallons worth of driving range is unacceptable in my view. Other companies have overcome that issue; the burden is on Toyota to figure that out as well. If they don't, they risk losing potential consumers. Plain and simple.

Your original post was implying that consumers have unrealistic expectations with regards to the Tundra's usable fuel capacity. Maybe 10-15 years ago, that may have been the case. Considering what the competition offers nowadays, those expectations are not at all unrealistic.

 

Here’s the thing. You can use the fuel. Just keep driving. The light turning on does not mean you can’t keep going. But at that point you probably should just get gas. You have used about 80% of your fuel.

 

This is Toyotas way of trying to save you $30-$50 when it time to fuel up.

I think we can all agree on that. Now please for the love that all holy let this puppy rest.

 

Truth. I don't have the 38 gallon tank, but I have run my 26 gallon tank down so low that I put about 24 gallons in it once.

If I stop and put fuel in it when the light comes on, I put in about 19.5 gallons to get it full.

I don't freaking understand the logic behind the bickering of people that complain that they can't use all of their gas when it is in their damn tank. Man, I am in the same boat of People's Socialist Republic of Chicago. Yeah, IL doesn't exist when it controls the whole state like the Chicago Machine they're named after.

 

I always fill up at 1/4 tank left - typically close to 300 miles per tank - well that was before I moved to a state where gas is only 2.40 a gallon. Now it is more like 250 miles lol stupid lead foot

 

Heck, in winter time I fill at 1/2 tank most of the time, just in case there is a blizzard and you get stranded. Summer is around 1/4 for me also.
